========================================================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
International Workshop on Improved Mobile User Experience (IMUx 2007)
http://www.hiit.fi/imux
In conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Pervasive
Computing (Pervasive 2007)
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
May 13, 2007
========================================================================
Current interfaces of mobile devices are rather limited when
adaptability, context-awareness and proactiveness are considered. For
example, they do not utilize the context of the interaction, nor the
environmental changes in the user's proximity or the capabilities of the
device. This context can include information about the situation and the
user preferences, longer or shorter time usage histories, etc. To
improve usability and to provide a better user experience, the
interfaces of the devices should become more intelligent and require
less intentional user inputs.
In order to achieve this goal, novel interaction methods need to be
developed and combined with statistical models of the user that capture,
for example, her behavior, personal preferences and goals. Furthermore,
the developed solutions need to be evaluated via extensive user tests to
guarantee they are valuable to the users. To improve the dialogue
between the different research topics and their practitioners, the
workshop aims at bringing together researchers from the fields of user
modeling, user interaction and user experience, with developers of
mobile and ubiquitous applications. The ultimate goal of the workshop is
to provide a common forum for exchanging ideas between these domains.
Submissions to the workshop should combine at least two of the following
aspects:
- User modeling
- User interaction
- User experience
Example topics include, but are not limited to,
- adaptive context-aware user interfaces
- adaptive mobile computing applications
- considerate computing
- context-aware information retrieval
- embedded solutions for machine learning
- large scale data gathering and its challenges
- large scale user studies
- minimal/implicit/reduced user interaction
MANUSCRIPT FORMAT
The workshop welcomes scientific papers, demonstrations and videos. The
manuscripts should be prepared according to the Springer Lecture Notes
in Computer Science guidelines
(http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0).
The maximum length of submissions is 10 pages for research papers and 6
pages for videos and demonstrations.
We plan to publish the proceedings of the workshop as a post-proceedings.

We are faced with an era where the widespread use of small portable
wireless devices and wireless technologies are building the pervasive
vision. This pervaded world has generated new communication paradigms:
autonomic and opportunistic communications.
Communication among devices in a pervasive environment can happen if
the devices can communicate autonomously, and manage their own evolution
and configuration changes in the network, without explicit user or
administrator action. In a pervasive world, even in the absence of any
connectivity infrastructure mobile devices can communicate using the
connection "opportunities" that arise due to mobility.
The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum between the autonomic
and opportunistic communication communities to exchange ideas, discuss
solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and
application developers both from industry and academia. Original papers
addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic
communications and computing are solicited. Papers describing prototype
implementations and deployment are particularly welcome.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Architecture and models for autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building autonomic
and opportunistic networks
* Adaptive security for self protection of networks
* Economic, biological and social models used for autonomic and
opportunistic communications
* Mobility models for opportunistic networking
* Novel management techniques for autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Sensing, monitoring and measurements for self-managing networks
* Advanced technologies for enabling autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Autonomic and opportunistic communication testbeds and measurements

| PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS |
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
The IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems: Operations and
Management (DSOM) is the premier annual workshop in the general area of
network and services management. It has built up its strong reputation over
a period of almost two decades. The workshop is sponsored by the
International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6
on Management of Networks and Distributed Systems, with technical co-
sponsorship by the IEEE Communications Society, Technical Committee on
Network Operations and Management (CNOM). In its 18th edition, DSOM 2007
will be held October 29-31, 2007 in Silicon Valley, California, as part of
the 3rd International Week on Management of Networks and Services (Manweek
2007).
THEME AND TOPICS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The primary theme of DSOM 2007 will be "Managing Virtualization of Networks
and Services." Virtualization, in which properties of a service are
decoupled from its physical realization over networking and IT
infrastructure, is capturing the imagination of the industry and the
research community alike. The goal of DSOM 2007 is to shed light on related
research issues, investigating questions such as: what is different about
virtualization in 2007 compared to the mainframe era, what advances in
network control and self-management may advance virtualization, what new
problems we will incur when managing virtualized networks and services, and
how management itself may benefit from virtualization. Submissions on topics
related to managing virtualization of networks and services are hence
particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Virtualization of networks and services
- Management implications of virtualization
- Managing security in a virtual environment
- Self-management and virtualization
- Troubleshooting virtualized networks and services
- Performance and QoS management in virtualized environments
- Management patterns and algorithms for scalable management
- Controlling the tradeoffs between overhead, accuracy,
robustness, and security
- Distributed, decentralized, and peer-to-peer management
- Management of next generation service networks
- Monitoring and measurements
- Anomaly detection and data mining for management
- Fault management and event correlation
- Management and operations of massively redundant data centers
- Semantic Web techniques for management
- Instrumentation and embedded management
- Implementation, deployment, and operations experiences
PAPER SUBMISSION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is planned to publish DSOM 2007 proceedings in Springer-Verlag's Lecture
Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. Paper submissions must present
original, unpublished research or experiences. Late-breaking advances and
work-in-progress reports from ongoing research are also encouraged. Papers
under review elsewhere MUST NOT be submitted to DSOM 2007. Authors are
requested to submit either long or short papers, strictly in LNCS format:
- Long papers (up to 12 single-spaced single-column pages)
- Short papers describing work-in-progress (up to 4 pages)
Submissions exceeding the above mentioned page limits will not be reviewed.
Papers must be submitted electronically through the JEMS conference
management system at https://jems.sbc.org.br/dsom2007 (only PDF files are
permitted).

