IFIP Information Release
In May 1997, Garry Kasparov, the then reigning World Chess Champion was defeated by IBM's Deep Blue Supercomputer in a fascinating game followed in real time via the web by millions of chess and computing fans.
Five years later, in May 2002, IFIP and IPSJ, the Information Processing Society of Japan, will test NEC's ability to produce "intelligent" machines by staging another board game competition between a computer and a human, this time a former champion in "Othello" [also known as "Reversi"]. This game will take place during IFIP's first IWEC conference in the Sharp Conference Hall, Makuhari, Japan from 14 to17 May, 2002.
Here is what Dr. Tak Kamae, the General Chair of IWEC wrote today to the IFIP Executive Director:
"The reason we chose the reversi is that it is simple and does not take a long time. Fortunately there are several previous world champions in Japan ... NEC has a good software of reversi and will kindly provide it to us without any fee. Such demo was once done in New Jersey using NEC's software. We would like to exhibit the real time demo at IWEC on Internet ."
IWEC is the first conference of IFIP's Committee for Cooperation with Industry (CCI) and IFIP's Task Force on Entertainment Computing. These initiatives were promoted by the Past IFIP Vice-President and Japanese GA representative, Dr. T. Miura. CCI is currently chaired by Dr. J. Lee, IEEE CS GA representative to IFIP.
