"Managing New Networked Worlds"
The Ninth IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network
Management (IM 2005) will be held 16-19 May 2005 in Nice, France. IM
2005 will present the latest technical advances in the area of
management, operations and control of networks, networking services,
networked applications, and distributed systems. Held in odd-numbered
years since 1989 and taking turns with its sibling conference NOMS, IM
2005 will build on the successes of its predecessors and serve as the
primary forum for technical exchange among the research, standards,
vendor and user communities in the network management field. The
symposium is sponsored by the International Federation for Information
Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and
Distributed Systems, and by the IEEE Communications Society Technical
Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM).
We are witnessing the dawn of a new era in networking. New networked
worlds emerge in which connectivity becomes increasingly ubiquitous
and the infrastructure blends in seamlessly with business functions,
applications, and the supported environment. These new worlds are no
longer only characterized by the increasing heterogeneity and number
of devices, but also by properties such as convergence, context
awareness, accelerated service lifecycles, virtualization of
resources, massive P2P infrastructures, unprecedented security
challenges, and much more. Further, new types of networks are
emerging such as sensor networks, agent networks, storage-area
networks, and grid-based networks. All of this incurs new challenges
and opportunities for network management and the ways in which it is
approached, requiring management technology to evolve as rapidly as
the new networked worlds.
IM 2005 will be organized into technical sessions, panels, and
tutorials. In addition, it will feature application sessions focusing
on practical lessons learned by the user and vendor communities,
posters, birds-of-a-feather sessions, and vendor exhibits. In the
tradition of previous events, we strive to make the IM 2005 Symposium
the highest quality professional event of the year. Paper submissions
will undergo a stringent review process implemented by the Technical
Program Committee which includes many of the most respected experts in
the field.

Scope of EWSN 2005:
===================
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are fast emerging as a new sensing
paradigm based on the collaborative effort of large number of sensors
deployed close to or inside the phenomenon to be observed, and have
the potential of providing diverse services to numerous applications.
The realization of WSNs require intensive technical research efforts
especially on energy efficient scalable wireless ad hoc communication
protocols due to their unusual application requirements and unique
constraints. Additionally, WSNs are further evolving from simple data
transportation networks to functionally rich distributed systems such
that the tasks of event sensing and acting upon the phenomenon can be
collectively realized in an autonomous manner by sensor and actuator
nodes.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from
different backgrounds ranging from hardware to applications, to
create a forum where cross-layer integration, novel solutions for
specific problems, and the future development of WSN functionalities
can be discussed.
We encourage contributions describing innovative work on WSN. Areas
of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Hardware for WSN: transceiver concepts, wakeup radio, antenna
design, system integration, process and cost of manufacturing,
battery technology, energy scavenging
* Communication protocols: MAC and link layer problems, routing and
transport protocols tailored for WSN, redundancy, data aggregation,
and mobility support; gateways to fixed Internet; providing
functionalities like localization and synchronization
* Source coding techniques appropriate for WSN to support data fusion
* Middleware for WSN: Configuration and installation support, lookup
of available functionalities, group communication, distributed
algorithms in WSN, harmonizing node-centric and data-centric
addressing, integrating WSN in middleware architectures like .NET
* Security: primitives for appropriate cryptographic protocols,
secure system engineering
* Applications of WSN: novel applications and their requirements such
as medicine, environment control, etc.; experiences with real-world
applications
* What part will WSNs play in realizing the visions of ubiquitous
computing & communication and Ambient Intelligence.
* Prototypes, field studies, and testbeds: novel sensor node
prototypes, measurements within sensor network testbeds
* Modeling of WSN: models for WSN load/applications, mobility or
channel models

