************************************************************************ Information Release - IFIP President meets Slovenian Statesmen ************************************************************************ IFIP President Klaus Brunnstein visited Slovenia for a library conference on 11 -13 November in Maribor where he delivered a keynote lecture on safety considerations for the library use of the Internet. Given the excellent relations between IFIP and the Slovenian IT community and policy makers, meetings were also arranged with Slovenian President Kuèan, President of Parliament Pahor, Minister of the Information Society Gantar and Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sport Pejovnik. The successful development of the IT STAR initiative -- http://www.ifip.or.at/it-star -- was noted and recognized as an important forum for regional IT cooperation. ************************************************************************** Information Release - IFIP Executive Director meets UN Leaders ************************************************************************** On Monday, 25 November the IFIP Executive Director received a letter from the UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura [JP] confirming that UNESCO's "Executive Board, at its 165th session (October 2002), decided to renew the formal consultative relations between UNESCO and IFIP"
Later this week, on 27 and 28 November, Plamen Nedkov visited UNESCO for a planning meeting of civil society representatives to select topics and organize an online discussion as an input to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The meeting was opened by Director General Matsuura. The President of the UN WSIS PrepCom, Adama Samassekou [Mali], was also there to discuss matters related to the WSIS organization and the civil society input. The IFIP Executive Director briefed Messrs. Matsuura and Samassekou on preparations of IFIP's World IT FORUM [ ref. http://www.witfor.org]. As co-chair of WITFOR Commission 4 on "Empowerment and Participation", Mr. Nedkov met with the other co-chair, Mrs. Monique Fouilhoux, President of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, and with representatives of UNESCO and ICSU for a strategy session related to WITFOR preparations.
