3rd International WORKSHOP on
'Next Generation Networking Middleware'
(NGNM06)
in the scope of
Networking 2006
5th IFIP - TC6 Networking Conference
(http://www.ifip-networking.org <http://www.ifip-networking.org/> )
Date: May, 19 2006
Venue: University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal
NGNM04 held on May 2004, in conjunction with Networking 2004 conference in
Athens, Greece, constituted a forum for the discussion of innovations and
recent advances in the design and construction of Internet middleware. Both
the requirements and expectations from various perspectives (i.e.,
networking, middleware and application level) were presented and analyzed.
NGNM05 held on May 2005, in conjunction with Networking 2005 conference in
Waterloo, Canada, focused on the identification of composite business
services running on an Internet middleware platform that allows
enterprises/networking actors to publish the services they provide, use
services available globally in a secure manner and automatically compile the
various services descriptions into executable processes. The special issue
on "Emerging Middleware for Next Generation Networks" of Computer
Communications journal complemented the success of NGNM04 and NGNM05.
NGNM06 targets to address the challenges of middleware platforms required
for new generation mobile/wireless heterogeneous radio networks and
services. Mobile/Wireless middleware is anticipated to increase the
performance of applications running across potentially mixed wireless
networks, to support multiple mobile/wireless devices, to provide continuous
wireless access to content and services, to ensure end-to-end QoS and secure
content and services delivery and to offer cross-system and cross-layer
optimization taking into account issues related to usage behavior, mobility
patterns, traffic profiling, network selection and relevant
horizontal/vertical handovers.
* Middleware support for micro/macro/multi-domain mobility
* Emerging Information Models and Frameworks (i.e., MPEG-21)
* Specification and enforcement of QoS
* Interworking between Heterogeneous Middleware Technologies
* Self-managing networks (self-healing, self-optimizing,
self-protecting and self-configuring)
* Programmable, Active and Adaptive Networks
* Wireless Grids Middleware
* Grid-enabled Networking Middleware
* Performance evaluation and modeling in Wireless/Mobile Middleware
* Middleware support for cross-system and cross-layer optimization
* Middleware security, including authentication and authorization
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
2006 International Workshop
"Towards the QoS Internet", To-QoS'2006
University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal,
May 19, 2006
To be held in conjunction with "2006 IFIP Networking Conference"
http://networking2006.dei.uc.pt/workshops.htm
===========================
Workshop Purpose
================
Providing Quality of Service (QoS) into the Internet requires implementation
at the network level a variety of mechanisms and algorithms dealing with the
call and packet handling, network resource managing etc. In addition, they
should operate at different time scales, from the time scale of milliseconds
for handling packets in the routers up till the longer time scale, say
hours, for performing some actions to manage network resources in an optimum
way. Furthermore, a signalling system is extremely required to inform the
network about the user-application needs. As a consequence, enhanced
QoS-oriented architectures mainly based on DiffServ concept are currently
investigated and tested in research networks. Anyway, to provide QoS we need
to make an essential update of current Internet infrastructure. The workshop
is aimed at presenting and discussing current activities in this area,
including the results coming from running research projects.
Detailed Scope
==============
* Architectures for assuring QoS in the Internet
* QoS aware applications
* Enhanced Transport Protocols
* QoS routing
* QoS mechanisms in access and core networks
* Inter-domain aspects
* Classes of service
* Admission Control
* PHB mechanisms
* Monitoring and measurement systems
* Scalability
* End-to-end QoS
* Signaling systems

Performance Control in Wireless Sensor Networks,
a Workshop at the 2006 IFIP Networking Conference.
--------------------------------------------------
Networking 2006 will take place at the University of
Coimbra, Portugal, between May 15 and May 19.
Detailed information
====================
http://networking2006.dei.uc.pt/workshops.htm
Goal and Overview
==================
The Performance Control in Wireless Sensor Networks Workshop will be a
full-day, peer-reviewed workshop on Friday, May 19, 2006. The aim of the
workshop is to bring together professionals from academia and industry to
discuss performance issues in wireless sensor networks.
Wireless sensor networks are currently the subject of intense research and
many prototype installations are currently investigated. These existing
sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered
time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the
received data. However, many future application areas of wireless sensor
networks such as plant automation and control, traffic management or medical
applications require this feature. In such environments, data has to be
transported reliable and in time through the sensor network. In other words,
performance guarantees regarding a variety of network parameters are
required. Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols it
is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor
network with a controlled performance. Thus, the commercial success of
wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this
particular problem is understood and solved.
Topics of Interest Include:
===========================
This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners,
working on performance issues within wireless sensor networks. Areas of
interest include, but are not limited to:
* Models: Traffic models, channel models, mathematical models to
balance performance parameters in the network.
* MAC protocols: MAC protocols with deterministic behaviour, MAC
protocols to balance forwarding performance and energy consumption.
* Routing and topology control: Methods to stabilize network
topology, topology robustness.
* Data transport: Control of data transport delay and reliability,
methods to improve data forwarding performance in sensor networks.
* Operating systems: Performance optimization and control of
sensor network operating systems.
* Middleware and frameworks: Middleware/frameworks providing
performance guarantees for sensor network applications.
* Security: The impact of security features on network performance.
