IFIP Information Release
Bratislava, 15 November 2002 - The Slovak Institute of Informatics and Statistics provided the venue for the regular meeting of IT STAR, a regional initiative in Central East Europe [ http://www.ifip.or.at/it-star ] organized under the auspices of IFIP. The meeting was attended by the representatives of all IT STAR members* and reviewed its current organization and activities including national IT priorities related to IT STAR, members' interest in IFIP's Task Force on IT and Sport, the ECDL administration system in the Czech Republic and members' interests in supporting a project for open source ECDL testing based on OpenOffice.org and Linux/Windows. The key item of the Bratislava meeting was a Proposal for an IT-STAR Professional Pool of Experts with the objectives to develop a regional system based on national databases. Experts who meet jointly established criteria and requirements would be certified and included in the system which is intended to facilitate the establishment of expert teams. Such teams would be available to national governments and to the UN system, the EU and not-for-profit organizations in executing international and national projects and other short term activities. The proposal was accepted and the specific elements, including database specifications, certification criteria, coordination, legal and financial issues, would be prepared and considered in 2003.
The next regular IT STAR meeting is scheduled for the first week of June 2003 in Opatija, Croatia. IFIP's members from Bulgaria and Greece have expressed their interest to join. The computer societies of Yugoslavia and Macedonia, currently not members of IFIP, would also be invited. It is expected that these 4 societies would join IT STAR and its membership would grow to 11 societies.
