Interesting. Editing the dist file always worked for me, when I needed to do so...
I had tryied some time ago to fill DIST list editing it in my PC and it never worked. Initially I thought that it was caused by the <CR><LF> versus <LF> difference between MS-Windows and Unix, but it was't.
How did you determine that line termination was NOT the problem? Exactly how did the system fail?
A friend of mine finally got it done using X-commands, something that requires programing skills, and that it is non mentioned in Section 5.
No programming skills required. And X-Commands are mentioned in several places in the faq and manual.

Nope. SL is a collection of helper programs, so it wouldn't work at all well if any one of these helper programs kept the dist file in core.
and that smartlist didn't update automatically changes in the DIST file unless the where performed using X-commands.
