Thanks to all who answered my call for help.
For the moment I am dealing with "nomail" by removing the addresses
from the "dist" file while keeping them in the "accept" file. I don't
think this particular list will generate enough traffic to need
automation. It is a list for distributors of experimental and
avant-garde film and video, and there are only about two dozen to
speak of.

mail" (receive suspension), "receive digests" (smartlist deals with digests
as seperate lists), or "receive copies of their own posts" (there is no way
for a subscriber NOT to receive copies of their own posts)."
In the .bin directory within the 'subscribe' script (lines #'s are according
to my distro):
90: NOT_METOO=""
91:
92: #$formail -k -xSubject: <$tmprequest |
93: # $grep 'no.*[^a-z]cop.*[^a-z]please' >/dev/null && NOT_METOO=" (-n)"
94:
95: $multigram -a "$subscraddr$NOT_METOO" dist >/dev/null
96:
119: # if $test -z "$NOT_METOO"
120: # then
121: $echo "By default, copies of your own submissions will be
returned."
122: # else
123: # $echo "As requested, copies of your own submissions will not be
returned."
124: # fi
Not sure what this means, but it could mean that this can be uncommented to
have no copy returned to sender, when sender has subscribed with 'no copy
please' included in the subject field, however why one would want to do
this, i am not entirely sure??
(Aside: I apologize, because i had to mess with the subject by removing a 'Re:' in order to make my mail client send this!!)

Hello,
I just created a list using smartlist and I would like some
information, please, if anyone can help.
What do I tell new subscribers they should do if they want to change
their subscription options (disable mail, receive digests, receive
copies of their own posts...). Or how can I change those options for
them? I see a valuable ressource for this "smartlist" group:
membership configuration is available on a website. But my group does
not have a website.
Sorry if this question seems very basic but I could not find this
information in the manual or the FAQ, unless I wasn't looking in the
right place.
Any help would be appreciated,
Pip Chodorov

I would suggest that you probably want to set a maxconcur rather than
let that go untethered.

Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to get smartlist (choplist) to pass
just one recipient per message to sendmail. I've tried the obvious in
rc.init with the following settings:
minnames = 1 # minimum number of names per call
mindiffnames = 1 # minimum for maxnames-minnames
maxnames = 2 # maximum number of names per call
maxsplits = 0 # maximum number of parts to split dist in
maxsize = 200000 # maximal disk space to be taken up per mail
maxconcur = 0 # maximum number of concurrent sendmail
calls
but it just doesn't seem to work. I know choplist is using the configured
values to call sendmail because I can see something like "choplist 1 1 2 0
sendmail -t -odb -odq....." in the logs. There are still 3,000-5,000 (for
instance @aol.com) recipeints per message getting lumped together. The
reason this is a problem is because as an anti-spam precaution, mail servers
are rejecting connections from other servers that appear to be spamming and
then my newsletter doesn't get delivered to many people. Does have a
solutions for getting no more than 2 recipients per message?
Thanks very much!!!

Hi there list,
Name here is Scott. I just installed Smartlist a few days ago. I am
having trouble accessing the .bin and also the .etc directories for
Smartlist. I am wondering if any one can tell me what to chown them to
and chgrp and chmod them too. Thanks for the help.

Perhaps it's possible that your list has been tweaked to allow commands
in the email body, something like what's discussed at
http://www.hartzler.net/smartlist/SmartList-FAQ.html#Section_3.2
But different in that I believe .examples/rc.local.r00 wants list
commands at the very top...? In any case, I guess it's time to change
the moderator password. :-)

I have a moderated list that seems to be working just fine. However, I
just noticed that some postings that had "approved: <list_pwd>" in the
body made it directly to the list, requiring no moderator approval.
The strange part is that "approved: <list_pwd>" was the starting line in
the very first posting (how that happened, no idea!) but all the
subsequent 'replies' simply quoted it and got through.
I was looking through the list archives but couldn't find any post
talking about this problem.
Thanks,
Nishi
Anyone able to help with some problem-solving for flush_digests, or
able to explain the options that can be used in flush_digest. I
cannot find any documentation that explains it. :(
I am getting the errors
Subject: Cron <slist@lists2> /u1/slist/.bin/flush_digests
/usr/sbin/sendmail: invalid option -- -
another day I get
/usr/sbin/sendmail: invalid option -- 7
I am used to the occasional breakage of digests and seeing the names
of the affected lists in the error line, however, this sort of error
has me flummoxed.
Anyone got thoughts?

For that to be possible, the list server would have to send a
separate message to each subscriber individually. Smartlist
doesn't do that. If you have a number of subscribers at one
address, say yahoo.com or, as in my case usc.edu, it aggregates
them and sends one message to that particular mail host with a
whole bunch of names attached. Much more efficient for all
concerned, but it makes it impossible to put individual messages to
different subscribers. There are some list servers that do what
you want. The one I happen to know does this is a commercial
server made by Lyris. I suspect there are many more nowadays,
since most of the spam I get seems to put all sorts of
individualized content such as putting random garbage at the end of
the Subject line, but I don't know much about them.
