Dear all,
a question concerning LNCS publication was directed by Guy Leduc (thank you very much, Guy, for that) to Alfred Hofmann from Springer. Even if this quzestion was only for WG 6.1 I think that it is valid also for all other WG's and for TC6 as a whole.
Best regards Otto

Dear Guy Leduc:
Thank you very much for your mail regarding publication of the proceedings resulting from IFIP WG 6.1 conferences/workshops in LNCS, now under the IFIP-LNCS clauses of the IFIP-Springer contract.
I am well aware of your role for IFIP WG 6.1 and of your scientific work generally; indeed, I had been knocking at your office door when I visitied Andre Danthine at Liege (now quite some time ago). Your analysis of what out of the WG 6.1 activities had been published so far in LNCS is accurate and in accordance with my understanding. I also would take this opportunity to express my thanks to IFIP WG 6.1 and you personally for publishing in LNCS at time when this still was not officially agreed upon.
As to your question about the status of the six 2005 events listed in your mail regarding publication in LNCS, I do not see any problem: some/most of these six meetings are accepted (at least in principle), and given the previous publication record of these meeting in LNCS, evaluation of the inquires in discussion with the LNCS series editors is rather a matter of formality. So, please take it from this message that all six meeting can and will be published in LNCS also in 2005. There is other new inquireis refering to the IFIP Springer/LNCS Agreement which do casue more problems (due to the less technical orientation of some of them).
Below, I attach the general terms for IFIP-LNCS publication. Roughly speaking, compared to standard (non-IFIP) LNCS, a list price mark-up of around 30 % is applied in order to compensate for the publication fee we have to pay IFIP for these proceedings. Regarding complimentary copies and discsounts for buying conference copies the same terms are applied like for standard LNCS; no mimimum underwriting guarantee is imposed to workshop/conference organizers for buying a certain number of their books, small workshops in principle can do with the 50 free copies alone.
If you have further questions I would be happy to talk to you on the phone; I am sure we will have an opportunity to meet in person at some conference (somewhere/somewhen).
I look forward to cooperating with you and the organizers of IFIP WG 6.1 events for publication of these proceedings in LNCS.
Best regards, Alfred

As to the financial side, no royalties are paid for editing LNCS Proceedings, however a standard number of 50 free copies of the book are given to the editor(s). Additional copies needed for distribution at the meeting or to contributing authors etc. can be bought at a discount of (at least) 45 % off the list price; this discount is increased to 47.5 % or 50 %, etc. if at least 100 copies or at least 200 copies, etc. are bought (respectively). For proceedings with more than some 750 pages, the aforementioned discounts can be (slightly) improved as well as the number of free copies.
The list price of an IFIP-LNCS Proceedings essentially depends on the number of pages needed, as shown in the 2004 IFIP-LNCS Proceedings Price List below. Please note that, besides the cost for the books also the transportation cost has to be covered. Please note that, besides the costs for the books, the transportation costs also have to be covered and that there might be a slight price increase for 2005.
2004 IFIP-LNCS Price List ********************************************************* NET LIST PRICES FOR LECTURE NOTES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE published in cooperation with IFIP (effective: February 1, 2004)

The page number ranges refer to the total number of pages needed (i.e. Roman numbered front matter pages plus Arabic page count).
This list gives the full EUR list prices. For bulk orders of conference proceedings a discount off these list prices is granted; this discount depends on the number of copies bought. In addition to the cost for books shiped to conferences, the transportation cost has to be covered.
The list prices of volumes with more than 800 pages are calculated individually. As a rough approximation, EUR 4.00 are to be added for each additional 50 pages needed beyond 800 pages; there are (slight) reductions for high printrun titles or two-volume proceedings.

