Subject: [IFIP] Visions from the IT Engine Room
Dear All,
During GA 2002 in Montreal we said that a new Delivery Co. project will
follow "The Day of the President"
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/pres_comb.pdf
Now we proudly announce the NEXT blockbuster series as project "Visions
from the IT Engine Room". This project takes our series of interviews to
the "IFIP Engine Room", to borrow a term from a past president, with the
intention to contribute to a more profound understanding of IFIP's TCs,
their major activities, challenges and successes and their visions for the
future.
The current IFIP TC Chairs are in the hot seat to give their opinion and
visions by answering 3 questions from the Delivery Co. concerning
significant developments and activities of their TCs, activities with
significant societal/economic impact and technical issues they find
important for IFIP to address. The individual interviews will be posted at
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/tcvisions.htm and the full collection
will be published by the Delivery Co. when the project is completed.
We kick-off the series with our interview with Professor GIORGIO AUSIELLO
[IT], TC 1 Chair (1996 - 2002) which is posted at
http://www.ifip.or.at/secretariat/tcvisions.htm
Giorgio is currently in the middle of an e-ballot to choose a successor and
we are grateful he found the time to respond.
Enjoy,
The Delivery Co.

Re: IEEE CS International Design Competition (CSIDC 2003)
Dear All,
CSIDC 2003 will be our fourth annual competition for university students
in computer science, computer engineering and related fields. Teams must
design, build, test, and document a working system based on a PC, laptop,
or hand-held computing device to solve a real-world problem. After six
months of intense work,
participants then must submit reports documenting the design and
implementation of their prototype.
Professor Alan Clements, the Chair CSIDC-- alanclements(a)ntlworld.com --
writes that the theme for this year's competition is "Added Value".
Essentially, teams are free to take a PC or similar device and turn it into
a socially useful application using no more than $400 US in additional
components. This project gives teams an immense range of things that they
can do.
Since this competition could be of interest to IFIP's member societies we
are pleased to advise that detailed information about CSIDC 2003, including
a Call for participation, is available at the CSIDC website at
http://www.computer.org/csidc
Good wishes,

Up to now I have received reports from Working Groups 6.1, 6.3, 6.4, 6.6 and
6.8. May I kindly ask the remaining chairpersons to send me the reports as
soon as possible to include them in the meeting documents?

Subject: [IFIP] The Day After: Germany's Choice
23 September, Laxenburg -- Last evening Ralitsa Vassileva, the CNN anchor
in Atlanta, kept millions of viewers in suspense with the CNN reporting on
the closest post-war German elections. For most of the evening the SPD and
the CDU/CSU were neck and neck. After a tight campaign race during which
Gerhard Schroeder initially was thought to be the underdog, the "rot-gruen"
coalition triumphed and will run Germany for another term. Unfortunately,
during yesterday's climax there was absolutely no mention of the German
political elite's attitude towards IFIP [ something that has to be amended
in future by the current IFIP President] and early this morning the
Delivery Co. had to carry out its own investigation.
Here is a SNAPSHOT of the German engagement in IFIP:
Germany was a founding member of IFIP. Since the establishment of IFIP in
1960 Germany was represented by : Walther (1960-1964) -> Bauer* (1964-1971)
-> Samelson (1972-1975) -> Piloty (1976-1984) -> Brauer (1985-1998) ->
Brunnstein (1999 -)
DDR was represented by Lehman (1970-1987) -> Kempe (1997 until merger of
German representation).
*Prof. Bauer was responsible for the preparations of the 25th IFIP
Anniversary Symposium in March 1985 in Munich .
German Vice- Presidents were Walther (1960 -1962), Lehmann [DDR]
(1980-1983), Piloty (1980-1984), Brauer (1995-1998), Brunnstein
(2001-2002). On 2 September 2002 Klaus Brunnstein was elected as IFIP
President for the period 2002 - 2004.
We are impressed by the leadership Germany has provided and continues to
provide to IFIP's Technical Committees. The following individuals served as
IFIP TC Chairs:
TC 2 - Manfred Paul (1976-1984)
TC 3 - Wilfried Brauer (1984-1990)
TC 6 - Otto Spaniol (1992-1997)
TC 7 - Joseph Stoer (1979-1984)
TC 9 - Klaus Brunnstein (1989-1995)
TC 10 - Robert Piloty (1976-1981), Egon Hoerbst (1993-1995), Franz Rammig
(2002 - )
TC 12 - Bernd Neumann (1997- )
Two IFIP World Computer Congresses were held in Germany - the 2nd Congress
in 1962 in Munich and the14th Congress in Hamburg in 1994.
After we gathered this data, we paid a visit to the Hall of Fame of the
German Informatics Society at
http://www.gi-ev.de/verein/hall_fame/hall_of_fame.shtml and were pleased
to note that the majority of "Hall of Famers" are indeed people who helped
build IFIP. These are:
*** Friedrich L. Bauer GA representative from 1964 to 1971
*** Wilfried Brauer - 5th IFIP Auerbach recipient in 2002
*** Jose Encarnacao - ex WG 5.10 Vice-Chair & TC 5 member
*** Gunter Hotz - TC 1 member
*** Nikolaus J. Lehmann - DDR GA representative from 1970 to 1987,
Vice-President from 1980 to 1983
*** Robert Piloty - GA representative from 1975 to '80, TC 10 Chair
1976-1981
Finally, the Delivery Co. checked its fans and supporters list and was very
pleased to find that there are excellent jokes coming from Germany. Here is
one joke shared by one of the German representatives referred to above who
gave us 10 GOOD REASONS FOR BEING GERMAN :
1

Hmmmmm - He was requested to be more constructive and was given a second
chance :-)

7 On a highway you can travel at a speed that would bring you to jail
in any other country of the world
8 You do not have to learn German as a foreign language
9 You think Sauerkraut is delicious
10 Contrary to common belief laughing is not forbidden by law (yet)
Good wishes to our German friends and neighbors,
The Delivery Co:-))
