AD HOC NETWORKS JOURNAL (ELSEVIER)
Special Issue on
BIO-INSPIRED COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATION IN
WIRELESS AD HOC AND SENSOR NETWORKS
*EXTENDED* Submission deadline: May 30, 2007
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
A wide spectrum of applications and services is currently being
developed and designed to be built on top of various heterogeneous
and significantly challenging network architectures such as wireless
mesh, mobile ad hoc and wireless sensor/actor networks. These
heterogeneous wireless communication architectures are mainly
characterized by heterogeneous and resource-constrained nodes,
restricted communication channels, highly dynamic environments, lack of
any fixed infrastructure, and large scale network deployments that
strongly vary in their density. These features and challenges,in turn,
mandate intelligent, adaptive, autonomic,coordinated,self-organizing,
and efficient processing and communication approaches to handle the
complexity of these ambitious wireless systems.
The turn to nature has brought us many unforeseen great concepts.
Natural biological systems intrinsically possess and exploit similar
features by providing elegant and extremely efficient solutions for
the challenges and tasks faced in their natural operation. It is of
extreme importance to bridge the communication technologies with
biological sciences and capture the analogy between these two
distinct disciplines. To this end, solution strategies inspired by
the biological systems have been recently proposed to address the
challenges of many computing and communication systems.
This special issue is dedicated to capture the state-of-the-art and
the recent advances in the area of biologically-inspired computing
and communication in heterogeneous wireless architectures such as
wireless mesh networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor
and actor networks. Papers describing mathematical models, algorithms,
protocols, tools, evaluation methods, and experimental studies of
computing and communication architectures that are inspired by and
derived from biological systems are solicited for this special issue.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Bio-inspired mathematical models, methods and tools
* Biological and bio-inspired computing, data processing algorithms
* Joint bio-inspired data processing and communication
* Embryonics-based fault-tolerant computing and communication
* Bio-inspired network and communication algorithms and protocols
* Novel applications and services inspired by biological systems
* Experimental studies of bio-inspired computing and communications
* Bio-inspired topology control and network reconfiguration methods
* Bio-inspired localization, synchronization, mobility approaches
* Evolution and self-healing of network architectures and protocols
* Immune and self-healing network defense and information security
* Bio-inspired nano-scale and molecular computing and communication
* Bio-inspired distributed control and sensing of networked wearable
and implantable medical devices

Unclassified Technical Program Submission Process:
The Web-based Abstract Management System (WAMS) (www.milcom.org) is used to submit abstracts, full papers, and final camera ready papers. During the abstract submission process, author and password information will need to be entered and a Paper ID# will be assigned. This Paper ID# and password will be used to upload papers. The abstract must NOT contain any ITAR-related, classified, or proprietary information.
Abstracts will only be used to help define the sessions. The Unclassified Author’s Kit provides instructions to authors for preparation of the full and final manuscripts and the required forms. Full papers will be reviewed for acceptance only when all appropriate forms have been completed and received.
Classified Technical Program Submission Process:
All persons wishing to attend and/or participate in the Classified Technical Program must, at a minimum, possess a current Secret personnel security clearance and be a U.S. citizen. Non-U.S. originated papers will NOT be accepted for the Classified Technical Program. All abstracts for the Classified Technical Program must be unclassified. Please submit a title and a brief unclassified abstract (up to 2000 characters) of your intended paper via email to: casto.milcom2007(a)harris.com. Each submission requires author name, affiliation, citizenship, address, phone and fax numbers, email address, and the applicable area. For papers with more than one author, indicate the point of contact. Do NOT use WAMS to submit abstracts, full papers, or the final papers for the Classified Technical Program. All papers for the Classified Technical Program must be prepared following the instructions and formatting guidelines in the Classified Author’s Kit.
Proposals for Tutorials and Panels:
MILCOM 2007 solicits proposals for unclassified half-day tutorials, and unclassified and classified panels on state-of-the art communications, networking, and interoperability technologies. The tutorial proposals should include a brief outline of the tutorial, instructor biography, and relevant instructor experience. The Unclassified Tutorials
Kit provides the applicable forms and the formatting guidelines for the tutorial material. Please forward your proposals to the MILCOM 2007 Tutorial Program Chair, Rich Folio, at folio.milcom2007(a)harris.com.
Proposals for Panels:
The proposals for panels should include a brief outline of the panel discussion topics, panel participants, and panel moderator along with their bios. A Panels Kit provides the information about the applicable forms and the guidelines for the preparation of the panel material. Please forward your proposals to the MILCOM 2007 Panels Program Chair, Leo deCardenas, at decardenas.milcom2007(a)harris.com.
Tutorials and Panels Important Dates:
Proposals Due: 16 March 2007

5th Intl. Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks
April 16-20, 2007, Limassol, Cyprus
www.wiopt.org
Last day to reserve hotel room at Workshop's low prices: March 16, 2007.
Scope of the Symposium:
The design of wireless networks offers challenges not present in fixed networks: both the offered traffic and the network capacity depend on the mobility of the nodes. The designs should not only be functioning correctly, they are also expected to optimize the performance with respect to many criteria, such as energy efficiency, quality of service, and capacity utilization. This symposium intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working on optimization of wireless network design and operations. It welcomes different perspectives, including performance analysis, protocol design, wireless communication, and optimization theory.
Conference Program: Visit the conference website www.wiopt.org for the conference program as well as travel information.
Keynote Speaker: Prof. R. Srikant, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Adjunct Workshops:
Five one-day workshops will accompany the main WiOpt Symposium. Please check the conference website for more details:
* WiNMee/WiTNeMo 2007 : International Workshop on Wireless Network Measurements
* RAWNET 2007 : Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks
* SPASWIN 2007: Spatial Stochastic Models for Wireless Networks
* CONCOM 2007 : Control over Communication Channels
* WNC3 2007 : Wireless Networks: Communication, Cooperation and Competition
