Dear Guy,
The answer of Jean Claude Laprie concerning who will cover the losses was
quite fuzzy.

And another one ...
(but a view from the commercial world!)
I'd find it very hard to justify, to my bosses, my going to any general
conference like WCC. Things have to be targeted.
Maybe there might be some benefit from running a number of well-targeted
conferences in parallel but much thought would have to be given to how to
extract that benefit.

Peter

Subject: Re: [ifip-tc6] WCC 2006
It has long seemed to me that the WCC is fast becoming a dinosaur congress.
When one past IFIP president wrote that it was the " most important
thing that
IFIP does", I had to protest.
I humbly suggest that TC6 suggest to the Powers That Be that the days of
WCC are past and that IFIP's exposure is much greater than any
conceivable gain.
Sorry to be so negative but our smaller, carefully targeted technical
meetings
are much more attractive in this day and age. Well, just one person's
opinion.
A good topic for the next TC6 meeting.
with best regards all around,
Harry

I attended both WCC and the general assemby in Toulouse and I have the data
ou request.

>From technical as well from organisational viewpoints it was a great
success. In total there were more than 1000 attendees; however as the
registration was global for all events I have no data per track or other
concurrent activities (topical days, workshops, student forum, etc.). The
bad point was that the breakeven was at 1300 attendees and, in consequence
there were aprox 220000 euros of losses (report from Jean-Claude Laprie to
the general assembly).
If you need some other information, do not hesitate to ask.

Dear all,
here is the first invitation for IFIP WCC 2006 in Santiago de Chile.
Contributions of TC's are particularly wanted.
You will see that TC6 is explicitly mentioned "due to its experience
with events in South America". The topic wil have to be discussed
in Bangkok.
Best regards
Otto
-----------------------
Dear TC Chairs
Nice seeing most of you in Toulouse, and welcome to the new TC 9 and TC 13
Chairs.
As you know, I was appointed by President Brunstein as IPC Chair for WCC
2006 (because of some matters outside my control, this appointment will be
revisited.)However, in the meantime, I would like to invite all TCs, and
their Working Groups, to seriously consider some smaller or bigger
involvement in WCC 2006.
I know some of you have already scheduled conferences for 2006, but urge you
to consider some (further) involvement at WCC 2006.
It is a unique opportunity in Southern America, and some TCs like TC 6 and
TC 9 have experiences of being involved there.
Please consult your management ASAP, as time is short, and we want to get
the structure of the program sorted out ASAP.
Hope to hear from you.
Regards
Basie von Solms
Vice-President
Dear Otto,
Currently I am in Peru giving a doctoral course and last week of this month
I will be attending CLEI (Koos will be also here).
I will talk with CLEI people in order to see how to manage LANC and WCC. I
expect to bring some sound proposal to Bangkok.
Best regards
Ramon

***I apologize if you've received this message more than once***
NSF invites you to participate in an informational meeting on the
Network of Sensor Systems (NOSS) focus area of the Networking
Technology and Systems (NeTS) program. During the meeting, recent
NOSS awardees will share their successful projects, and attendees will
interact with these investigators formally and socially. In addition,
attendees will learn about the NOSS focus area's direction and the
open research challenges in this focus area, and thus, strengthen
their proposals. The format of the meeting is organized around
communicating pioneering research, growing the community in this focus
area, and fostering potential collaborations.
Date and time:
Begins: Monday, October 18th, 2:30pm
Ends: Tuesday, October 19th, 2:30pm
Location:
On the campus of the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO
Registration:
The registration fee is $50. Please register early because space
is limited.
Contact us:
noss(a)mines.edu
Visit http://toilers.mines.edu/NOSS for more information, including
details on lodging and agendas.
Dear all,
>
>There are some severe errors in Event Request Form.
>It needs to be simplified and corrected.
>
One of the errors is that it should read:
Break even number of participants = (FE - FI)/(VI - VE)
instead as of: (FI - FE)/(VI - VE)
Thus we have a sign error!
Furthermore many organisors use "Total Income" instead of FI
and "Total expenses instead of FE.
This is probably due to the fact that the corresponding lines
are so near to each other. As a consequence they come up with
(for example) 0.07 number of participants in order to break even.
(See the attached document as an example).
It would be best to create a quite simple Excel sheet
where the organisor would have just to fill:
- The category of the event (working conference etc. in order to
calculate the IFIP fee automatically)
- The duration of the event (in days)
- The expected number of (full paying!) participants
without invited speakers, local people etc.
- The expected contributions from supporters etc.
- The expected income from tutorials
- The expenses (pre event and during event)
- The expected expenses per particpant (proceedings, coffee,..).
All the other numbers (contingencies, break even,...)
would then be calculated automatically by Excel.
The informations concerning "surplus share to IFIP" ect.,
are mysterious and nobody has used these informations in
practice. Thus they might be cancelled.
Best regards
Otto
Dear all,
The IFIP STATUTES & BYLAWS with all agreed changes are on IFIP's web site.
You have access to them by following the path:
http://www.ifip.or.at/ => "about IFIP" => "Statutes&Bylaws".
Best regards
Otto
p.s.: This document will not be distributed by letter
nor will it be part of the next meeting minutes.
Please make your own copy.
We'll try to limit the paper exchange (among other reasons:
voluminous meeting documents are too heavy for
transportation in the airplane)

CALL FOR PAPERS
Wireless sensor networks are expected to be the basic building block of pervasive computing environments. Aggregating sensor nodes into sophisticated sensing, computational and communication infrastructures to form wireless sensor networks will have a significant impact on a wide array of applications ranging from military, to scientific, to industrial, to health-care, to domestic, establishing ubiquitous computing that will pervade society and redefine the way in which we live and work. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of sensor networks and systems are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Sensor-based systems and applications
- Operating systems
- Middleware and software tools
- Networking architectures and protocols
- Location and mobility management
- Topology control and time synchronization
- Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination
- Intelligent sensors
- Power Management and energy-efficient design
- Cross-layer architectures
- Security and dependability issues
- Modeling and performance evaluation
- Measurements
