Dear all,
not too many of you have reacted (+ confirmed their attendance)
for the special TC6 meeting on developing countries which is going to be held
August, 25, from 9 a.m. in Santiago de Chile.
For your convenience I attach once again the preliminary agenda.
I took the liberty to invite also Jan Wibe from NTNU Trondheim who is chairman
of TC3 and who is involved in the so-called IFIP academy or IFIP school
project
(see below). To my opinion, the IFIP school might be similar albeit on a
larger scale
to the TC6 intentions of a cooperation with UNU in developing countries.
Jan will come if he is allowed to enter the building without having
registered for WCC2006. [NB: I will have the same kind of problem
and I even should chair a session in the aftrnoon of August 24.
Let's see what happens].
As participants I count on Ana Pont Sanjuan, Dominique Gaiti, Augusto Casaca,
Guy Pujolle, Ramon Puigjaner, Jose Neuman de Sousa, Jose Piquer
and also some others who will be at WCC anyway according to the conference
programme: For example Ahmed Al-Naamany and Harry Perros.
And hopefully some others who might have been forgotten in the list.
Dipak Khakhar will be in Santiago but the EB (executive board) meeting
is in parallel
(and this might be even more important for him). Nevertheless I would be very
glad if he could attend our meeting part time when the EB meeting
gets all too boring (which means that he could come to us for several
hours;-) ).
Best regards
Otto

Excerpt from the Council 2006 minutes:
IFIP Academy
Mr Wibe and Mr Strous had done some further work on the concept of an
IFIP Academy. Their conclusion was that this concept was not easy to
define and even more difficult to implement. Besides that, it was felt
that the concept of the IFIP School was still in its infancy and their
suggestion was to focus first on the IFIP School and put effort into
making this a success. Once this was established, further work could be
done on the IFIP Academy. All TC Chairs were requested to send
information about their existing or planned schools and about the way
they deal with schools in their TCs to the TC 3 Chair. This inventory
would be analysed and further discussed at the next TA. Naturally
comments on the proposal and IFIP Academy were still welcome.

Dear Otto,
In your initial message of this series you announced the celebration of
this meeting for the whole day of August 25. However, you forget (or at
least, I do not remember to have read) the venue in which the meeting will
take place.
When are you planning to arrive? Where are you planning to be hosted?
Best regards
Ramon

Dear Otto,
Just an addition to your list. The CLEI representative will also attend the
meeting. This representative should be Benjamin Baran, President of CLEI
and active network researcher. However, maybe, as on Friday there the
closing of CLEI, it is possible that he delegates the representation in
some proxy.

The Microsoft Research - University of Trento Centre for
Computational and Systems Biology invites you to Trento (Italy) on
16-17 October 2006 for the second edition of the "Converging
Sciences" Conference http://www.msr-unitn.unitn.it/events/consci06.php.
The first edition was held in Trento on December 16-17, 2004 (see
www.unitn.it/consci.html). It had a good international press coverage
and good scientific outcomes.
The main aims of the second edition of the Conference are:
To address the idea of computer science as enabling technology for
biotech and pharma industries
To further stress that the distinction between basic and applied
research should be replaced by the notion of targeted and
communicative research
To propose in the final session some ideas to solve the issues raised
in the three main sectors covered by the Conference:
Industry
Scientific community
Policy making people
Following the Converging Sciences Conference, we will hold in Trento
the fourth edition of the CMSB International Conference. You can
register to both events at a reduced rate. For more details on

ABOUT ITA
Brazil's most selective Engineering school, ITA accepts
yearly only about 150 students out of more than 8000 applicants.
ITA is one of the few schools in Brazil that recruits students
nationally and offers a residential campus where most students
and faculty live. All students receive full scholarship from the
Brazilian government. ITA's rigorous undergraduate programs are
5 years long and lead directly to professional degrees in
Aeronautical, Electronics, Computer, Mechanical, or Civil
Engineering. Average scores of ITA Electronics and Computer
Engineering students in national comprehensive examinations
for graduating engineers have consistently been the highest
in Brazil.
ITA was founded in 1950 as the initial institute in Brazil's
Aerospace Technical Center (CTA), Latin America's largest
research center. CTA's planner and ITA's first provost was
Richard H. Smith, who previously headed the Aeronautics department
at MIT. ITA was the first institution to offer Aeronautical and
Electronics Engineering degrees and post-graduate degrees in
Brazil. Embraer, now the world's leading regional-jet manufacturer,
was spun off from ITA in 1969. ITA/CTA research in the 1970s is
also behind Brazil's highly successful renewable-energy program.
A majority of cars now sold in Brazil can use ethanol as fuel.
ITA pioneered Computer Science in Brazil with the construction
of the first computer in 1961 and Tercio Pacitti's best-selling
books on numerical methods in the 1960s and 1970s (he would
become ITA's provost in 1982). Computer Engineering was
organized as an independent ITA department in 1989.

The 3rd International IEEE/Create-Net Conference on Testbeds and
Research Infrastructures for the Development of Networks and Communities
will take place in Orlando, Florida, USA, during February 5-8, 2007 and
it will include a session for live system demonstrations.
This is an opportunity to feature mature systems or innovative
prototypes that show how applied research results are implemented. We
also encourage submission of a demo that has already been described in
the published literature in sufficient details. In addition, the demo
should be attractive, address an application of broad interest in such a
way that it can be appreciated by a diverse audience, and clearly show
the contributions to the conference themes.
