The 1st IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor
Systems (MASS-2004)
October 25-27, 2004, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
http://www.ececs.uc.edu/~cdmc/mass
Sponsored by IEEE TC on Distributed Processing and IEEE TC on Simulation
Researches on wireless networks and mobile computing research has
until recently
concentrated on single-hop networks (network nodes communicating
directly to a fixed
infrastructure), such as cellular or satellite systems. Ad-hoc and
sensor networks cover
multi-hop scenarios (network nodes communicating via other network
nodes) such as
conference, hospital, battlefield, rescue, and monitoring scenarios.
This conference
covers the area of ad-hoc and sensor systems, from physical issues up
to applications
aspects.
Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- MAC protocols for ad-hoc and sensor networks (801.11, Bluetooth, etc)
- Routing protocols (unicast, multicast, broadcast, geocast, etc)
- Power-aware and energy-efficient design
- QoS, security, and fault-tolerant issues
- Location and mobility management
- Topology construction and coverage maintenance
- Distributed Algorithms (self-configuration, scheduling,
synchronization, etc)
- Data gathering, fusion, and dissemination
- Operating system and middleware support
- Complexity analysis of algorithms
- Analytical, mobility, and validation models
- Applications of ad-hoc and sensor networks
Paper submission
All submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a
PDF of their full papers. Papers must not exceed 10 single-spaced and
two-column
pages using at least 11 point size type on 8.5 * 11 inches pages.

=======================================================
Background
----------
The Internet and Web provide more connection facilities, hence the
interactions between man-man, man-machine and machine-machine will increase
and communication will have an important role in modern systems. In order to
obtain effective and efficient communication, artistic, social and technical
issues have to be tackled in a holistic and integrated manner.
Unfortunately, communication techniques, concepts and solutions which have
been developed so far treat these issues separately, so that there arises a
need for communication researchers and practitioners in different fields
(engineering, science and arts) to meet, share their experience and explore
all possibilities of developing integrated and advanced solutions which
incorporate ideas from such disciplines as communication arts, art design,
linguistics, Web technologies, telecommunications, computer science and
artificial intelligence.

Subject: [ifip-tc6] WCC 2006 responses
Dear all,
the picture of responses concerning a possible participation
of TC6 at the World Computer Congress is similar but not uniform.
Almost all responses said that they do not believe that it is
worthwhile for TC6 to participate in any WCC, regardless of its
location. This is in some cases also supported by personal
experience with WCC (e.g. expressed by Lyman Chapin).
Another problem is the political situation in the area
and (sometimes serious) concerns about that are expressed by many.
A third problem is that we don't have a TC6 delegate
from Israel since 1986(!) and this would make the
organisation quite complicated - even if that could be done
in theory also by somebody who is not the Israelian TC6 delegate.
On the other hand, a few delegates would be willing to cooperate
if a workshop of our successful series would be colocated
to WCC 2006 in Jerusalem.
Having checked our calendar of events and the titles of our
conferences I might see one possible candidate for such a
colocation, namely MedHoc 2006. This would fit to the
region (Mediterranean Sea) and probably to the topics of interest
for the region (Ad Hoc Networking). But it will not be easy
to go forward with such an idea since
- MedHoc 2006 might already been allocated to another country
- We would need a bid for that from a group of experts of Israel.
Nevertheless that is the only more or less concrete "offer"
which could be made by TC6 and it is not very likely that it could
be realised.
I've sent a corresponding message to Moshe Gotlieb (see below).
Please send me a note if you disagree.
Best regards
Otto
---------------
My message to Moshe Gotlieb (basically a reformulation
of mmy above message):
Dear Moshe,
we have now a more complete picture about the "feelings" of
IFIP TC6 delegates concerning a possible participation of TC6
in Jerusalem.
The vast majority of those who responded said that TC6
should not play an active role at WCC **irrespective of
the location**. Nevertheless even some of those who expressed
this statement said that this must not necessarily preclude
some of our running events to be colocated with WCC.
The question is how we could arrange such a colocation early enough
and concretely enough. A possible candidate which comes to my mind
for several reasons would be our MedHoc series (MedHoc =
Mediterranean Ad Hoc Networking). The former events of
this series have been held in Italy and in Tunisia, the next one will
be in summer 2004 in Turkey; please contact Ian Akyildiz
(ian(a)ece.gatech.edu) for that. If it would be intended to have
MedHoc 2006 in Israel - possibly as part of the WCC - then some
members from the Israelian AdHoc networking scene (there are plenty
of them) should attend MedHoc 2004 and make a bid to have the
event two years later in Israel. A similar strategy might be tried if
another of our running event series should be colocated with WCC.
Nevertheless, it will not be easy to succeed with such a colocation
attempt since many delegates consider the positical situation as
too unstable. Whereas we sincerely hope that this will not any more
the case in 2006 (but who knows?) there are many delegates who would
not take the risk which according to their belief is incorporated
with a travel to Jerusalem.
For the organisation of an event in Israel we would need a trustworthy
person or society. This person is normally the countries delegate to TC6
but as I told you there is no such person since 1986.
In principle the organisation could also be done by another
local representative but then the organisation would not be easier.
In summary, TC6 has the following concerns about a participation
at WCC 2006 in Jerusalem:
1. Most delegates feel that TC6 should not participate at a WCC
irrespective of the location since they beleive that WCC's
are outdated.
2. We don't have an Israelian delegate to TC6 since a long time
but we would need such a person for the organisation.
3. The political situation is considered by many delegates
as too unstable and as too unpredictable.
Consequently, TC6 is - for the moment being - unable to propose
a concrete contribution for WCC 2006 in Jerusalem. We might think
about a colocation of an event but this is very very speculative.
Best regards
Otto

