Dear TC6 members,
The deadline for hotel registration in Libon ended yesterday. I managed to
get an extension of that deadline until September 13th. Please remember that
the hotel cannot guarantee rooms after that date. I would thank also that
those of you who come to the Lisbon meeting, but are not staying in the
Melia Hotel, please let me know.
Best regards
Augusto

Dear all,
the IFIP executive director, Plamen Nedkov, has initiated a campaign
" Bye, bye 2002, welcome 2003" which includes
a selection of the "IFIP Event of the Year".
Please find enclosed his message below.
Now my cautious recommendation would be that you might be inclined to nominate
Nr. 25 "Congratulations to TC6
Nr. 19 "TC6 - A Sailboat in the Wind"
Nr. 16 "TC6 - A Sailboat in the Wind (continued)"
all of which have to do with our 30 years anniversary in Lisbon.
I recommend that we vote for that event as the "IFIP event of the year".
Thus if you follow my advice then please send a corresponding note
to Plamen Nedkov <nedkov(a)ifip.or.at> until December 1 at the very latest.
Best regards
Otto
Plamen's message follows
---------
Dear IFIPers,
Hold on to your hats as we head into the roller coaster period towards the
Holiday Season during which we intend to make you Twist and Shout or do
whatever you like most when you're happy :- ))
Our program " Bye, bye 2002, welcome 2003" will include --
1. The IFIP Event of the Year - YOUR CHOICE
2. A GREAT Holiday Season web-site
3. A New Year's lottery with a fantastic reward!!!
4. A present for everyone
5. A selection of "end of year" jokes, and ...
6. More!
All this will start coming soon and will culminate on 20 December!
*****With this note we invite your nominations for the IFIP 2002 Event
which has impressed you most. Our Newsroom at
http://www.ifip.or.at/mail/maillist.html contains over 100 messages sent
this year to the IFIP community about projects, activities, campaigns,
conferences, etc. and you could choose from there or suggest other IFIP
activities which you feel are worthy to be nominated.
PLEASE send your nominations by 1 December latest to <nedkov(a)ifip.or.at>.
We will then compile a list of up to 10 IFIP 2002 events and on that basis
solicit your vote so as to select the IFIP EVENT OF THE YEAR 2002.
Stay tuned and have a nice weekend,
The Delivery Co.

David bought his wife a guitar for X-mas. A few weeks later, his friend
Bill asked how she was doing with it.
"Oh," said David, "I persuaded her to switch to a clarinet."
"How come?" Bill asked.
"Because," he answered, "with a clarinet, she can't sing..."

Subject: [IFIP] TC Visions - TC12/Bernd Neumann
Dear All,
After the insightful interviews of the Chairs of IFIP TC 1, TC 5, TC 7 and
TC 13 we continue Project "Visions from the IT Engine Room" with Bernd
Neumann, Chairman of IFIP TC 12 on Artificial Intelligence.
Five years ago in Bratislava we had an interesting discussion on Artificial
Intelligence with Bernd's predecessor, Luigia Carlucci-Aiello, a formidable
lady and a good friend of the Delivery Co. We remember the discussion ended
on a lighter note that Artificial Intelligence was like a blonde wearing a
dark wig. Luigia laughed a lot, herself being dark haired.
Now it's Bernd's time to tell a much larger audience about the IFIP
developments in Artificial Intelligence during the last 5 years. He is a
Professor in the Department of Computer Science of Hamburg University and
Head of the Research Group on Cognitive Systems. In 1988, he founded the
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Hamburg which offers application
oriented R&D in cooperation with industry. His main research area is
Artificial Intelligence, with special interests in Computer Vision,
Foundations of Knowledge-Based Systems, and applications in Diagnosis and
Configuration.
Bernd's motto - taken from the German version of Gyro Gearloose - is "Dem
Ingeniör ist nichts zu schwör" [Nothing is too difficult for the engineer].
Bernd plays violin in regular string quartet sessions. He is President of a
boys choir and organizes concert trips abroad. He likes travelling and
believes that travelling is one of the vital assets for his IFIP
involvement. If weather and other conditions permit, he flies with his
little airplane, a Piper Cherokee, but complains that he has very little
time left for his hobbies.
For an exclusive interview with Prof. Neumann click here ->
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/tcvisions.htm and then follow the link
under his photo.
Enjoy,
The Delivery Co.

Subject: [IFIP] Bratislava hosts IT STAR
IFIP Information Release
Bratislava, 15 November 2002 - The Slovak Institute of Informatics and
Statistics provided the venue for the regular meeting of IT STAR, a
regional initiative in Central East Europe [ http://www.ifip.or.at/it-star
] organized under the auspices of IFIP. The meeting was attended by the
representatives of all IT STAR members* and reviewed its current
organization and activities including national IT priorities related to IT
STAR, members' interest in IFIP's Task Force on IT and Sport, the ECDL
administration system in the Czech Republic and members' interests in
supporting a project for open source ECDL testing based on OpenOffice.org
and Linux/Windows. The key item of the Bratislava meeting was a Proposal
for an IT-STAR Professional Pool of Experts with the objectives to develop
a regional system based on national databases. Experts who meet jointly
established criteria and requirements would be certified and included in
the system which is intended to facilitate the establishment of expert
teams. Such teams would be available to national governments and to the UN
system, the EU and not-for-profit organizations in executing international
and national projects and other short term activities. The proposal was
accepted and the specific elements, including database specifications,
certification criteria, coordination, legal and financial issues, would be
prepared and considered in 2003.
The next regular IT STAR meeting is scheduled for the first week of June
2003 in Opatija, Croatia. IFIP's members from Bulgaria and Greece have
expressed their interest to join. The computer societies of Yugoslavia and
Macedonia, currently not members of IFIP, would also be invited. It is
expected that these 4 societies would join IT STAR and its membership would
grow to 11 societies.

I had a meeting last Friday (8th November) which involved Roger Johnson, who
has been heavily involved in the IFIP publications saga.
He said that Yana Lambert believed that the sale to the venture capitalists
was the best option for KAP.
It remains to be seen whether the sale will deal with our other concerns.

Wolters Kluwer has decided to sell Kluwer Academic Publishers (KAP) to
Candover and Cinven, two private equity funds based in London. KAP will
continue its activities as they are right now, meeting the needs of its
customers, authors and other stakeholders. Candover and Cinven are highly
enthusiastic about KAP's prospects as a business in its current form and
under the leadership of the existing management team. They wish to provide
KAP with the financial resources it needs to grow and thereby participate
in its success, together with its management and employees. A small part of
KAP's management is investing alongside Candover and Cinven, underlining
the belief in a healthy development of the company.
KAP is the principal IFIP publisher since 1998 when Wolters Kluwer
purchased Chapman & Hall.
