The 20th IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium,
hosted by the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (CTI,
Greece), will be held on the Isle of Rhodes in Greece at the Rodos Palace
Resort Hotel & Convention Center. Considered a premier European
conference site, the hotel tower provides spectacular views of gardens and
the blue Aegean Sea alongside its modern conference facilities. Situated
on the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of two continents, Rodos
combines the worldliness of Europe with the mystery of the Orient in an
atmosphere that allows visitors to discover ancient Greek cities, a
medieval town with its own castle, charming small villages, and sun
drenched beaches. Rodos is also one of the most developed islands in the
Mediterranean, providing every holiday amenity, including a yachting
harbor, entertaining night life, and casino and sports facilities. The
Rodos airport has direct flights to major international cities and other
Aegean islands as well as many daily flights from Athens International
Airport. With 300 sunny days per year, the island holds the Greek record
for sunshine, and its remarkably rich legacy in archaeological treasures
and developed tourism infrastructure make Rodos a very special place to
gather for IPDPS 2006. Plan to arrive early and stay late!

IPDPS Web at www.ipdps.org.
IPDPS 2006 COMMERCIAL PARTICIPATION
There are three exciting forums available for commercial participants to
showcase their technologies at IPDPS 2006: (1) Give a presentation in a
special Commercial Track, which includes publication of a technical
article in the proceedings of the symposium. (2) Offer an evening
Commercial Tutorial to provide orientation and training to symposium
participants interested in using and/or learning more about your
technology. (3) Participate in three days of Commercial Exhibits by having
a booth where your company can promote awareness about its recent
technological advances in a "walk-up-and-talk" setting with a diverse
audience. Participants in one or more of the above events will be
designated as Commercial Sponsors and will have their company logo linked
on the IPDPS home page. For more detailed information and to reserve your
spot, contact one of the Commercial Co-chairs - John K. Antonio
(antonio(a)ou.edu) or Theodoros Komninos (komninos(a)cti.gr) - as early as

IPDPS BIRDS-OF-A-FEATHER
These are informal sessions in which a group of researchers can gather for
discussions on a topic of mutual interest. BOF space will be available
early in the evening and a typical BOF session will last one to two hours.
We'll provide the space, you provide the topic and gather the people.
Please reserve space in advance by contacting the General Vice Chair
Charles Weems (weems(a)cs.umass.edu). Reservations should be made by January
16, 2006. BOF sessions will be advertised in advance of the meeting on
the IPDPS web site and can be linked to a BOF announcement web page. The
goal of the BOF sessions is to encourage new collaborations and research
directions, to inspire educational initiatives, and to nurture the
development of new workshop proposals and other initiatives and

Call for Papers
WILLOPAN 2006
The First International Workshop on Wireless Personal and Local Area
Networks
http://www.willopan.org/
In Conjunction with COMSWARE 2006
January 8th, 2006
New Delhi, India
Wireless local area networks (LANs) and personal area networks (PANs)
are becoming more and more popular today. Applications for such networks
include wireless extensions of wired networks (such as 802.11 family of
networks), cable replacement and short-range communications (such as
Bluetooth and UWB), packet radio networks, sensor networks (such as
802.15.4 ZigBee), and other wireless networks with fixed or variable
topology. Performance of such networks is the major factor that
determines their feasibility for the given set of application
requirements. Performance has many different aspects, from physical and
data link layers, and all of these are intimately related to topology,
energy efficiency, management, user mobility, and security issues. The
key goals of this improvement include Quality of Service (QoS) support
mechanisms, efficient channel access mechanisms, and energy saving
mechanisms, etc. The effort to improve the MAC layer is linked with many
technical challenges including compatibility with legacy networks,
complexity in implementation, and practical values in real market, etc.
The need to address QoS support, MAC enhancement, and energy saving and
provide timely, solid technical contributions in the MAC layer of these
networks establishes the motivation behind this workshop. Original
papers are invited on emerging architectures and technologies in the
design of wireless local area networks (WLANs) and wireless personal
area networks (WPANs) with emphasis on the use of such networks in
diverse areas of applications such as supporting ubiquitous mobile
Internet access, and the design of ad-hoc/mesh networks, and sensor
networks. The workshop solicits high quality and previously unpublished
work in the field. The main scope of the workshop is the MAC layer and
above. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
" Design and improvements of MAC protocols
" Performance evaluation of different MAC protocols
" Mobility and handoff
" Scheduling and link adaptation
" UWB wireless networks and related issues
" Spectral and power management issues
" Cross-layer approaches
" Network measurement and management
" Range estimation and location management (e.g., using UWB)

(!!! Hotel reservation and early registration deadline Sept 5 !!!)
Dear Colleagues
The Second IFIP Workshop on Autonomic Communications (WAC2005) will take
place on Oct 3-5, 2005 in Vouliagmeni-Athens, Greece. Workshop information
at:
http://www.autonomic-communication.org/wac/http://cgi.di.uoa.gr/~istavrak/WAC_2005/
!!! -- IMPORTANT !!!!! --
Please note that Monday Sep 5 is the cut off date to keep the hotel rooms
for the participants. We would urge you to get the hotel registration form
from
http://cgi.di.uoa.gr/~istavrak/WAC_2005/Margi_Hotel_Reservation.doc
and fax it to the hotel. There is full refund provision for cancellations
before Sept 19.
The hotel is really very nice and the rate is a reduced one for WAC2005. The
Margi hotel offers a winning combination of hospitality, elegant interiors,
top quality services and the amenities of a city hotel and a resort
location.
Also, please note that the early registration deadline is also on Sept 5.
Please get the form from
http://cgi.di.uoa.gr/~istavrak/WAC_2005/WAC2005_registration_form.doc
and follow the instructions.
The workshop venue (Vouliagmeni - Kavouri area) is a picturesque peninsula
at the edge of the city of Athens right on some of the best beaches of the
area, the picturesque Vouliagmeni lake and as close as 20-minutes drive from
the centre of Athens. October is a very attractive season for the
Vouliagmeni-Kavouri area, since the weather is warm enough for pleasant
beach access and cool enough for enjoying outdoor activities in the
surrounding parks as well as touring the archaeological sites of Athens.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop. Please let us know if you
need help with your arrangements
Best Regards
Ioannis Stavrakakis, University of Athens

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
* Researchers explore whether parrot has concept of zero:
Scientists are investigating whether a bird hit on a concept that mathematicians failed to grasp for centuries.
* Scientists blast hole in comet:
A projectile slammed into comet Tempel 1 with a huge blast, in the crowning moment of a mission designed to learn more about the object's structure.
* Studies back tale that banished children founded tribe:
Banished children survived in a southeast Asian jungle, it is said, to found the area's only hunter-gatherer tribe. New genetic and linguistic evidence supports key elements of the story.
* Genes behind transsexualism possibly found:
Some men are convinced they are women trapped in male bodies. Researchers say genes may be to blame.
* Giant telescope could eavesdrop on alien TV:
An enormous new telescope should be able to pick up TV and radar signals from far-off worlds, scientists say.
* Is the universe revealing its shape?
New evidence suggests the shape may be a strange form of dodecahedron, a 12-sided object.
