IFIP/IEEE International Conference on
Management of Multimedia Networks and Services
MMNS 2002
Managing IP Multimedia End-To-End
October 6-9, 2002
Santa Barbara, CA USA
http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/conferences/MMNS02
CALL FOR PAPERS
With the popularity of the IP-based Internet, there has been a major
shift towards building a worldwide, all-service and all-media network
based on the next-generation of IP technology. Rich multimedia is
increasingly being incorporated into Internet applications (like
Voice-over-IP, streaming video, etc.). However, more work is needed to
evolve the Internet and the underlying networking technologies into an
infrastructure capable of supporting all- service and all-media
traffic. Significant management functionality is required to ensure
that these applications have a network that is both capable and
available. Management requirements may ensue from the fact that
multimedia traffic may traverse networks using a wide variety of
technology and each network may be owned, operated, and controlled by
a different organization. In order to provide end-to-end, high
quality multimedia services, the network must provide robust
management functionality.
The IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia
Networks and Services will hold its fifth annual meeting Oct. 6
through Oct. 9, 2002 in Santa Barbara, CA. The IFIP/IEEE MMNS is a
single-track conference and provides an intimate setting for
discussion and debate. The program committee is soliciting original
papers describing research in the area of management of multimedia
networks and services. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to, the following:
o End-to-end IP multimedia network and service management
o VoIP service management
o IP Video, streaming, interactive video service management
o Provisioning of multimedia networks and services
o Wireless and mobile multimedia network management
o Optical multimedia network management
o Cable multimedia network management
o Multimedia network traffic engineering and optimization
o Distributed multimedia service management
o Network management models and architectures
o Billing and security for multi-media services
o Content distribution internetworking
o Resource, performance and fault management
o Multi-point, multicast services management
o Network programmability for multimedia services
o Policy-based management for multimedia services
o QoS management
o Multimedia traffic management
o Multimedia content protection
o Deployment of multimedia services
o Active multimedia network management

Subject: [IFIP] Information Release: The Reversi match
IFIP Information Release
In May 1997, Garry Kasparov, the then reigning World Chess Champion was
defeated by IBM's Deep Blue Supercomputer in a fascinating game followed in
real time via the web by millions of chess and computing fans.
Five years later, in May 2002, IFIP and IPSJ, the Information Processing
Society of Japan, will test NEC's ability to produce "intelligent" machines
by staging another board game competition between a computer and a human,
this time a former champion in "Othello" [also known as "Reversi"]. This
game will take place during IFIP's first IWEC conference in the Sharp
Conference Hall, Makuhari, Japan from 14 to17 May, 2002.
Here is what Dr. Tak Kamae, the General Chair of IWEC wrote today to the
IFIP Executive Director:
"The reason we chose the reversi is that it is simple and does not take a
long time. Fortunately there are several previous world champions in Japan
...
NEC has a good software of reversi and will kindly provide it to us without
any fee. Such demo was once done in New Jersey using NEC's software. We would
like to exhibit the real time demo at IWEC on Internet ."
IWEC is the first conference of IFIP's Committee for Cooperation with
Industry (CCI) and IFIP's Task Force on Entertainment Computing. These
initiatives were promoted by the Past IFIP Vice-President and Japanese GA
representative, Dr. T. Miura. CCI is currently chaired by Dr. J. Lee, IEEE
CS GA representative to IFIP.
For more information on IWEC you are invited to the Conference website at

Earlier today, I received the e-mail below from Andrew Martin of Oxford
University. (I've had no previous contact with him.)
Is anyone interested in Grid Computing and/or the Global Grid Forum?
Does anyone think it relevant to any of our Working Groups? (As far as I can
see it doesn't appear in any of the Working Groups aims and scopes.)
If you reply to me (to save filling up everybody's mailboxes), I'll put
together a response to Andrew (which, of course, I'll copy to everyone).
Regards
(and, if the wish is not too late, have a good week-end)

Subject: IFIP TC6 / Grid ?
Hello,
I understand you are the UK representative for IFIP TC6. I'm writing to
ask if you are aware of any interest in that community in the `Grid
computing' paradigm.
You may know that the Grid/e-Science theme is presently receiving a great
deal of UK and European funding, and gaining a great deal of interest
and investment from companies such as IBM. I have just returned from a
meeting of the Global Grid Forum (GGF4), which sees itself as a peer
organisation to the IETF and W3C. I have been struck by how much that
community appears to need input from the Software Engineering and/or
computer science world. IFIP seems a likely framework for such input,
and TC6 (WG 6.1, 6,2, 6.4 etc.) the most promising community.
No doubt I'm not the first to make that connection; can you direct me
to any like-minded people? Looking at IFIP web pages, I can see much
discussion of internet applications, but no mention of the Grid.
Thank you very much.
Best regards
Andrew.

Dear All,
We keep on being asked whether we have put anything away for a rainy day?
Well, next to our rubber boots we have treasured a brand new Internet
address. You can also bookmark http://www.ifip.org to access the IFIP
Internet site. It took some patience as it was reserved but now the
promised .ORG path to IFIPland is ours!

...and to cheer you up for the coming weekend here are two other heavenly
stories:
Adam was feeling rather lonely in paradise. He asked for some company.
"That's no problem," God replied. "I'll make you a perfect mate. She'll not
only be beautiful and clever, she'll also look after your every need and
never argue with you. However, perfection is expensive. She'll cost you an
arm and a leg." Adam thought for a while, then said: "What can you give me
for ... say, a rib?"

Eve's husband arrived in Heaven and asked St. Peter if his wife was there.
"Which Eve do you mean? We have lots of Eves here," he replied. "Can you
tell me something about her?" "Well, the last thing she said before she
died was that she would turn in her grave if I was ever unfaithful to her,"
answered the husband. "Ah, you mean Revolving Eve, then!" said the angel.

Dear Otto,
I know you like magic numbers, so you probably know that today's date is a
palindrome when written in the DD/MM/YYYY format, viz. 20.02.2002, and that
this appears at most once per century (for obvious reasons).
But, even stronger, tonight at 20:02 we can extend this palindrome to get:
20:02 20.02.2002
Have a nice palindrome day, and enjoy the palindrome minute,
Guy

* APROPOS, when Apollo Mission Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the
moon, he not only gave his famous "one small step for man, one giant leap
for mankind" statement but followed it by several remarks, usual com
traffic between him, the other astronauts and Mission Control. Just before
he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic remark "Good luck
Mr. Gorsky." Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning
some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky
in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many
people questioned Armstrong as to what the "Good luck Mr. Gorsky" statement
meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.
On July 5, 1995 in Tampa Bay FL, while answering questions following a
speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question to Armstrong. This
time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had finally died and so Neil
Armstrong felt he could answer the question. When he was a kid, he was
playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball,
which landed in the front of his neighbor's bedroom windows. His neighbors
were Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky.
As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky
shouting at Mr. Gorsky.
"Sex! You want sex?! You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the
moon!"
