Hi, all.
I've got one that doesn't seem to be in the FAQ...
(http://www.hardlink.com/Support/Smartlist/)
I was trying to set up a list that was going to be maintained by
myself and another, novice user. In rc.custom, I put the following:
maintainer = salsbury(a)sculptors.com
maintainer = otheruser(a)their.domain
When I was trying to use the 'doxcommand' script (customized for this
list and password, using my name as maintainer) it didn't seem to want to mail
me the dist file. However, when I went in and commented out the second entry,
it sent the file without complaint.
On the topic of complaint, during the first two times (run from two
different machines, to make sure it wasn't freaking out based on where the
mail was coming from), I saw the following error messages. It appears to think
that it processed the request, but I never got a copy. Here's an excerpt from
the list's "log" file:
procmail: Extraneous deliver-head flag ignored
- From salsbury(a)bucky.sculptors.com Mon Oct 22 02:20:14 2001
Subject: X-Processed: showdist of <newlist-request(a)sculptors.com>
Folder: formail -R"From X-Envelope-From:" -iDate: -iReturn-Receipt-T 730
procmail: Extraneous deliver-head flag ignored
- From salsbury(a)bootstrap.sculptors.com Mon Oct 22 02:26:57 2001
Subject: X-Processed: showdist of <newlist-request(a)sculptors.com>
Folder: formail -R"From X-Envelope-From:" -iDate: -iReturn-Receipt-T 983
When I commented the second 'maintainer=' line out, the file *did*
deliver to me, yet I saw the same message in the log.
procmail: Extraneous deliver-head flag ignored
- From salsbury(a)bootstrap.sculptors.com Mon Oct 22 02:28:06 2001
Subject: X-Processed: showdist of <newlist-request(a)sculptors.com>
Folder: formail -R"From X-Envelope-From:" -iDate: -iReturn-Receipt-T 3671
So I guess the bonus question is: What's that error message mean?
Should I be concerned? (Note also the seeming discrepancy between the file
sizes. The third one is much closer to the size of the 'dist' file.)
Thirdly, in looking at /var/log/maillog, I've discovered that those
first two attempts seem to have, in actuality, delivered *something*, but they
delivered it to the other (2nd) maintainer! Only when I commented that line
out did I get a message, so it appears to go with the last "maintainer=" line.
In light of that, I guess the answer to my question of:
"Does SmartList support multiple 'maintainer=' lines?" is a simple "No." But
the next question is: "Why not? And is there any way to get it to do this?
Thanks for your attention and any insight you may have...

Hello,
Anyone know how to control the order by with Smartlist sends the emails
contained within its announcement list?
At the moment, my announcement list seems to send alphabetically, by domain.
E.g First it sends address(a)domain.ac then address(a)domain.co.* etc
I would like to personally received mail first and last; thus I'd know when
the server began sending mail and when it completed sending to the list.
TIA
Howard

What is wrong with the posting quoted below is that, instead of being
informative, it refers us to the FAQ, which is equally uninformative.
The FAQ mentions (au-passant) that one can deal with the problem
by use of rc.local files, but gives no hint about how to do this.
There is no list anywhere, as far as I (and apparently others) have
been able to discover, of the various available rc.local files, what
they do, and at what point in the process they act. Just as unfortunate,
there is no central archive (or if there is, it is well hidden)
from which one can obtain these files. In a word, the level of user-
friendliness is very close to zero.
Third-party hosting services offering SmartList feel no obligation
to make these scripts available to users. Mine, for example does
not.
Perhaps you would post to the SmartList list, for the benefit of
your users, a pointer to a list of scripts, with their descriptions;
that would make them useful to a far wider group than they are now.
Since the scripts are apparently all rather small files, perhaps
you could even find a few kilobytes somewhere to post them for FTP
download. Would that be difficult?

I am utilizing SmartList provided by my hosting service (I have no access to
change program settings other than add, delete, newsletter, moderated, etc.).
My list is set as a newsletter with the intent that subscribers sign up and
we send them a newsletter once a month. We should be the only ones able to
send messages to the "list."
I used SmartList for the first time on 9/18 (when the Nimda virus hit) and
although I had done an updated virus scan on my system prior to sending the
newsletter to the list, the Snow White virus somehow attached to hundreds of
the mailings (thousands went out okay though) and ended up bouncing our
newsletter all over the place, often reappearing in people's boxes 20 or 30
times. When the infected recipients "replied" to the newsletter, the mails
were then sent to various and sundry e-mail addresses, but generally not to
the e-mail address of the list.
I now have to do a new mailing and am scared to death to repeat the same
performance. Anyone have any words of wisdom for me?
Dear all,
I operate a number of mailinglists that are open for posting to
anyone. Unfortunately, this openness is being abused by spammers that
send out a lot of spam to the lists. As is common with most spam, they
send to fake or non existing addresses with the real recipient address
only being given in BCC headers.
How do I put up such a filter that only mail for a given domain is
accepted for the list?
Right now I have a rc.local.s10 like this:
:0
* !(To|Cc):.*starchat.net
! spameater(a)webconquest.com
SUBJ=`formail -zx Subject:`
:0fw
* ! ^Subject:.*\[routing]\]
* ! ^Subject:.Re: *
| formail -I "Subject: [routing] $SUBJ"
But that doesn't seem to do the trick.
Any insights?
