Dear all,
the IFIP treasurer (Dipak Khakhar, email see below) has presented
the TC budgets (see annex) and in particular the DCSC (developing country
support committee) funds for 2005.
*** If a TC6 conference wants to get a support from DCSC
then the organisor should send a request as soon as possible
to Dipak (deadline August 16) with a copy to me. ***
DCSC could be interesting for (at least) the following conferences in 2005:
Working Conference on Networking for Metropolitan Area Networks;
Working Conference on Electronic Government
WG 6.2 + 6.11;
March 28 - 31, 2005; Ho-Chi-Minh City (Vietnam);
Open Conference; 7th Conference on Mobile and Wireless Communications

Dear TC6 members,
The deadline for hotel registration in Libon ended yesterday. I managed to
get an extension of that deadline until September 13th. Please remember that
the hotel cannot guarantee rooms after that date. I would thank also that
those of you who come to the Lisbon meeting, but are not staying in the
Melia Hotel, please let me know.

Looks good!
May I make a few minor comments (which you are free to reject if they are
not to your liking)?
- Make "Surplus (or deficit)" "Estimated Surplus (or deficit)" [see note 1
below].
- Use the Roundup function on the break even number calculation.
- Put the contingency on all of the expenses not just the variable income
[see note 1 below].
- It might be worthwhile having two participant numbers: one for the full
fee paying participants (or equivalent) and one for all participants - use
the first in the income and the second in the costs. This may be
complicating things too much and I'd be interested in feedback as to whether
those numbers differ significantly.

Peter

Subject: [ifip-tc6] (New) Accounting Information
Dear all,
the event request forms provided by IFIP are awful. This feeling is shared
by everyone. Nobody is able to give half way correct information about the
conference budget. This is a lot of unneccessary burden for TC and WG
chairs.
I promised to simplify that scheme and the first result is found in the
attachments.
There is:
- an empty sheet (don't care about the #DIV!0 in the before last line;
it will disappear when you fill the form)
- and a virtual example.
You may and should play around with the forms and tell me whether you
find them easy enough to use.
WG chairpersons should give it to prospective conference organisors.
Some comments are in order:
1. The document has been kept as simple as possible (fool-proof, hopefully).
You have to fill in only the figures in frames (light blue colours).
The other figures (in light yellow) will then automatically be
calculated.
2. A very crude approximation of registration fee is used:
Only for full paying participants, no early bird registration, no
special rate for members of diverse societies, no student fee etc.
It would be impossible to have those concrete figures well before the
event.
Thus if you estimate for example that the total registration fee
by students might be identical to, say, 10 full paying participants
then you should increase the number of expected full paying
participants accordingly. Similar for the variable expenses
per participant.
3. "Contingencies" are meant to be a reserve just to be on the safe side.
They are - according to IFIP - 10 percent of the variable cost
per participant and could, of course, be already taken into
account there. Nevertheless, since these costs are automatically
calculated
we can leave it in the document.
4. "Break even number of participants" should be clear but since I have
been asked several times about this:
This is the minimum number of full paying participants which will
be needed if the conference should not make a deficit (and if
all other parameters are valid).
You will see that it is wonderfully easy to play around and to determine
registration fees, fixed expenses,.. which are meaningful and which
may end up with a reasonable surplus.
It might be that the break even number will turn out to be negative!
In that
case you will have a serious problem with your budget: either the
registration fee is too low or ....
5. I didn't nclude information about loan and grants (since IFIP says that
in such a case "a more detailed budget information is needed). If you
want I can add a few lines for that purpose (and also for different
categories of registration but my first purpose was to keep
the document as simple as possible).
6. Conferences (and the sponsorship fee to IFIP) are calculated in full
days;
thus if the conference lasts 2,5 days then the fee to IFIP will be
calculated
on a 3-day basis.
Now:
Please check the new forms and give me your comments within the next two
weeks
(improvements, modifications, what is missing, what should be deleted,...).
I would then formally approve the new sheets in Bangkok and tell IFIP
secretariat that we will not any more use the old bullshit versions.
Best regards (and have fun with the new sheet)
Otto

Dear all,
for the moment being our attendance statistics for meeting 2004/2 looks as
shown below. Please check and give me more information if necessary.
Those of you who are marked "uncertain": please inform me as soon as
possible. I don't want to carry too many meeting documents.
They are very heavy and my luggage allowance is limites.
Moreover: WG-cvhairs should send me their reports asap. Most of the
reports are still missing.

