Liebe Studierende,
das Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE) erstellt alle 2-3 Jahre ein Ranking der besten Informatik-Studiengänge in Deutschland. Es gilt als das wichtigste Ranking, das sowohl die Studiengänge nach Studierbarkeit als auch ihre Standorte nach Kompetenzen in der Wissenschaft bewertet. Die RWTH wurde im CHE-Ranking bislang immer unter den besten Studienorten für Informatik eingestuft.
Im Rahmen des CHE-Rankings werdet auch Ihr - so wie auch nach jeder unserer Lehrveranstaltungen - nach Eurer Meinung zum Studieren in der Aachener Informatik befragt.
Wir möchten Euch hiermit aufrufen, an dieser Befragung teilzunehmen. Bitte gebt bei der CHE-Umfrage den Eindruck ab, den Ihr von eurem Studiengang und -ort habt.
Leider haben wir nach den letzten Befragungen festgestellt, dass viele von Euch die Gesamtheit unserer Angebote nicht kennen, oder die stetigen Bemühungen, mit denen wir (die Mitarbeiter/innen und Professoren/innen der Informatik) versuchen, den Studiengang, den Studienort und die Studierbarkeit kontinuierlich zu verbessern.
Deshalb möchten wir Euch gerne zu einem Townhall Meeting der Informatik einladen, um uns Euren Fragen und Meinungen zu stellen und Euch Informationen zu geben, die in keiner Lehrveranstaltung weitergegeben werden.
Was könnte das sein?
z.B. den Start in das Studium erleichtern: durch Einführung von Vorkursen, Erstiwoche, Townhall Meeting mit Bachelor-Studienstartern/innen, Mentoring-Programm, ...
z.B. die ständige Evaluation und Verbesserung der Studierbarkeit des Studiengangs: Die häufigen Änderungen der Prüfungsordnung zeigen, dass wir regelmäßig die Arbeitslast und die Passung der Module überprüfen. Gerne erläutern wir Euch den umfangreichen Prozess dahinter und berichten Euch von unseren Planungen einer Kohortenverfolgung, um Probleme im Studienverlauf detaillierter erfassen und drauf reagieren zu können.
z.B. die Aktivitäten in Corona-Semestern: die Durchführung eines Townhall-Meetings mit den Studienbeginnern/innen noch vor Beginn des Semesters, um Unsicherheiten zur aktuellen Situation abzumildern; und den Umgang mit Lehr- und Prüfungsveranstaltungen, der einen hohen personellen Aufwand bedeutet; und dass das erste Semester unter Corona-Bedingungen eigentlich sehr gut geklappt hat.
z.B. die Internationalität des Studiengangs als wichtiges Ziel, in dem wir mit 38 anderen Hochschulen Erasmus-Austauschabkommen haben (und die RWTH mit weiteren 60 für Informatiker/innen nutzbaren Hochschulen außerhalb Europas), um 1-2 Austauschsemester im Ausland zu ermöglichen; dass wir für eure Beratung hierfür mit Dirk Thißen einen eigenen Studienberater haben; dass wir zahlreiche internationale Professoren/innen und einen sehr hohen Anteil internationaler Studierender haben; dass der Großteil der Lehrveranstaltungen und studentischen Leistungen in englischer Sprache gehalten ist, u.v.m.
z.B. die Räumlichkeiten: dass wir uns seit vielen Jahren bemühen, das Informatikzentrum zu sanieren bzw. komplett abzureißen und neue, moderne Gebäude zu bauen. Und dass wir nun endlich große Fortschritte dabei erreicht haben. Wir können Euch erklären, welche Schritte alle dafür nötig sind und warum das so lange dauert.
z.B. die Qualität der Mensa Ahorn55: Haha, nice try. Da sind uns leider die Hände gebunden, denn beim Studierendenwerk hatten wir bislang keine Chance, etwas zu bewirken. Aber auch hier tut sich etwas. Die Mensa wird in den nächsten zwei Jahren saniert (und hoffentlich auch die Zubereitung und das Mensaangebot).
Und vieles mehr... was wir gerne mit Euch in einem Townhall Meeting diskutieren möchten, und zwar an zwei Terminen, einmal für deutschsprachige und einmal für englischsprachige Studierende.

Dear students,
the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) compiles a ranking of the best computer science degree programs in Germany every 2-3 years. It is considered to be the most important ranking, which evaluates both the study programs according to studyability and their locations according to competencies in science. The RWTH has always been ranked among the best places to study computer science in the CHE ranking.
In the context of the CHE Ranking you will be asked for your opinion about studying computer science in Aachen - just like after each of our courses.
We would like to invite you to participate in this survey. Please give the CHE survey the impression you have of your course of study and place of study.
Unfortunately, after the last surveys we have found out that many of you are not familiar with all our offers or the constant efforts we (the staff and professors of computer science) make to improve the course of studies, the place of study and the studyability continuously.
Therefore we would like to invite you to a computer science townhall meeting to ask us your questions and opinions and to give you information that is not passed on in any course.
What could that be?
e.g. make the start of your studies easier: by introducing pre-courses, first week, Townhall Meeting with new Bachelor students, mentoring program, ...
e.g. continuous evaluation and improvement of the study program's studyability: the frequent changes in examination regulations show that we regularly review the workload and the fit of the modules. We would be happy to explain the extensive process behind this and report on our plans for cohort tracking, so that problems in the course of study can be discovered in more detail and we can react to them.
e.g. the activities in Corona semesters: holding a townhall meeting with the Bachelor's program starters before the start of the semester to mitigate uncertainties about the current situation; and the handling of teaching and examination events, which requires a high level of personnel effort; and that the first semester under Corona conditions actually worked out very well.
e.g. the internationality of the program as an important goal, in which we have Erasmus exchange agreements with 38 other universities (and the RWTH with a further 60 universities outside of Europe that can be used for computer science students), in order to make 1-2 exchange semesters abroad possible; that we have our own student advisor for your consultation in this regard, Dirk Thißen; that we have numerous international professors and a very high proportion of international students; that the majority of courses and student achievements are held in English, and much more.
e.g. the premises: that we have been trying for many years to renovate or completely demolish the Computer Science Center and to construct new, modern buildings. And that we have finally achieved great progress in this respect. We can explain to you which steps are all necessary and why it takes so long.
e.g. the quality of the canteen Ahorn55: Haha, nice try. Unfortunately, our hands are tied, because we haven't had a chance to make a difference at the Studierendenwerk. But also here something happens. The cafeteria will be renovated in the next two years (and hopefully also the preparation and the cafeteria offer).
And much more... which we would like to discuss with you in a Townhall Meeting on two dates, one for German-speaking and one for English-speaking students.

For the RWTH and for computer science this ranking is an important indicator of our efforts in teaching and research.
For many prospective students, the CHE ranking (in the ZEIT-Studienführer) is an important basis for the choice of their place of study.
