Dear All,
It's a special day at the Secretariat as it is Dorothy's Birthday. Early this morning, the Delivery Co. carried out a mass flower picking in neighboring gardens, parks etc. ;-))
Apropos gifts, we will share a story at the end of our note but before that please bear with us for some IFIP society gossip:
No responses were expected to our last message http://www.ifip.or.at/mail/msg00160.html "Missed the Delivery Co.?" so John Impagliazzo's comment that "Life would not be the same without your wonderful jokes" is greatly appreciated! John is the Chair WG 9.7 on History of Computing.
Another person who said that he would miss our stories is the outgoing Indian GA representative, Dr. R. Srinivasan who wrote:
"...my term as the GA representative of CSI has come to an end as of July 1st. Dr. C. R. Muthukrishnan, the Immediate Past President of CSI takes over from me. I am sure that Dr. CRM (that is how we address him), is well known to you and IFIP. He is an internationally known person, an excellent teacher, a good guide to students and one of the best educationalists in our country... I would like to take this opportunity to convey my sincere thanks to you and your colleagues in your office for the great support and help rendered to me during my tenure. I have done my best to have as much of association of CSI with IFIP as possible. I will be missing all your jokes!! Wishing you the very best, Regards, R. Srinivasan"
We welcome CRM to the IFIP community and now we have soothing news for R.S. - We will make sure you keep receiving our stories!
Prof. Rita de Caluwe also stepped down as Belgian GA representative to IFIP. Rita as a key participant in many of our initiatives is a special person to the Delivery Co. . Rita is an IFIP Silver Core holder and will continue receiving IFIP news. The new Belgian GA representative is still not appointed but we are aware that Prof. Dirk Deschoolmeester, President of our Belgian member society, will be in Montreal for the Congress and the GA.
Mikko Ruohonen [FI], Chairman of IFIP WG 3.4 and Winner of our World Cup forecast competition wrote to thank for the mail. He said: "Actually I am not really the player in our family, it is my 7 years old son. He is a Ronaldo fan and I must practice almost every day with him :-). However, I like Brazil's style, hope this will help their economic problems, too."
And finally, in June we wrote to you that ICSU and IFIP have agreed to join efforts for a Science and Technology session as part of WSIS PrepCom1 on 2 July. Here is the Rapporteur' summary (with respect to the organizers) for the PrepCom1 records: "This session is co-organised by: the International Council for Science (ICSU), whose membership includes national science academies form across the world and international science unions; CoData, which is a specialized body affiliated to ICSU dealing with scientific data issues; and the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), whose membership includes national computer societies from across the world. This partnership is, at least in part, representative of the international public sector science and technology (S&T) community both developed and developing world - and our interests in the information society range from access to genetic data and meteorological records through to electronic publishing and communication. The S&T community also has a crucial role to play in both the development of ICTs and in researching the economic and social effects of ICT development. Hence we would argue that much of what we do actually underpins the development of the information society per se."
Have a great weekend,
The Delivery Co.
P.S. Fun Zone - Joke lovers only!
Gifts ****** Three sons left home, went out on their own, and prospered. When they got back together several years later, they discussed gifts they were able to give to their elderly mother.
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother."
The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "Ha, I got you both beat! Remember how mother loved to read the Bible? And you know that she can't see very well? Well, I sent her an amazing parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took Church elders 14 years to teach him. Mom just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it."
Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Adam," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so big. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Jon," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay at home most of the time, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"
"Dearest Gerald," she wrote to her third son, "You have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious..."
