here is a message from Roberto Sabella (RM/ERI) roberto.sabella@ericsson.com who feels concerned about the future of ONDM conference series.
Many things are not fully clear to me here: for example, I didn't know that apparently a selection procedure for a new chairman of WG 6.10 has been initiatied (without a mandate from TC6 !) and that somebody is known (not to me!) who would directly become the new chairman of WG 6.10. Formally at least, this person will have to be approved by the TC6 delegates.

This was number 9 already in this series. Since then it has disappeaed form the scenery. I believe that something was planned in Copenhagen (Lars Dittmann?) but I'm not fully sure.
There are no information from WG 6.10 about upcoming events, most other WG's have given their input for the adaptation of the TC6 calendar.
The problem with ONDM will have to be treated in Coimbra.

Dear Otto,
the reason why I am writing you is that I am worried and concerned about the way ONDM is doing in the last years. Unfortunately, my engagement prevented me to be more active in the activities of WG 10 on optical networks and in the organization of the conference itself. However, I care that conference that I contribute to launch in the first years, organizing the second edition in Roma (1998) and organizing workshops inside that conference on hot topics inviting highly reputed experts worldwide.
An easy evalution of the ONDM evolution during the years can be done using measurable parameters, such as the number of participants to the conference, the number of published papers, and possibly the number of books that have been purschased. If the ONDM conference was successful those numbers had to increase significantly. In addition, there is another parameter that is not easily measured that is the quality of papers.
I tried to rise this question with the chairman of WG 10, in occasion of the election of the co-chairman that, according to what he said, would directly become the new chairman of WG 10.
I think in fact that if the ONDM was re-launched, IFIP could benefit having a good brand to manage. I also think that the co-support of IEEE could be useful to further enlarge the community of perspective authors. In my opinion, if the scientific community of ONDM become large, IFIP can leverage on it, and organize other relevant initiatives such as edited books, lecturers and so forth, pushing the brand of IFIP.
In all, I wish to ask you to rise that problem in order to find good solutions within our community.
