CALL FOR PAPERS
HICSS-36 Minitrack on
MOBILE DISTRIBUTED INFORMATION SYSTEMS
http://www.ipsi.fraunhofer.de/mobile/hicss
Part of the Software Technology Track
Thirty-sixth Annual
HAWAI'I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES
January 6 - 9, 2003,
Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island of Hawaii
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Abstracts due: April 10, 2002 (new!)
Full Papers due: June 1, 2002
=====================================================================
In today's mobile society, access to relevant information and to
context-specific services "anytime, anywhere" is becoming increasingly
important. Mobile users are often particularly interested in information
about and services in their immediate vicinity, thus Mobile Distributed
Information Systems must address location-dependent distribution of and
access to services and information from mobile devices. The user's
topological and geographical location becomes relevant for the semantics
of communication, and such communication has to remain seamless even in
foreign environments, with little or no need for manual reconfiguration.
Frequently, in addition to his location, the user's current situation
determines his information and service requirements. With mobile devices
becoming more and more powerful, mobile users themselves may offer
information and services to peers in an ad-hoc manner. Consequently, the
long-established distinction between clients and servers is blurred,
which calls for an extension of the architecture paradigm towards peer
and/or alternating roles.
This Minitrack will address current topics in the field of
Mobile Distributed Information Systems, such as:
Location and Situation aware Information Services
Network Support for Mobile Access to Services and Information
Ad hoc Networking
Quality of Service for Mobile Information Access
Directory Services, Service Discovery, Service Brokers
Service Interoperability, Service Distribution, Service Management
Self-/Zero-/Auto-Configuration, Dynamic Configuration
for Mobile Users
Distributed Databases and Data Management for Mobile Access
Modeling a User's Situation
Mobile Devices: GUIs and Usability
Management of Groups of Mobile Users
Location Tracking Technologies
Fundamentals of location-based Information and Service Distribution
Architectures for Mobile Computing and Peer Service Provision
Security Aspects of Mobile Distributed Information Systems
Charging Models for Mobile Information and Service Access
Business Opportunities and M-Commerce Potential of
Mobile Distributed Information Systems
Mobile Service and Information Provision in the Tourism Industry
Case Studies of Mobile Distributed Information Systems

Subject: [IFIP] The Day of President Goldsworthy
Project: THE DAY OF THE PRESIDENT - Interview with Prof. Ashley Goldsworthy
ASHLEY GOLDSWORTHY is the 8th IFIP President [1986-1989]. He is a Scorpio
and this fact speaks a million words. His interview is the 6th published so
far and presents an Insider's reflections on IFIP.
All previously interviewed Presidents [Messrs. Speiser, Sendov, Zemanek,
Bobillier and Rolstadas] appear to have continued the path of very
successful academic, business and political careers. Ashley's interview
strikes with how successful he is now on the business front.
Mr. Goldsworthy's responses address some intimate matters related to IFIP's
operations, including
* The IFIP Engine room
* Does IFIP need more Talking Committees as opposed to Technical Committees?
* What is IFIP's vexing problem?
* Would further IFIP specialization create a technical isolation and what
can be done to overcome this?
Go to http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/presidentday.htm and click under
Ashley's photo for the interview.

Dear TC6 members,
I am preparing the meeting documents and they are a lot! Trying to reduce
the number of pages, may I ask you to extract the TC6 handbook and the EOG
guidelines from the TC6 web site and bring them with you?
All the other documents will be part of the ones distributed to you during
the meeting.
Best regards

Subject: [IFIP] Spring Campaign
Dear All,
While Hollywood was admiring Beautiful Hinds during last night's Oscar
winning ceremony we were busy planning our Spring Campaign. This campaign
is intended to rally the IFIP Allies of Good so that IFIP can be a better
place for everyone. The campaign will continue until the end of May and
this first week is dedicated to your basic instinct to win. There are
three initiatives:
1. I3E Lottery: I3E stands for the IFIP series of Conferences on
E-Commerce, E-Business and E-Government
The second I3E Conference will take place in Lisbon, Portugal from 7 to 9
October, 2002 http://www.siweb.info/ifip/ and promises to be a key IFIP
event dealing among other issues with digital cities, e-learning, smart
cards, consumer rights and protection, new supply chains and a medley of
other hot topics. The deadline for paper submissions is set for 5 April
2002.
We just had a telephone call with Mr. Jose Granado, the Conference Chair
and Portuguese GA representative to IFIP, who offered one free conference
registration (worth 300 EUR) as a Lottery Award. To participate, you will
need to answer the following two questions:
a. Who are the 3 IFIP Technical Committees involved in the organization?
b. What are the names of the 3 chairmen of these 3 TCs [if in doubt check
at http://www.ifip.or.at/tcs.htm ]
Please submit your answers by 9.00 GMT on 28 March
to <ifip(a)ifip.or.at> Persons with correct answers will enter a draw and
the winner will be announced soon after.
2. Tomorrow, 26 March, we will publish our interview with the only IFIP
President from the Southern hemisphere. Keep your locators set on
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/presidentday.htm to read the story of a
President who continues to be a shooting star on the business front!
3. Another Delivery Co. Lottery is currently in progress [ ref.
http://www.ifip.or.at/mail/msg00120.html ] If you have not yet entered the
competition you can still do - deadline 29 March.
There is more to come,
