I host where I have my web site uses Smartlist. I have set up a news letter for my church and need to know how I can add a list of email address to the mailing list without having to enter each address manually from the subscribe page.
Is there a way of doing this?
Thank you,

I'm sorry but actually Section 5. is not an answer to Jeff's question. I had tryied some time ago to fill DIST list editing it in my PC and it never worked. Initially I thought that it was caused by the <CR><LF> versus <LF> difference between MS-Windows and Unix, but it was't. A friend of mine finally got it done using X-commands, something that requires programing skills, and that it is non mentioned in Section 5. My friend told me that smartlist keeps a copy of DIST in memory, and that smartlist didn't update automatically changes in the DIST file unless the where performed using X-commands. I'm not a programer, so there are probably some inacuracies in my tale. On 11 Jan 2001, at 21:37, Peter Hartzler wrote:

No it doesn't. It requires you to know the difference between headers and body of an email message. This is not programming. It's not even web design.
My friend told me that smartlist keeps a copy of DIST in memory, and that smartlist didn't update automatically changes in the DIST file unless the where performed using X-commands.
He was talking rubbish, unless you've got a wildly unusual SL configuration of a sort I have never heard of. Roger

Interesting. Editing the dist file always worked for me, when I needed to do so...

How did you determine that line termination was NOT the problem? Exactly how did the system fail?
A friend of mine finally got it done using X-commands, something that requires programing skills, and that it is non mentioned in Section 5.
No programming skills required. And X-Commands are mentioned in several places in the faq and manual.
My friend told me that smartlist keeps a copy of DIST in memory,
Nope. SL is a collection of helper programs, so it wouldn't work at all well if any one of these helper programs kept the dist file in core.
and that smartlist didn't update automatically changes in the DIST file unless the where performed using X-commands.
Yes, it does. I'm very curious as to why it didn't work for you, since this knowledge might help me to improve the faq.

Assuming that you are on some flavor of UNIX machine and that you do have SSH/telnet access to your mail files: Navigate to the directory containing your dist file, (the mailing list directory), 'cat' on dist file and dump in a 'cut and paste' of the email address list. Must be only one address per line and in 'normal' address format, that is no aliases, just the raw address. Example (~$ = prompt): ~$ cp dist dist.orig <Enter> ~$ cat > dist [paste] <Enter> <Ctrl-d> If the list came from a MS editor, it might be a good idea to remove control from end of lines, etc. Example, run from prompt on command line (~$): ~$ cp dist dist.b4cleanup ~$ cat dist | grep -v ^M > dist Should give you a clean copy of dist file, although, you probably won't need this as cut and paste will probably not bring over end of line junk. Peter, That did the trick. I copies the dist file to my computer and edited in the email addresses. Then FTP it back to the server. I then sent out a test mailing to the mailing list and it worked fine.
