Dear Roger,
In our last meeting in Budapest we had been working on the refinement of the
IFIP conditions for the new bid. We sent our contributions to Leon Strous,
who included them in the final document, which has already reached you last
week.
Your mail from May 21st with the news that IFIP and Springer are in the same
company now, reached us after the TC6 meeting. This is definitely new
information which needs to be considered. I circulated the mail within TC6.
I have got a few comments and suggestions from TC6 members on your mail. I
decided that instead of trying to reach by e-mail a consensual message to
send to you, as the time urges, I will forward in separate mails the most
relevant messages that I have received from TC6 members. I really hope that
they can help us in reaching the best decision. Please notice that all of
them insist that electronic publication is also mandatory.
Best regards
Augusto

Dear TC6 members,
I forward you the mail from Leon Strous (TC11 chairman) on the publications
issue.
Please do not get confused with the different mails circulating on
publications.
This mail is the result of the work that the TC chairs had agreed to do
after the Council meeting in Bilbao. This is the final document, whose draft
version we have analysed in Budapest.
The mail from Roger Johnson, which I circulated to you a few days ago is
orthogonal to this one. Up to the moment I have only had feed back to that
mail from TC6 members. The attached message from Leon does not make any
reference to that mail and proceeds as had been agreed in Bilbao.
I will investigate the situation and keep you informed.
Best regards
Augusto

Subject: Re: IFIP Publications issue
Dear Roger, Prins, Basie and Klaus,
we have received comments from most of the TC-chairs and some EB members.
Please find attached the adjusted
requirements document (version 30-5) where I have tried to accomodate all
comments. This list could be the
input for the Request for Proposals. According to our time plan, the next
step is that the IFIP President
appoints the negotiating sub-committee who will start the tender process.
I was asked to bring forward the wish not to limit the tender process to
only a few well-known publishers but
to start an open tender process. My suggestion in this respect is to compose
a long-list of possible
candidates who will be approached with the question whether they would be
interested in bidding. The
requirements document could be used to inform those candidates about what we
are looking for. The list of
interested parties will probably a short-list.
Concerning the IFIP Publications Policy document, I have received only one
comment. It was suggested to
replace "IT" by "Information Science and Technology". I have no problem with
that but have not changed the
document yet. Please advise how to proceed in order to finalize / formalize
this document.
kind regards,
Leon

Call for Papers
2004 IEEE CONSUMER COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE
“Consumer Networking: Closing the Digital Divide”
(Precedes the CES 2004 International Consumer Electronics
Show: www.cesweb.org), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA / 5-8 January, 2004
http://www.ccnc2004.org/
Sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society
The first IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference
(CCNC'2004) will be held on 5-8 January, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA,
just prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (www.cesweb.org).
The demand for networked consumer systems and devices is large and
growing rapidly. At home, in a car or truck, at work or at play,
Internet citizens want transparent internetworking for the systems and
devices that provide entertainment, information, and communications.
This internetworking should be on-demand, with whomever or
whatever they want, regardless of time or location. As a result,
consumer networking is gaining increasing attention from industry,
spawning a range of dramatically different solutions including wireless,
wireline, and power line networked communications environments, each
with their own strengths and special challenges to overcome. This in
turn has defined the scope of consumer networking to range from body and
personal area networking, to home networking and wide area networking.
In the not too distant future, we will see ad hoc networking augmented
with sensors sharing networked knowledge that enables devices and
systems to seamlessly interact with the Internet and wide area wireless
systems such as WiFi, 3G and future 4G networks. And this is just the
beginning!
This phenomenon, "Consumer Communications and Networking," has been
attracting many researchers in diverse areas from networking to consumer
electronics. This conference will present the latest approaches and
technical solutions in the area of consumer networking, enabling
technologies such as middleware and multimedia, and novel applications
and services. The conference will include a peer-reviewed program of
technical sessions, technology application panels, tutorials, and poster
sessions. CCNC 2004 provides a compelling forum for formal discussion
and socialization of many of these research challenges with seasoned
practitioners and colleagues from both industry and academia.
Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not
under review in any other conference or journal in the following, but
not limited to, topic areas:

I too support Otto's view but Guy's comments and questions ought also to be
relayed to Roger Johnson.
I'm sure the publications committee are looking for alternative publishers
but if anyone has any ideas, they ought to pass them on to Roger.
Two questions:
Has anyone had any experience with "print on demand" book publishers?
Have our contacts with electronic publishing come up with anything useful?
