Dear all,
you will remember that we agreed in Toronto that meeting 2005/2
in Wroclaw (Oct. 29+30) should have a special format.
We want to concentrate on the future and on a new strategy for TC6.
This appears to be more than necessary due to several developments
of the past:
- shrinking attendance of events
- publication problems (an example: change of publisher from Kluwer to
Imperial College Press (!) despite a valid contract without any
notification!)
- reduced information of Programme Committee members about the decisions on
acceptance/rejection of manuscripts (together with questionable rejections/
acceptances and with corresponding negative impression on IFIP TC6 events
- strategy for better visibility, e.g. by tutorials in developing countries
- .... (many more problems)
The"normal" topics (attendance, officers, conference reports and planning,..)
should be treated only very shortly at this particular meeting.
By the way: The number of working hours will be rather limited:
- The meeting will start Saturday, Oct. 29, 9 a.m.
and last - interrupted by a short lunch break - until 4.30 p.m.
(thereafter we will enjoy some cultural programmes followed by a dinner
arranged by our host, Adam Grzech; thank you very much, Adam, for that
programme which should convince the still undecided delegates to attend
the meeting.
I know about the programme but maybe Adam should inform the delegates
from his side
or keep it as a secret until the time of the meeting).
- On Sunday, Oct. 30, we will restart at 9 a.m. and finish by 1 p.m. since
many delegates have a return flight on Sunday afternoon.
My desire:
It would be excellent if each one of you would think about strategical
and future
issues of TC6
*** and if you could bring forward these ideas at the time of the meeting
or (even better) in a written version well before the time of the meeting;
such thoughts (even informally documented) would be included in the
meeting
documents and this would allow to discuss things much more constructively.
Deadline: October 15.
Thus I invite you cordially to present your ideas well before the meetings.
This holds also (and particularly!) for those delegates who cannot attend
the meeting for whatsoever reason. We will take such reactions as a sign
of activity
and - to formulate it very clearly - we are not at all interested in
ghost delegates
who don't attend meetings, don't even send apologies and/or don't contribute
by constructive ideas (even if those ideas may be controversial).
Best regards and see (most of you) soon
Otto
Dear Otto
Sorry I won't be able to attend.
Question: are you planning to participate in the world summit on
Information Society WSIS phase 2, in Tunisia in November?
Farouk
To IFIP WG 6.x chair(wo)men:
Dear all,
please send me your Working Group report for meeting 2005/2 in Wroclaw
(Poland)
in due time:
Deadline is October 15, 2005.
Moreover, I still miss the answers concerning attendance from:
Raouf Boutaba (WG 6.6)
Dominique Gaiti (WG 6.7)
Ioannis Stavrakakis (WG 6.3)
John Derrick (WG 6.1)
Harry Perros (WG 6.10)
Guy Omidyar (WG 6.8): participoation is uncertain. Clarification is very
much wanted
in particular due to the event PWC'05 in Colmar and for better planning of
future events.
Best regards
Otto

CALL FOR PAPERS- JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
http://www.cstp.umkc.edu/jnsm/
Special Issue on Management of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless
Sensor Networks
A real revolution is taking place in wireless networking with
fundamentally different architectures and services. Wireless Ad hoc
networks (WAHNs) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are two leaders in
this paradigm shift where the "network" is autonomously formed among many
nodes (PDAs, lap-tops, sensors, etc.) with varying functionalities and
power levels. These networks will be the enablers for ubiquitous computing
and communications, as well as they can perform significant functions
during natural disasters where pre-existing communications infrastructures
may be destroyed. An ad hoc network configures itself dynamically
depending on the environment, requiring perhaps a management approach that
also dynamically adapts itself. In a wireless sensor network, nodes are
assumed to be discardable, requiring fault management to have a totally
different approach than for a traditional wired network. Given that WSNs
and WAHNs will be dominant networks in not so distant future, what are the
challenges for managing these complex and dynamic environments? This
special issue intends to include articles describing the results of the
latest work in the management of WSNs and WAHNs. The focus of this
special issue will include (not limited to) the following topics:
· Management architectures for WAHNs and WSNs
· Management protocols for WAHNs and WSNs
· Security management for WAHNs and WSNs
· Configuration and policy-based management for WAHNs and WSNs
· Resource allocation and resource discovery for WAHNs and WSNs
· Topology discovery for WAHNs and WSNs
· Network auto-reconfiguration and self organization for WAHNs and WSNs
· Scalability, reliability, and performance issues of WAHNs and WSNs
· Call admission and traffic control policies for WAHNs and WSNs
· Congestion control for WAHNs and WSNs
· Fault management. fault tolerance and error recovery for WAHNs and WSNs
· Power management and control algorithms for WAHNs and WSNs
· Data management and representation for WAHNs and WSNs
· Interoperability with overlay fixed and wireless networks
· Applications and services specific network management approaches for
WAHNs and WSNs
· Service discovery and management for WAHNs and WSNs
· Management issues in pilot projects, test beds, implementations for
WAHNs and WSNs
