Dear all (+ Wojtek Cellary, organisor of I3E),
I just phoned Alfred Hofmann from Springer (for I3E and for another
non-IFIP event) and got the following maybe important information:
There are two possibilities for IFIP publications:
- "old style KAP" (Kluwer Academic Publisher)
- Springer LNCS.
Apparently there is heavy competition between those two possibilities
inside the newly merged Kluwer-Springer.
It is strongly recommended by Alfred Hofmann to use LNCS instead as
of old-style KAP.
The reasons:
- LNCS is much cheaper (in the bookstore) than old-style KAP,
just 35 percent of old-style KAP;
it is soft-cover instad as of hard-cover but for only a third of
the price this appears to be more than tolerable.
- LNCS is included in digital library, old-style KAP is not.
- The organisor doesn't have to make a certain bulk size at his own risk,
he can order as many copies as he wants.
- The organisor gets 50 copies for free, thus for some small workshops
he will not have to pay a single cent for the proceedings;
the Springer revenue out of LNCS comes from the much higher
sales numbers due to the much cheaper price. Thus Springer can afford
to give 50 copies for free.
- As an example, Alfred told me that INTERACT took 450 books with
850 pages each. The cost with old-style KAP would have been
63.000 EURO (or maybe dollar, I don't remember perfectly)
but with LNCS it was not more than 19.000 EURO (or dollar).
Thus LNCS publication is very strongly recommended.
The only condition is that a very thorough and strong reviewing
will be effected.
I urge all of our WG chairs that they invite many organisors
to seriously check the LNCS possibility. Alfred told me that some other
TC's have already taken this as the standard way for publishing
IFIP event proceedings.
Alfred's phone number is in the list of IFIP delegates: +49-6221-4878599
Hofmann(a)Springer.de
Yana Lambert (from old-style KAP) will not be delighted to see that
comparison but she will have to live with it.
Best regards
Otto
Dear Otto,
Thank you very much for this information. It will be very useful for the
conferences organised in developing countries. This point, in Toulouse
during the GA, remain in the dark space, even that several question appear
to know these aspects, but Jennifer Evans (Yana Lambert was sick) skipped
to answer.
Best regards
Ramon

Dear all,
please find enclosed the updated attendance list for meeting 2004/2.
Would the three delegates who didn't send any message
(i.e. delegates from Greece, Slovenia, and Syria)
please give at least one line of code concerning their presence
or - what appears to be much more likely - their non-attendance.
If I don't get at least this minimum message then I intend to ask IFIP GA for
a replacement very soon - since that form of missing activity cannot be
tolerated any longer.
Best regards
Otto

Dearr all,
our meeting 2004/2 attendance is shrinking; just 14 delegates are left
(if they all show up).
Please communicate to me your view on the IFIP/IEEE case.
Answers received thus far may be classified in two parts:
- The Americans are in favour of IEEE
(the copyright issue seems to be of no impoortance for them,
at least nbody has said a single word about that aspect)
- The Americans are more on the IFIP side.
They say e.g. "Do you think that there should be only
one organisation world-wide? There is need for more".

Dear friends,
All of you have received the message of Klaus Brunnstein, President of
IFIP. In this message I appear when he is talking about WCC.
You should know that he has asked me to chair the TPC of this event.
Personally I do not know if the effort of well organising such a
“dinosaur”, like the last one in Toulouse, is compensated by its results
both in scientific and personal exchanges aspects. However, my personal
involvement in Latin America actions obliges me to carefully consider
the proposal.
After talking with Otto Spaniol, our chairman, my position is to accept
the proposal only if I have a strong support of TC6 both by the
organisation of some events in the next WCC and by the personal
involvement of TC6 members in the TPC. Otherwise I will be obliged to
withdraw the proposal.
As this last time the electronic discussions are one of our main duties,
I would like to know your position, before or during our next meeting in
order to give me the inputs to take the correct decision.
I wish to thank you in advance your help in clarifying my ideas.
Best regards
Ramon
