Call for Papers
2nd Workshop on Quality of Service in Distributed Object Systems
Workshop #2 at ECOOP 2001
http://www.dist-systems.bbn.com/confs/2001/QoSDOS/
Budapest Hungary: June 19, 2001 (Tuesday)
The workshop addresses the state of the art and the future of
Quality of Service management in distributed object systems.
The objective is to provide presentations and discussions
about the influence of QoS provision on the object model.
An additional focus is put on component-based systems and
the influence of QoS provision on the component specification and
proper mapping to the underlying distribution infrastructure.
Topics include, but are not restricted to
- Modeling QoS: suitability of object oriented modeling
techniques, influences of QoS provision on the object
model, e.g. type systems
- Specification: Use of containers to specify and enforce QoS
properties for a component.
- Structure: AOP, open implementations
design patterns, or contract aware components
- Implementation: Use of components for implementing ORBs
- Scope of QoS-integration: generic integration, multi-category
support, impact on architecture and underlying object-model
- Management: integration of QoS management and network and
application management
- Experiences: of QoS integration in OO-Middleware platforms
- Specialized QoS platforms vs. extending existing platforms
- Bind-time QoS integration: Naming, Trading, and Negotiation
of QoS in open distributed systems
- Accounting and Pricing of QoS
Submission Process:
A one to two page extended abstract describing your research is
required. The paper will be distributed to the other participants
and published on this website. The preferred format is
pdf or html. Participants should also be prepared to give a 15 minute
presentation on their research. To facilitate discussion, workshop
is limited to 15-20 people.

Dear TC6 members,
I forward you the message I received from Mr. Lim Chen Yam from the
Malaysia Computer Society, nominating a new representative for TC6.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Soo Hoe for his past
collaboration with TC6 and for having successfully organized Seacomm
events, in which many TC6 members participated.
Best regards
Augusto Casaca
Dear WG 6.6 members,
In addition to announcing the new chairman of WG 6.6, I would like to
extend sincere thanks to Wolfgang Zimmer for his efforts during
chairmanship of WG 6.6. This period has been an excellent period for WG
6.6. This was also evident in the many comments of appreciation and
thanks that WG 6.6 members expressed during the nomination process.
Best regards
Augusto Casaca
(Chairman TC6)
Dear All,
Please find the attached IFIP's voucher scheme.
This may help you to get to Cape Town.

The wireless personal communications world is at the dawn of next
revolutionary step forward. From initial voice and low-speed data
services it is jumping into a new environment. Broadband 3G wireless
service platforms offer a significant leap in types of information
available to end users, offering a multitude of new services.
The possibilities of video on demand, multimedia, unlimited Internet
access, distant learning etc. will be life changing. Network operators
are investing billions today in licences, infrastructure, and
strategic plans. The robust business cases and marketing strategies
should be prepared for 3G systems. There are many questions that need
to be answered including: what will be the 2G to 3G migration roadmap,
how to interwork existing services with 3G networks, what will be
commercial drivers for new services and sources for revenue?
To answer these questions and many others the following areas have
been selected as the primary categories for paper submission:
Enabling Technologies and Infrastructure:
- Advances in 3G mobile terminals
- Software radio
- Smart & phased array antennas
- Technology evolution of 3G wireless systems
- Evolution towards a common IP-based backbone network
- Support of previous generations in 3G networks
3G networks deployment:
- 3G Vision & drivers
- Cost effective deployment of 3G networks
- UMTS Network Performance optimisation
- Migration plans
- Overlay and replacement considerations
- 3G impact on existing telecommunications infrastructure
- Spectrum sharing of 2G and 3G
- 3G network deployment scenarios
Services:
- 3G services vision
- Global roaming
- High-speed Internet access
- Video conferencing and multimedia
- M-commerce
- Impact of service type on cell capacity
Standardisation:
- Current 3G standardisation status
- Standard comparison: W-CDMA, cdma2000, UWC-136, WP-CDMA
- Regulatory/Political/Patent issues
Business opportunities:
- User acceptance
- 3G market forecasts
- Sources for revenue
- Business case for 3G network deployment

Dear TC6 members,
As you are aware a small Committee, consisting of myself, Harry Rudin
and Wolfgang Zimmer, started looking for a new WG 6.6 chairman since
last year. The reason was that the time period of Wolfgang as WG 6.6
chairman had already exceeded the usual 6 years allowed for a WG
chairmanship according to the IFIP bylaws.
The Committee agreed to propose the name of Dr. Raouf Boutaba from Univ.
of Waterloo, Canada, for the WG 6.6 chairmanship. Dr. Boutaba showed
availability and willingness in serving in that position. In our view,
due to his high knowledge in the field of Network Management, as
documented in his excellent cv, and to his acceptance within the Group,
Dr. Boutaba will be an excellent choice.
We formally made this proposal to WG 6.6 by e-mail and we had a good
number of supporting messages and no message against. Now, I would like
to formally propose to TC6 to endorse Raouf Boutaba as the new WG 6.6
chairman, in order that I can proceed with his nomination. If you wish
to make any comments on this proposal, please do them until March 21st.
If no comments received until that date I will assume that no objection
is raised.
The cv of Dr. Boutaba and his statement for the WG 6.6 chairmasip is
sent in attach.
I cannot finish this mail without showing all my appreciation and
gratitude for the excellent work done by Wolfgang Zimmer during all
these years as WG 6.6 chairman. The high value of the events supported
by WG 6.6 shows all the good work that this WG has developed along the
years. We continue counting on Wolfgang to work with us in the coming
years. This actually is already happening in the next IM Conference,
which is chaired by Wolfgang Zimmer.
Best regards
Augusto Casaca

Dear Dr Casaca,
I have attended the IEEE ComSoc CNOM Meeting at Globecom end of November and
talked to the Chairman of this committee who I know well. I have also talked to
Wolfgang Zimmer last week during DSOM. Based on these discussions and the one with
Guy Pujolle earlier this last summer, I think that I have now a better idea of
IFIP TC6.6 WG.
As per your request for a statement, please find below the directions I think can
be followed by the TC6.6 WG during the next mandate:
* Globalization beyond European Union and North America
* Strengthen relationships with South America and Asia Pacific
* Maintain a good relationship with CNOM
* (co-)Sponsor and organize TC6.6 WG events
* Open new areas of activity with respect to the IFIP charter
Best regards,
Raouf