> *THEME OF THE WORKSHOP*
>
> As software increases in size and becomes more complex and costly, the
> need for techniques to ease software development is likewise increasing.
> Over the last decade, pattern community has evolved and received more
> interest in both academia and industry. Developing software using patterns
> holds the promise to reduce the cost and condensing the time of developing
> software systems, while simultaneously maintaining the quality of these
> systems.
>
> However, the potential of using patterns in developing systems is not
> fully realized and we need to address many challenges. For example,
> developing pattern repositories and catalogs, from which patterns can be
> retrieved and reused, still forms a challenge to software engineering,
> knowledge engineering and information systems communities. In addition, the
> need for (semi-) automated approaches for patterns mining and integration
> poses several open research questions to the software engineering community.
> Many think these challenges and others preclude the realization of the
> benefit of patterns as a reuse approach. This workshop aims at bringing
> together researchers and practitioners who are interested in resolving
> research challenges or who have practical experience with the different
> issues of patterns reuse and integration to discuss and advance the
> state-of-the-art and the state-of-the-practice in patterns reuse.
>
> Patterns have emerged as a promising reuse technique for both improving
> the quality and reducing the cost and time of software development. However,
> there is an immense belief that patterns have not fulfilled the expectations
> software developers wanted. Nevertheless, this belief does not rebuff the
> fact that patterns, as a concept, have the potential to play a key role in
> developing systems in the near future. This near future will never come
> unless there are serious attempts from both developers and researchers to
> investigate and provide creative solutions to current challenges that hinder
> utilizing patterns in practice. Among these challenges, this workshop
> focuses on investigating how to develop systems using patterns. We are sure
> that this topic will attract many developers and researchers in the field to
> participate in this workshop.

> *PROPOSED AGENDA*
>
>
>
> 1. Welcome and introduction of participants. The organizers will first
> give a short overview of any open issues and of the main arguments arising
> out of the position papers. (Estimated time: 20-30 minutes)
>
> 2. Selected authors (representing the main trends) will be given 20
> minutes to explain how their position relates to other positions and what
> each sees as the three major issues. We expect about 5-10 position papers.
> (Estimated time: 120-130 minutes)
>
> 3. The organizers will propose an identification of the major issues, and
> the participants will then discuss and select what they think are the
> hottest issues to be examined. (Estimated time: 10-15 minutes)
>
> 4. The participants will work for 70-95 minutes in small groups, with a
> designated moderator in each group. The groups will each deal with two
> different hot issues identified and will produce a summary in the form of
> points and counterpoints, showing either how several views are irreducibly
> opposed or how they are complementary.
>
> The number of groups will depend on the number of participants and number
> of issues selected; ideally there should be 3-5 p people in each group.
> (Estimated time: 60-70 minutes)
>
> 5. Each group will be given 10-15 minutes to present its findings to the
> workshop. A closing discussion will follow. The workshop report will be
> written on the basis of these findings and will include an agenda for future
> exploration and cooperation; it will be made available through the WWW and
> FTP. (Estimated time: 50-60 minutes for five teams)
>
> (Total estimated time: 285-315 minutes, i.e. about five hours +/- 15
> minutes; lunch and breaks are not included.)