Dear all,
Ramon informed me that WG 6.3 is discussing a co-sponsorship of IEEE
International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems, June
30 - July 1, 2005 in
Marina del Rey, California, USA.
The question is what TC6 can or should do in that respect.
Sensor and Actor Networks are hot topics as well as ubiquitous networks
or pervasive computing etc.
Until now we have our MedHoc series (Mediterranean Adhoc Network series)
but this may not be enough for the mass of newly emerging topics.
For the international seminar institute in Dagstuhl we got not less
than four (!) applications for respective seminars for the
first half of 2005 with the following titles:
- cognitive networks and radios
- form and content in sensor networks
- ad-hoc geosensor networks in traffic assessment
- data always and everywhere - Management of Mobile, Ubiquitous, Pervasive,
and sensor data.
Several other proposals have been more or less related to these topics.
What is your feeling?
- Can we avoid to deal with these fields? (I don't think so).
- Should we establish a larger specialized event? (One ore two particular
sessions at the occasion of Networking 200x will probably not be enough).
- Which working group should be responsible? Or: Should we organise the
first event by TC6 and should we try to establish a WG 6.xx thereafter?
Or: Would it be enough to distribute the new topics among existing WG's
since obviously WG 6.1, 6.6, 6.8 and maybe others are involved?
** Please comment **.
Of course, this topic will be on the agenda of meeting 2004/2.
Best regards
Otto
Dear Dipak,
I received until today (August 13, 2004) the following
expressions of interest for DCSC funding in 2005:
From: For: Remark:
Kiril Boyanov MWCN'05; 750 EURO for
Fall 2005; Vedrin Jeliaskov
Marrakesh, Morocco
Koos Koen Comm. Syst. Conf. Not yet specified
in Abuja, Nigeria
Guy Leduc Middleware 2005; 750 EURO for a
November 05; participant from a
Grenoble, France developing country
Ramon Puigjaner IFIP/ACM Latin America Some delegates feel
Networking Conference; that we should not
Fall 05; Cali, Colombia sponsor events in
Colombia due to the
level of criminality
(especially in Cali)
Guy Pujolle Networking for MAN;
March 05;
Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam
Remarks:
- Colombia, Morocco, Nigeria, and Vietmnam are no members
of IFIP (and are therefore not elegible for the moment being
since DCSC funding is only for IFIP member countries;
this might be changed, however, if the motion of Max Bramer
for removing that restriction is accepted in Toulouse;
on the other hand: if the condition is not any more valid:
what might be the reason of a country for joining IFIP?).
- The requests are necessarily inconcrete: It is impossible
to ask for support of a speaker who has an accepted paper
since sometimes we don't even have a Call for Paper.
I feel that we will have to change the rules for DCSC funding.
You might allocate a reasonable sum for each TC (maybe
Proportional to the global TC fund) and that sum could be
Discussed and distributed at the occasion of the TC meetings
(in the case of TC6: at meetings 2004/2 and 2005/1).
- A priority ranking cannot be made since:
- I would have to ask the other delegates
- the requests are not concrete enough (see above)
I have ordered the requests alphabetically by the last name
of the delegate who presented it.
The request for Velin Jeliaskov is attached.
Best wishes
Otto Spaniol

the next two weeks (and for that reason I can't attend

Dear all,
Guy Leduc wrote:

Dear all,
Given this agreement (enforcing the Springer DL), does it still make
sense to address the following point raised at the last TC6 meeting :
11. Relations with IEEE and other organisations
There were discussions of digital libraries in relation to the IEEE and
the European Commission. Augusto Casaca and André Danthine suggested that
there may be funding available from IFIP and/or UNESCO. Augusto Casaca
also commented that a digital library would be much cheaper if it were
not retrospective.
A task force was proposed to look into this. Volunteers included André
Danthine, Dominique Gaiti, Günter Haring, Arun Iyengar, Guy Leduc, Dipak
Khakhar, and Guy Pujolle
Action Point (AP62/07): The digital library task force: to decide who
should act as chairman of the task force and to start work.
Best regards,
Guy
PS: Do we have the final version of the minutes, taking corrections into
account ?
----------------
Indeed, our possibilities appear to be more limited (which is not so bad
per se)
since we should prefer or use exclusiveley the Springer DL offers.
Thus agenda point 11 appears to be less relevant when considering digital
libraries. By the way: It has shown once again that it is almost impossible
to start an initiative if no initiator is immediately fixed (the distributed
election problem). Would you, Guy (Leduc) protest very much if we nominate
you as the chairman of this task force group?
There are more points to be discussed which are related to
our cooperation with IEEE/ACM and other organisations. This concerns
sponsorship questions, publication questions etc. We will do that at meeting
2004/2 in Bangkok - or before in the task group.
Best regards
Otto
p.s.: A attach a modified version of the minutes where I tried to incorporate
the corrections.
Dear all,
please find enclosed the publications agreement between
IFIP and "Springer Science + Business media" together with
the bulk price list.
Leon Straus (the responsible from 's side wrote to the TC chairmen:
-----------------
You can distribute this version (including the price lists) to your working
group chairs for information. Please ask them to treat this in an
