Dear Otto, Thank you very much for this information. It will be very useful for the conferences organised in developing countries. This point, in Toulouse during the GA, remain in the dark space, even that several question appear to know these aspects, but Jennifer Evans (Yana Lambert was sick) skipped to answer. Best regards Ramon
Dear all (+ Wojtek Cellary, organisor of I3E),
I just phoned Alfred Hofmann from Springer (for I3E and for another non-IFIP event) and got the following maybe important information:
There are two possibilities for IFIP publications:
- "old style KAP" (Kluwer Academic Publisher)
- Springer LNCS.
Apparently there is heavy competition between those two possibilities inside the newly merged Kluwer-Springer.
It is strongly recommended by Alfred Hofmann to use LNCS instead as of old-style KAP.
The reasons:
- LNCS is much cheaper (in the bookstore) than old-style KAP, just 35 percent of old-style KAP; it is soft-cover instad as of hard-cover but for only a third of the price this appears to be more than tolerable.
- LNCS is included in digital library, old-style KAP is not.
- The organisor doesn't have to make a certain bulk size at his own risk, he can order as many copies as he wants.
- The organisor gets 50 copies for free, thus for some small workshops he will not have to pay a single cent for the proceedings; the Springer revenue out of LNCS comes from the much higher sales numbers due to the much cheaper price. Thus Springer can afford to give 50 copies for free.
- As an example, Alfred told me that INTERACT took 450 books with 850 pages each. The cost with old-style KAP would have been 63.000 EURO (or maybe dollar, I don't remember perfectly) but with LNCS it was not more than 19.000 EURO (or dollar).
Thus LNCS publication is very strongly recommended. The only condition is that a very thorough and strong reviewing will be effected. I urge all of our WG chairs that they invite many organisors to seriously check the LNCS possibility. Alfred told me that some other TC's have already taken this as the standard way for publishing IFIP event proceedings.
Alfred's phone number is in the list of IFIP delegates: +49-6221-4878599 Hofmann@Springer.de
Yana Lambert (from old-style KAP) will not be delighted to see that comparison but she will have to live with it.
Best regards Otto
