WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Information Security in Industry has matured in the last few decades.
Standards such as ISO17799, the Common Criteria, a number of
industrial certification and risk analysis methodologies have raised
the bar on what is considered a good security solution from a business
perspective.
Yet, if we compare Information Security with Networking or Empirical
Software Engineering we find a major difference. Networking research
has introduced concepts such as Quality of Service and Service Level
Agreements. Conferences and Journals are frequently devoted to
performance evaluation, QoS and SLAs. Empirical Software Engineering
has made similar advances. Notions such as software metrics and
measurements are well established. Processes to measure the quality
and reliability of software exist and are appreciated in industry.
Security looks different. Even a fairly sophisticated standard such as
ISO17799 has an intrinsically qualitative nature. Notions such as
Security Metrics, Quality of Protection (QoP) or Protection Level
Agreement (PLA) have surfaced in the literature but still have a
qualitative flavour. The "QoP field" in WS-Security is just a data
field to specify a cryptographic algorithm. Indeed, neither ISO17799
nor ISO15408 (the Common Criteria) addresses QoP sufficiently.
ISO17799 is a management standard, not directly concerned with the
actual quality of protection achieved; ISO15408 is instead a product
assessment standard and yet does not answer the question of how a
user of a product assessed by it can achieve a high QoP within his/her
operational environment. Both standards cover just one aspect of an
effective QoP and even the combination of both would not address the
aspect sufficiently. "Best practice" standards, such as the baseline
protection standard published by many government agencies, also belong
to the category of standards that are useful, but not sufficient, for
achieving a good QoP.
Security is different also in another respect. A very large proportion
of recorded security incidents has a non-IT cause. Hence, while the
networking and software communities may concentrate on technical
features (networks and software), security requires a much wider
notion of "system", including users, work processes, organisational
structures in addition to the IT infrastructure.
The QoP Workshop intends to discuss how security research can progress
towards a notion of Quality of Protection in Security comparable to
the notion of Quality of Service in Networking, Software Reliability, or
Software Measurements and Metrics in Empirical Software Engineering.
The 1st QoP workshop was held in Milano in September 2005 and was
affiliated with the 10th European Symposium on Research in Computer
Security (ESORICS 2005) and the 11th IEEE International Software
Metrics Symposium (METRICS 2005). The revised proceedings of the workshop are
going to appear in the Kluwer (now Springer) Applied Security Series.

Dear all,
here is a message from Roberto Sabella (RM/ERI) <roberto.sabella(a)ericsson.com>
who feels concerned about the future of ONDM conference series.
Many things are not fully clear to me here: for example, I didn't know that
apparently a selection procedure for a new chairman of WG 6.10 has been
initiatied (without a mandate from TC6 !) and that somebody is known
(not to me!)
who would directly become the new chairman of WG 6.10. Formally at least,
this person will have to be approved by the TC6 delegates.
ONDM was held the last time in 2005 by Achille Pattavina:
Working Conference; 9th Optical Network Design and Modelling Conference
(ONDM'2005 or - new proposed name - Optical Networks 2005);
WG 6.10;
9-11 February 2005; Milano; Prof. Dr. Achille Pattavina
Phone:+39-02-2399.3580
Fax: +39-02-2399.3413
Email contact: pattavina(a)elet.polimi.it
URL: http://www.elet.polimi.it/conferences/ondm2005/
This was number 9 already in this series.
Since then it has disappeaed form the scenery.
I believe that something was planned in Copenhagen (Lars Dittmann?)
but I'm not fully sure.
There are no information from WG 6.10 about upcoming events, most other
WG's have
given their input for the adaptation of the TC6 calendar.
The problem with ONDM will have to be treated in Coimbra.
Best regards
Otto
--------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Otto,
the reason why I am writing you is that I am worried and concerned about
the way ONDM is doing in the last years. Unfortunately, my engagement
prevented me to be more active in the activities of WG 10 on optical
networks and in the organization of the conference itself. However, I
care that conference that I contribute to launch in the first years,
organizing the second edition in Roma (1998) and organizing workshops
inside that conference on hot topics inviting highly reputed experts
worldwide.
An easy evalution of the ONDM evolution during the years can be done
using measurable parameters, such as the number of participants to the
conference, the number of published papers, and possibly the number of
books that have been purschased. If the ONDM conference was successful
those numbers had to increase significantly. In addition, there is
another parameter that is not easily measured that is the quality of papers.
I tried to rise this question with the chairman of WG 10, in occasion of
the election of the co-chairman that, according to what he said, would
directly become the new chairman of WG 10.
I think in fact that if the ONDM was re-launched, IFIP could benefit
having a good brand to manage. I also think that the co-support of IEEE
could be useful to further enlarge the community of perspective authors.
In my opinion, if the scientific community of ONDM become large, IFIP
can leverage on it, and organize other relevant initiatives such as
edited books, lecturers and so forth, pushing the brand of IFIP.
In all, I wish to ask you to rise that problem in order to find good
solutions within our community.
Best regards
Roberto
Dear all,
please find the new TC6 calendar in the attachment.
It is probably (and hopefully) still incomplete.
After my corresponding request I received answers from:
WG 6.1 (by John Derrick)
WG 6.6 (Raouf Boutaba)
WG 6.9 (Ana Pont Sanjuan)
WG 6.7 (indirectly from Olli Martickainen)
WG 6.8 (indirectly from Jan Slavik)
WG 6.11 (indirectly by Reima Suomi)
WG 6.2 (indirectly by Guy Pujolle)
The latter ones by CfP's but please believe me that this is tedious work
for me.
Thus the list of missing WG's can be derived.
Could I get, please, the corresponding information also from WG 6.3., 6.4,...?
Note: It would be even better if the events would be sorted by time; this
makles the adaptation of the calendar much easier if the WG has several
events.
We apologize for any duplicate reception of this notification.

Dear all,
in our conference calendar we have:
Open Conference;
11th Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (PWC2006); WG 6.8
20 - 22 September, 2006; Albacete, Spain;
Email contact: Pedro Cuenca, pedro.cuenca(a)uclm.es

Recently we got the following information:
3rd International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems 2006
6 - 8 September 2006, Valencia (Spain)
www.iswcs.org/iswcs2006
Technically co-sponsored by the IEEE and the IEEE Vehicular Technology
Society.
This is far from being perfect. It would not even be meaningful to attend both
conferences back to back (if you don't intend to have 12 days of vacation
in Spain - which would be very nice, however, in September).
But anyway these two events are so (!) near to each other that they will
steal the participants vice versa.
I think that we should have a better control about competing
events in the same area. I agree that the information about those events
may be
difficult to obtain but we have to try to do our very best.
By the way: Apparently the information about the IEEE conference came from
our delegate from Singapore (whom we have not yet seen at a meting),
namely Boon Sain Yeo <boonsain.yeo(a)wavex-tech.com>. I have had a
different email address from him and I would like to ask whether I should
replace his address in our email exploder - in order not to be forced to
treat his
messages manually.
Best regards
Otto
