Dear all,
I've just learned that Koos has resigned from his
position as South African delegate in TC6.
The South African society has nominated Pieter
Kritzinger. I know Pieter as a WG6.1
representative and have already welcomed him in
TC6.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Koos
for his long term involvement in TC6 (in fact he
was already there in 1998 when I joined as WG6.1
chair and I don't know when he actually joined
TC6). I hope we will all meet him again at our
TC6 meeting in South Africa in 2008.
Best regards,
Guy

Special Session:
Data Dissemination and Communication Protocols in Sensor Networks
The Third IET International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE'07), the University of Ulm, Germany, September 24-25, 2007.
Special Session 1 - http://www.uni-ulm.de/ie07/specialsession1.html
Main Website - http://www.uni-ulm.de/ie07/
-------------
Description
-------------
Sensor networks are used in various pervasive and ubiquitous applications. These networks usually consist of a large number of sensors that are deployed at remote and inaccessible places. As most of the sensors are wireless, energy-efficient data dissemination and communication protocols are needed; otherwise, batteries will rapidly drain and network connectivity and coverage will become unacceptable. On one hand, we want the sensor nodes to be active and monitor the environment. On the other hand, we want the sensor nodes to conserve their energy by sleeping significant amount of time. Further, depending on the application, robustness and responsiveness can be very critical.
The objective of this special session is to provide an opportunity for academic researchers and industry practitioners to present and discuss experiences, emerging applications, and research results for data dissemination and communication protocols in sensor networks.
---------
Topics
---------
Topics include but not are limited to the following:
- Energy-efficient data dissemination
- Databases and query optimization
- Routing protocols
- Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols
- Connectivity and coverage
- Topology and Sleep Scheduling
- Robustness
- Security, privacy, and trust
- Smart homes
- Software design and architectures
- Intelligent agent architectures
- Machine learning and distributed data mining
- Pervasive and ubiquitous systems and services
- Industrial experience and emerging applications
- Instructions for Manuscripts
------------
Submission
------------
Authors are requested to submit a PDF file for their manuscript following the submission guideline available at http://www.uni-ulm.de/ie07/. All manuscripts should be submitted through the conference submission system and choosing the area of the special session. The papers should also be emailed to the special session organizer for reference.

It is a pitty that Koos has reseigned to his position as South African
representative at the TC6 because he is one of the historical members.
However, South Africa has done a good choice for replacing Koos; I know
Pieter since long time ago and I am very happy to know that he will be the
next South African represetnative.
I also hope that we will meet Koos in the TC6 meeting to be held in south
Africa next year.
Best regards
Ramon

* CALL FOR PAPERS *
* *
* GridNets 2007 *
* First International Conference on Networks for Grid Applications *
* Co-Sponsored by Create-Net, ICST and INRIA *
* In-technical cooperation with ACM SIGARCH *
* Lyon, France, October 17-19, 2007 *
* http://www.gridnets.org/2007 *
* *
*********************************************************************
The GridNets conference series is an annual international meeting which
provides a focused and highly interactive forum where researchers and
technologists have the opportunity to present and discuss leading
research, developments, and future directions in the Grid networking
area. The objective of this event is to serve as both the premier
conference presenting best Grid Networking research and a forum where
new concepts can be introduced and explored.
The previous events in this series were: GridNets 2004 in San Jose (USA),
GridNets 2005 in Boston (USA), GridNets 2006 in San Jose (USA). All of
these events have been successful in attracting high quality papers and
a wide international participation. From the first event through the
fourth, we have been known as the GridNets Workshop affiliated with
the IEEE BroadNets conference series. For this, our fifth event, we
will convene our first meeting as a conference and in Europe.
Grid developers and practicioners are increasingly realising the
importance of an efficient network support. Entire classes of
applications would greatly benefit by a network-aware Grid middleware,
able to effectively manage the network resource in terms of scheduling,
access and use. Conversely, the peculiar requirements of Grid
applications provide stimulating drivers for new challenging research
towards the development of Grid-aware networks.
Cooperation between Grid middleware and network infrastructure driven
by a common control plane is a key factor to effectively empower the
global Grid platform for the execution of network-intensive applications,
requiring massive data transfers, very fast and low-latency connections,
and stable and guaranteed transmission rates. Big e-science projects,
as well as industrial and engineering applications for data analysis,
image processing, multimedia, or visualisation just to name a few are
awaiting an efficient Grid network support. They would be boosted by a
global Grid platform enabling end-to-end dynamic bandwidth allocation,
broadband and low-latency access, interdomain access control, and other
network performance monitoring capabilities.
Scope
-----
* Network architectures and technologies for grids
* Integration of advanced optical networking technologies into the
grid environment.
* End to end lightpath provisioning software systems and emergent
standards
* The network as a first class grid resource: network resource
information publication, brokering and co-scheduling with other Grid
resources.
* Interaction of the network with distributed data management systems.
* Network monitoring, traffic characterisation and performance analysis
* Inter-layer interactions: optical layer with higher layer protocols,
integration among layers
* Experience with pre-production optical network infrastructures and
exchange points
* Peer-to-peer network enhancements applied to the Grid
* Network support for wireless and ad hoc Grids
* Data replication and multicasting strategies and novel data transport
protocols
* Fault-tolerance, self healing networks
* Security and scalability issues when connecting a large number of sites
within a virtual organization VPN.
* Simulations
* New concepts and requirements which may fundamentally reshape the evolution
of Networks.

