Dear Prof. Augusto Casaca
IST2003 Technical Committee Member
I would like to thank you once again for your favorable response to our
invitation to join the IST2003 Symposium as a member of the Technical
Program Committee.
The premier event, IST2001, enjoyed a high profile stature and owes its
success much to the collective effort and dedication of its TPC Members. As
such, I would like to request each of our esteem Members to actively
publicize the event among potential contributors in their immediate academic
or research environment and encourage them to contribute original papers in
their areas of expertise.
Please refer to the IST2003 website at its official address
www.itrc.ac.ir/ist2003 and the First Call for Papers (attached). You are
requested to visit the website regularly to observe updates. Also, we are
sending by post a number of the IST2003 printed brochure for distribution
among potential contributors.
I would be glad to receive your comments and advise. Look forward to hearing
from you and hopefully meeting you in Isfahan next year.
Best regards,
Mohammad Kamarei

Subject: [IFIP] TC 6 - A Sailboat in the Wind (contd.)
Dear All,
Our report on the 30th Anniversary of TC 6 in Lisbon -
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/tc6.pdf - continues to be a topic of
interest within the IFIP Community. People write, people call, people visit
and tell us they enjoyed it a lot.
We received the following messages from two past Presidents and thought you
might appreciate to read what they say:

I enjoyed reading of the TC6 activities in Portugal.
I remember Luis Penedo very well. During his time as Portuguese
representative we became friends and I liked him very much. Through that
friendship Luis and the then Portuguese Computer Society invited me to
Lisbon in April 1985 and I delivered a paper on "Man and Computer", This
was after the IFIP Council meeting in Munich at which we celebrated IFIP's
25 Anniversary in a one -day symposium. All the then seven IFIP Presidents
were at those celebrations.
Getting back to Luis, he invited me to his home and he and his wife took me
to dinner at a delightful Portuguese restaurant, where the seafood were kept
live in pens and I still have the wooden gavel I souvenired which was
provided to crack the shells.
Luis was a great fan and exponent of fado and was expert at the Portuguese
guitar. I was fortunate to have him play it for me.The following evening I
was able to repay his hospitality and I took him and his wife to a lovely
restaurant in Lisbon and for the first and only time in my life saw a
bottle of red wine opened using a piece of heated wire and snapping the top
off the bottle.
The following year (1986) we held the March Council meeting in Lisbon. I'm
delighted to hear of Luis' activity in retirement doing something he loves.
I wish I'd been there

Your message of October 17 -- focused on TC-6 -- was in my e-mail box when
I returned from a memorial service that day. The service, beautifully done,
was for Keith W. Uncapher, who is listed in the TC-6 report as interim
Chairman during 1974 - 1975.
One of the speakers at the service was Vint Cerf, well known - indeed,
famous - in the Internet pioneering world. Vint and I had not spoken before
the service, so I was pleased and surprised when he discussed the TC-6
communication demonstrations in South Africa and Brazil.
He spoke anecdotally of the problems they encountered, ranging from working
with a communication connection consisting of three wires emerging from the
floor, to the difficulties of finding electronic parts locally to rig up
some kind of working network.
While there were several participants who made it possible, Cerf mentioned
specifically that Keith Uncapher drove the event, never faltering in his
optimism that, both times, eventually led to a successful outcome. I'm not
sure, but I don't think Vint Cerf was a member of TC-6. He went to South
Africa and to Brazil because the concept intrigued him, but, equally so,
because Keith was involved. Cerf was not the only one who made the event
successful, of course, but perhaps his role is illustrative of Keith's
ability to attract technologists who otherwise might not have been involved
with IFIP.
I was pleased to note that the TC-6 report speaks of the "past President"
who mentioned the TC-6 events of South Africa and Brazil, and I am glad
that I decided to include those events in my report to IFIP.
There will be another memorial service in November, at the University of
Southern California, where Keith was instrumental in founding and initially
directing what is known as the USC Information Sciences Institute, now a
300-person organization still actively engaged in communication technology.
The University wanted to organize its own tribute to Keith's contributions.
I plan to speak on his role in AFIPS and his support of IFIP's TC-6
activities.
Keith was a friend, a dear friend. We miss him.

Subject: [IFIP] STAR News knocking
Dear All,
In February 2002, we wrote: "A STAR Newsletter is born! The IT STAR
initiative is destined to expand and this Newsletter will herald its
achievements."
The first issue generated a lot of interest. We expected it as the region
has a great IT potential and there are many national and international
players on this turf. The BIG issue, however, was whether this excellent
initiative could be sustained in the longer term.
Some might have feared that the rising STAR would soon become a falling
STAR. Not so! The initiative continues to thrive and we are pleased to
announce the second issue of the IT STAR Newsletter. It contains a review
on ICT in the Czech Republic and fresh news from IT STAR countries. You
will also read our FIRST ad as proof of value of the visibility our
Newsletter provides.
The rest is within your choice! You could click here
---> http://www.ifip.or.at/it-star/NL2.pdf to download and be an expert on
the latest ICT developments in Central-East Europe!
And remember, Tony Blair recently said in Blackpool that the euro is UK's
destiny. Did he read our Feb. '02 message? Probably not as he would have
added that it's all about STARdom!
Greetings, Pozdravi, Gruesse, Saluti and kesenem,
The Delivery Co.