Dear Mr. Hofmann,
I've been the chairman of IFIP WG6.1 since April 1998.
Our Working Group has been the sponsor (or sometimes co-sponsor) of several conferences and the following proceedings have already been published in LNCS:
Middleware (IFIP is main sponsor, ACM and USENIX are co-sponsor)
Middleware 5 Lake District UK 1998
Middleware 6 New York USA 2000
Middleware 7 Heidelberg Germany 2001
Middleware 8 Rio de Janeiro Brazil 2003
Middleware 9 Toronto Canada 2004
IWQoS (IFIP is co-sponsor with IEEE Communication Society)
IWQOS 9 Karlsruhe Germany 2001
IWQOS 11 Monterey, CA USA 2003
FORTE (IFIP is full sponsor)
FORTE 22 Houston (Texas) USA 2002
FORTE 23 Berlin Germany 2003
FORTE 24 Madrid Spain 2004
TESTCOM (IFIP is full sponsor)
Testcom 15 Sophia Antipolis France 2003
Testcom 16 Oxford UK 2004
FMOODS (IFIP is full sponsor)
FMOODS 6 Paris France 2003
DAIS (IFIP is full sponsor)
DAIS 4 Paris France 2003
As WG chair I always advised our conference organizers to publish the proceedings in LNCS (despite the fact that the IFIP official publisher was KAP).
Now, the new contract between IFIP and Springer Science + Business Media, and in particular its article 38, specifies explicitely that IFIP proceedings can be published in IFIP LNCS, and I am strongly in favour of this.
For 2005 you've probably been already sollicited by several organisers of our events. Otherwise, I'd like to inform you that we would like to publish the following proceedings in IFIP LNCS:
Middleware 10 Grenoble France 2005
FORTE 25 Taipei Taiwan 2005
Testcom 17 Montreal Canada 2005
FMOODS 7 Athens Greece 2005
DAIS 5 Athens Greece 2005
IWQOS 13 Passau Germany 2005
Could you let me know if you agree?
Note in particular that IWQOS has been mostly published by IEEE (the co-sponsor) so far, but some organizers sometimes prefer LNCS. In 2005, they are contemplating the possiblity to publish in LNCS again, and I would like to confirm that this is indeed possible.
In particular, I would appreciate receiving the data concerning the bulk price of LNCS volumes for organizers.
I'm looking forward to reading you.
Guy Leduc IFIP WG6.1 chair
Dear all,
Note that the price of IFIP-LNCS is 30% more expensive than regular LNCS due to royalties paid to IFIP (according to Alfred Hofmann), ... ... although IFIP does not get 30 / 1.30 = 23.1 % of royalties on the books, as far as I know.
Any explanation?
Also, the fact that IFIP-LNCS is more expensive than regular LNCS is a problem in itself, because some organizers may be tempted to contact Springer on their own (without IFIP sponsorship) to try and get cheaper book prices... as the 30% increase can be considered as unfair.
Therefore, it is essential that Alfred Hofmann be well aware of the conference series that regularly publish in IFIP-LNCS, so that he can apply the IFIP-LNCS contract and price.
Best regards, Guy

Any explanation?
Not really, but: If we compare the "relatively tiny" proceedings cost with the huge registration fees then .... a simple calculation shows the following:
Suppose the cost per proceedings is 100 EURO (for 650 pages) and this might cost 30% less, i.e. 70 EURO i f you approach Springer directly
and if we see that we get 50 free copies (worth 5.000 EURO or at least 3.500 EURO) and that we get nevertheless some royalties
and if we now compare that with the enormous registration fees in the order of 500 EURO (even for conferences in Morocco!)
then: what's the heck with book prices which might be perhaps 2 or 3 EURO lower per unit (if we count everything).
Also, the fact that IFIP-LNCS is more expensive than regular LNCS is a problem in itself, because some organizers may be tempted to contact Springer on their own (without IFIP sponsorship) to try and get cheaper book prices... as the 30% increase can be considered as unfair.
If the organisors want to do that we can't stop them. Usual practice shows that they better increase their registration fee by 10 EURO (480 or 490 EURO makes no difference at all) and then the problem is solved.
Therefore, it is essential that Alfred Hofmann be well aware of the conference series that regularly publish in IFIP-LNCS, so that he can apply the IFIP-LNCS contract and price.
I agree.