During the abstract submission process, author and password information will need to be entered and a Paper ID# will be assigned. This Paper ID# and password will be used to upload papers. The abstract must NOT contain any ITAR-related, classified, or proprietary information.
Abstracts will only be used to help define the sessions. The Unclassified Author’s Kit provides instructions to authors for preparation of the full and final manuscripts and the required forms. Full papers will be reviewed for acceptance only when all appropriate forms have been completed and received.
Classified Technical Program Submission Process:
All persons wishing to attend and/or participate in the Classified Technical Program must, at a minimum, possess a current Secret personnel security clearance and be a U.S. citizen. Non-U.S. originated papers will NOT be accepted for the Classified Technical Program. All abstracts for the Classified Technical Program must be unclassified. Please submit a title and a brief unclassified abstract (up to 2000 characters) of your intended paper via email to: casto.milcom2007(a)harris.com. Each submission requires author name, affiliation, citizenship, address, phone and fax numbers, email address, and the applicable area. For papers with more than one author, indicate the point of contact. Do NOT use WAMS to submit abstracts, full papers, or the final papers for the Classified Technical Program. All papers for the Classified Technical Program must be prepared following the instructions and formatting guidelines in the Classified Author’s Kit.
Proposals for Tutorials and Panels:
MILCOM 2007 solicits proposals for unclassified half-day tutorials, and unclassified and classified panels on state-of-the art communications, networking, and interoperability technologies. The tutorial proposals should include a brief outline of the tutorial, instructor biography, and relevant instructor experience. The Unclassified Tutorials
Kit provides the applicable forms and the formatting guidelines for the tutorial material. Please forward your proposals to the MILCOM 2007 Tutorial Program Chair, Rich Folio, at folio.milcom2007(a)harris.com.
Proposals for Panels:
The proposals for panels should include a brief outline of the panel discussion topics, panel participants, and panel moderator along with their bios. A Panels Kit provides the information about the applicable forms and the guidelines for the preparation of the panel material. Please forward your proposals to the MILCOM 2007 Panels Program Chair, Leo deCardenas, at decardenas.milcom2007(a)harris.com.

**** Papers Submission Deadline --- March 31, 2007 ****
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless multi-hop communication is envisioned in multiple scenarios where
network nodes communicate via other network nodes: conferences, hospitals,
battlefields, rescue operations, environment control, cars-to-cars, and
monitoring scenarios. Wireless mesh networks have been applied as
alternatives for providing Internet access in remote business and
residential areas. Wireless sensor networks are being deployed for several
industrial control processes and for monitoring environment. This conference
aims to address multi-hop ad-hoc and sensor networks systems, covering
topics ranging from technology issues up to the applications aspects.
Original manuscripts that focus on the analytical modeling,
protocol/algorithm design, and/or experimental studies of the following
topics of interest are sought:
* physical layer impact on higher level protocols
* MAC protocols for ad-hoc and sensor networks (802.11, 802.15.4,
UWB) Provisioning of wireless QoS in terms of bandwidth and delay assurance
* Routing protocols (unicast, multicast, broadcast, geocast) and
routing metrics
* Data transport in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks
* Power-aware and energy-efficient design
* Topology construction and coverage maintenance
* Cross layer design and optimization
* Incentives and game theoretic approaches in wireless ad-hoc
networks
* Localization and synchronization in wireless sensor networks
* Data gathering, fusion, and dissemination in wireless sensor
* Reliability, security, and trustworthiness issues in ad hoc and
sensor networks
* Operating system and middleware support
* Measurements and practical experience from experimental systems and
test-beds
* Modeling, analysis and performance evaluation
* Mesh networking
* Delay tolerant networks and opportunistic networking
* Handoff and mobility management and seamless internetworking
* Peer-to-peer, overlay, and content distribution wireless ad hoc
networks
* Reliability, security, and trustworthiness issues in ad hoc and
sensor networks