Hallo Otto
Since we are in the process of revising the event form, maybe we should
also look at the legal side of it where the organizer has to sign that
he/she
has the authority to make legal commitments for the organization.
This has caused a problem with networking 2005 and is causing a problem
with ONDM 2005. I don't know if other conference organizers have the
same problem.. or is it just those I am affiliated with !!
We all agree that it is important that we make the organizer's life as
easy as
possible so that he/she can focus on the conference at hand rather than
worry
about legal implications.

IFIP NETWORKING 2005 -- CALL FOR PAPERS
University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario Canada
May 2 - 6, 2005
http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/Networking2005/topics/call_papers.html
Due date for submissions: November 8, 2004
Networking 2005 is the fourth event in the series of International
Conferences on Networking, organized by the IFIP Technical Committee on
Communication Systems (TC 6). Previous events were held in Paris
(France) in 2000, Pisa (Italy) in 2002, and Athens (Greece) in 2004.
Based on the success of this biannual event, IFIP TC 6 decided to hold
the Networking conference every year starting in 2005. Networking 2005
will take place between May 2 and 6, at the University of Waterloo,
Ontario, Canada.
The conference is organized by the University of Waterloo and sponsored
by the IFIP working groups on Network and Internetwork Architectures (WG
6.2), Performance of Communication Systems (WG 6.3), Wireless
Communications (WG 6.8), and Photonic Networking (WG 6.10).
Networking 2005 will be structured along three tracks:
Networking Technologies, Services and Protocols
Performance of Computer and Communication Networks
Mobile and Wireless Communications Systems

Formal Methods in System Design
Special Issue on
Parallel and Distributed Methods in Verification
(http://www4.in.tum.de/~leucker/fmsd.html)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Formal Methods in System Design is seeking original manuscripts for a
Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Methods in Verification,
scheduled to be published in February 2006.
The growing importance of automated formal verification in industry is
driving a growing interest in those aspects which have a direct impact
on its applicability to real world problems. One of the main technical
challenges is in devising tools that allow to handle large state
spaces. Over the last years numerous approaches have been
developed. Recently, an increasing interest is in parallelizing and
distributing verification techniques.
Articles for this special issue are solicited that cover all aspects
of parallel and distributed methods and techniques for formal
verification. Theoretical results, algorithms and case studies are
equally welcome.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* parallel and distributed model checking
* parallel and distributed equivalence checking
* parallel and distributed satisfiability checking
* slicing and distributing the state space
* distributed theorem proving
* distributed constraint solving
* parallel methods in probabilistic model checking
* file systems for distributed transition systems
* parallel methods in performance evaluation
* tools and case studies
* industrial applications
To simplify the publication process, we have a two step selection
process. Authors willing to submit to this special issues are asked to
send an extended abstract of about 4 pages describing the intended
contribution. We will then select most promising abstracts and will
ask the authors to submit a full version. The full version will then
undergo a careful review process according to journal standards. Note
that acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee acceptance of the
full version.
Submitted articles must not have been previously published or
currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. As an author,
you are responsible for understanding and adhering to our submission
guidelines. Please thoroughly read these before submitting your
manuscript. See www.kluweronline.com/issn/0925-9856/ for details.
Submissions should be sent to leucker+fmsd(a)in.tum.de
Please feel free to contact the guest editors at brim(a)fi.muni.cz or
Martin.Leucker(a)in.tum.de if you have any questions.
Please note the following important dates:

Dear all,
we promised at the occasion of the previous meeting in Athens to
moderate all lists such that Spam messages would be avoided as far as
possible.
Now, this concept seems to work for the TC6 list itself
(please tell me if you are not satisfied with the
current practice). Of course, there may be too many CfPs but
such information might also be of some interest.
Please inform me whether you wnat me to stop CfPs for non-IFIP events.
On the other hand, the list maintained by WG 6.3 delivers more and more
messages which are classified by our filtering system as Spam.
And I have to admit that this classification is correct in almost all cases.
Thus: whoever moderates the WG 6.3 list (Ioannis or a member of his group?)
should stop the distribution of such messages.
Best regards
Otto