SCOPE
The emergence and adoption of broadband wireless access standards,
such as 802.16, 802.16a and 802.11a/g, offers exciting new
possibilities for high-bandwidth data communication over the "last
mile". A significant use of such high bandwidth may lie in the use of
a variety of multimodal sensors for monitoring and control of diverse
geographic areas. Such sensors may be used for remote video/audio
surveillance and active monitoring of telemetry data in city blocks,
highways, airports, hotels, campuses and a variety of other indoor and
outdoor environments.
This workshop is intended for the presentation and discussion of novel
architectures, algorithms and applications of sensor networks based on
the use of wireless broadband channels. Areas of interest include
problems related to energy efficiency, dynamic control and reliability
of such sensor network deployments, especially under the expected
resource constraints on the sensor devices. Of particular interest are
visions, practical case studies, demonstrations or pilots of
innovative techniques for building sensor networks using either
broadband local or metropolitan wireless networks.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Multimedia Interfaces for Wireless Sensors
* Broadband vs. Narrowband Wireless Sensing
* Video and Audio Sensing Applications over Broadband Networks

Dear TC6 colleagues,
I've collected some information on Citeseer
regarding the impact of our TC6 events.
Please find these results below. It's always
useful to know how our events are ranked with
respect to others. This could be part of an
agenda item on statistics of TC6 events in Athens
and also in relation with publishers.
Note that these data have been computed in May
2003, which means that only events organized
until 2002 had a chance to have an impact. So,
recent events are not well ranked, which is
normal.
Note also that with citeseer only papers
available electronically are considered. So, a
first step in reaction to this would be that all
individuals publishing in our conferences put all
their papers on their web pages and send their
URLs to citeseer for reference. Unfortunately
this is not always allowed by the publishers, but
note that IEEE and ACM allow this. And I remember
that Kluwer had accepted too for events where
some authors would have otherwise refused to sign
the copyright transfer form.
A last comment in that only conferences
referenced in the DBLP database are taken into
account. And some TC6 conferences are not there.
Some reaction is needed. Perhaps each WG
chairperson could do the necessary steps to
register them as IFIP events: check
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/series/ifip/index.html
Best regards,
Guy

(higher is better) - May 2003 (CiteSeer)
Generated from documents in the CiteSeer </cs> database. This analysis
does not include citations where one or more authors of the citing and
cited articles match. This list is automatically generated and may
contain errors. Only venues with at least 25 articles are shown.
Impact is estimated using the average citation rate, where citations are
normalized using the average citation rate for all articles in a given
year, and transformed using ln (n+1) where n is the number of citations.
Publication details obtained from DBLP <http://dblp.uni-trier.de/> by
Michael Ley <http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/>. Only venues
contained in DBLP are included.
