Message received from Klaus Brunnstein (IFIP president):
From: Klaus Brunnstein [mailto:brunnstein@informatik.uni-hamburg.de]
Dear members of IFIP General Assembly,
it is with deep personal regret that I have to inform you that IPA
Information-technology Association of Israel, our Israeli national
member society, has informed us yesterday evening that they had decided
to cancel WCC 2006 at Jerusalem.
At this time, I wish to inform GA that Moshe (who btw suffered recently
a severe personal loss in his family, for which I have forwarded IFIPs
condolescenses) has tried very hard until the last minute to make this
event possible. During a discussion in IPA board, concerns about the
political situation and its impact on participation from other regions
of the world was responsible for the cancellation. Moshe will report at
GA in Toulouse. At this time, I wish to thank Moshe for his work and
devotion and extend our best wishes for improvements in peace for the
whole region: Shalom, Moshe.
The cancellation comes "1 minute after 12", as our usual procedure is to
invite IFIP people to next World Computer Congress at the present one.
With just 4 weeks left and most people absent for vacation, it is not
very likely that we can get a fair new bid within so short time.
Nevertheless, on behalf of EB, I ask whether some member society feels
able to organise the 19th World Computer Congress at end-August 2006,
followed by a GA at that location.
Bids are invited to reach IFIP Secretariat (cc: president´s email adress) no later than August 15, 2004 (midnight MEST = GMT+2:00 hrs)
Bids shall include the usual details (finances, locations, etc) though
possibly not at that level of detail as usually.
EB is prepared to analyse the bids. If there is just ONE relevant
candidate without any practical alternative, SBC chair Prof. Bobillier
has informed
EB that a decision can be taken by EB. This would permit an annoucement
of a relocated WCC-2006 at the Congress Dinner on August 25,2004. In any
other case, the decision will be deferred to GA.
Sorry for the bad news, and dont punish the messenger (as in ancient
times :-) Thanx for your support, and best wishes: Klaus Brunnstein,
president (July 23, 2004)
