The project spins a tale of major IFIP accomplishments and offers visions for the future. 3. ***17th World Computer Congress 2002 in Montreal*** http://www.wcc2002.org - A flagship event which kept nearly all of IFIP's TCs involved in the program. 4. ***The IFIP-UNESCO Partnership*** On the basis of an evaluation IFIP was recognized as an "essential partner" and the formal consultative relations between the two organizations were renewed for another 6 years. The UNESCO-IFIP WCC 2002 Declaration of ICT and Youth, now available in English, French and Spanish - http://www.ifip.or.at/minutes/ga2002/youth_declaration.pdf - is an important contribution to WSIS. UNESCO provided its auspices to WITFOR. The two organizations worked closely for a mutually beneficial partnership. 5. ***Establishment of a Specialist Group (SG) on Entertainment Computing*** http://www.ifip.or.at/minutes/ga2002/sg_ec.pdf -- For more than a decade IFIP has hesitated to establish a SG with the potential to grow into a Technical Committee. This newly established SG is promising and provides a forum for an active involvement of Industry in IFIP. 6. ***IT STAR*** http://www.ifip.or.at/it-star - This regional initiative helped recruit a new IFIP member society and has the potential to attract at least 2 more IFIP members in 2003. It launched an IT STAR Newsletter, published national reports on ICT in the region and is working on a project for an IT Pool of Experts which could have a spin-off effect to other world regions for the benefit of other IFIP member societies. 7. ***SEC III Conference in Dortmund, DE*** http://seciii.cs.uni-dortmund.de/index_html -- this World Conference on "Social, Ethical and Cognitive Issues of Informatics and ICT" held on 22-26 July 2002, was a major event in the TC 3 program of activities. Our apologies if you have received multiple copies of this CFP =============================================== PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS The First ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems SenSys 2003 http://www.cens.ucla.edu/sensys03 November 5-7, 2003, Los Angeles, California, USA Sponsored by: ACM (Sigcomm, Sigmobile, Sigarch, Sigmetrics, Sigops), and NSF SenSys 2003 introduces a high caliber forum for research on systems issues in the emerging area of embedded, networked sensors. These distributed systems of numerous smart sensors and actuators connecting computational capabilities to the physical world have the potential to revolutionize a wide array of application areas by providing an unprecedented density and fidelity of instrumentation. They also present a host of novel systems challenges because of resource constraints, uncertainty, irregularity, and scale. SenSys design issues cut across multiple fields, including wireless communication, networking, operating systems, architecture, low-power circuits, distributed algorithms, data processing, scheduling, sensors, energy harvesting, and signal processing, so a holistic approach is required. SenSys seeks to provide a cross-disciplinary venue for researchers addressing the rich space of networked sensor system design issues to interact and exchange recent results. It is the first of a planned series of annual meetings with a highly selective, single-track technical program and a hands-on research exhibition. This inaugural 2003 conference shall take place in Los Angeles, CA. PAPERS: Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research are solicited. In general this conference is interested in papers that address system issues in embedded networked systems. Specific topics of interest include the following: * Network protocols for sensor networks * Operating system and middleware for sensor networks * Distributed database processing in sensor networks * Distributed algorithms for sensor networks * Novel sensor node hardware and software platforms * Sensor network planning and deployment * Energy management in sensor networks * Adaptive topology management * In-network processing and aggregation * Data storage in sensor networks * Distributed and collaborative signal processing * Distributed Actuation, Control, and Coordination * Localization in time and space * Distributed calibration in sensor networks * Simulation and optimization tools * Applications of distributed sensor networks * Security and Robustness in sensor networks Please consult the program chairs at sensys03-pcchairs(a)cens.ucla.edu if you are uncertain whether your paper is in the scope of the conference. PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS All submissions will be handled electronically and must be in PDF or PostScript format. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. We will adopt a double-blind process for paper review, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. The meeting was opened by Director General Matsuura. The President of the UN WSIS PrepCom, Adama Samassekou [Mali], was also there to discuss matters related to the WSIS organization and the civil society input. The IFIP Executive Director briefed Messrs. Matsuura and Samassekou on preparations of IFIP's World IT FORUM [ ref. http://www.witfor.org]. As co-chair of WITFOR Commission 4 on "Empowerment and Participation", Mr. Nedkov met with the other co-chair, Mrs. Monique Fouilhoux, President of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, and with representatives of UNESCO and ICSU for a strategy session related to WITFOR preparations. Dear all, the IFIP executive director, Plamen Nedkov, has initiated a campaign " Bye, bye 2002, welcome 2003" which includes a selection of the "IFIP Event of the Year". Please find enclosed his message below. Now my cautious recommendation would be that you might be inclined to nominate Nr. 25 "Congratulations to TC6 Nr. 19 "TC6 - A Sailboat in the Wind" Nr. 16 "TC6 - A Sailboat in the Wind (continued)" all of which have to do with our 30 years anniversary in Lisbon. I recommend that we vote for that event as the "IFIP event of the year". Five years ago in Bratislava we had an interesting discussion on Artificial Intelligence with Bernd's predecessor, Luigia Carlucci-Aiello, a formidable lady and a good friend of the Delivery Co. We remember the discussion ended on a lighter note that Artificial Intelligence was like a blonde wearing a dark wig. Luigia laughed a lot, herself being dark haired. Now it's Bernd's time to tell a much larger audience about the IFIP developments in Artificial Intelligence during the last 5 years. He is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science of Hamburg University and Head of the Research Group on Cognitive Systems. In 1988, he founded the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Hamburg which offers application oriented R&D in cooperation with industry. His main research area is Artificial Intelligence, with special interests in Computer Vision, Foundations of Knowledge-Based Systems, and applications in Diagnosis and Configuration. Bernd's motto - taken from the German version of Gyro Gearloose - is "Dem Ingeniör ist nichts zu schwör" [Nothing is too difficult for the engineer]. Bernd plays violin in regular string quartet sessions. He is President of a boys choir and organizes concert trips abroad. He likes travelling and believes that travelling is one of the vital assets for his IFIP involvement. If weather and other conditions permit, he flies with his little airplane, a Piper Cherokee, but complains that he has very little time left for his hobbies. Such teams would be available to national governments and to the UN system, the EU and not-for-profit organizations in executing international and national projects and other short term activities. The proposal was accepted and the specific elements, including database specifications, certification criteria, coordination, legal and financial issues, would be prepared and considered in 2003. The next regular IT STAR meeting is scheduled for the first week of June 2003 in Opatija, Croatia. IFIP's members from Bulgaria and Greece have expressed their interest to join. The computer societies of Yugoslavia and Macedonia, currently not members of IFIP, would also be invited.
