Lokalgruppe kennen!
Wir freuen uns auf euch!

Our next open meetup is next Wednesday, September 25th 2019, in the
seminar room S06 at the lecture center C.A.R.L.
How safe is our world and what can we do to make it safer?
On Wednesday we will present the paper 'Vulnerable World Hypothesis' by
Nick Bostrom, with a discussion afterward. In this paper, the concept of
a vulnerable world is presented. That is a world in which civilization
is threatened by special technological developments (e.g. biological
weapons). Several paths towards a more stable and safe world are also
presented.
If you are interested in the topic of the talk or just want to have a
chat about philosophy and rationality, come around and get to know the
local group!
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
Dear subscribers,
In November there will be a workshop on applied rationality in Münster. We recommend you check it out and consider applying. Here is the message from the organizers from EA Münster:
"Together with Anne Wissemann we are going to do a 3-day weekend workshop on applied rationality in Münster, Germany.
**Summary**
speakers: Anne Wissemann & Alexander Popiak
date: 2019-11-01 – 03, 10am - 6pm
application form: https://forms.gle/nYF2PmJLTEwYtvJi6
(Deadline: Monday, 2019-09-30, confirmations will be sent on Saturday, 2019-10-12)
location: Paul-Gerhardt-Haus, Friedrichstr. 10, 48145 Münster (seminar rooms are wheel-chair accessible)
cost: 70-90€ + Tip for Alex
topic: CFAR techniques and other useful concepts
target audience: Aspiring EAs with an interest in applied rationality
Limited to 20 attendees
Housing available on request
**Aims**
For the last two years we – the EA Münster group – have been organizing weekly Meetups including Socials, Book-Clubs as well as talks with discussion rounds. This is the first time we are organizing a weekend workshop to allow the regional EA community to:
* do a real deep-dive into topics, which is not really possible at evening events
* socialize with great people
* filter for really interested newcomers, and increase their engagement
* Due to weekend time frame: invite great speakers and people from other cities (who would not take the effort traveling for an evening only)
** Overview **
Anne is a CEA community building grantee. She also works as a coach for members of the rationality and effective altruism communities. In addition to her own CFAR workshop she has undergone CFAR's mentorship training and is currently taking part in CFAR's instructor candidate program. In Berlin, she helps develop weekly rationality practice sessions together with Alex. Alex is a CFAR alumni and long-running LessWrong community member and organizer that has held workshops such as Goal Factoring at the Berlin rationality meetup.
Amongst other things, they plan to teach the participants:
* Goal Factoring
* Productive Disagreement
* Focusing
* Internal Double Crux
* Trigger-Action Plans (TAP)
* Hamming Circles
For a more detailed description see this overview of techniques: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16Mc0W2i1-_Av6niVVUoEURhUE8I9h7H4tXcuWR-…
Vegan lunch, breakfast, snacks and coffee are included. If you need housing, please mention it in the comment area on the application form or get in touch with us directly.
**Past events**
In January Anne did a similar weekend workshop organized by the EA group in Cologne. This workshop is one day longer to allow for more time to practice and prepare to integrate the learnings into one's life, but there will still be a lot of the same content.
**Notes on finances**
The workshop will be self supporting, the ticket price is used to fund travel costs for our speakers as well as lunch, snacks and coffee. In case we should make any profit it will be donated to the German Effective Altruism Network to fund future workshops, allow discounts and the like.
Discounts are available if you feel you cannot afford to attend the workshop otherwise."
Cheers,
Tom - EA Aachen

Liebe Abonennten,
Was für Probleme genau
Future of Humanity Institute Oxford.
Lokalgruppe kennen!
Wir freuen uns auf euch!
Viele Grüße,
Tom

Dear subscribers,
Our next open meetup is next Wednesday, September 11th 2019, in the
seminar room S06 at the lecture center C.A.R.L.
In Effective Altruism, philosophy plays a big role. Ideally, we would
prefer a set of ethics which tell us consistently in every situation,
what the best course of action would look like. Sadly, many of the
conventional ethics break down if we think it's possible for the
universe to be infinite. We will discuss which problems exactly occur in
this case and how we can try to circumvent them in our next talk on
Infinite Ethics, a paper by Nick Bostrom from the Future of Humanity
Institute Oxford.
If you are interested in the topic of the talk or just want to have a
chat about philosophy and rationality, come around and get to know the

Liebe Abonennten,
Lokalgruppe kennen!
Wir freuen uns auf euch!

Dear subscribers,
Our next open meetup is this Wednesday, August 28th, 2019, at 7:30 pm in
the seminar room S06 in the lecture center CARL.
In Effective Altruism, we often talk about what the most important
problems are and how to tackle them. But which organizations and
projects do already exist, and are pursuing research or testing
interventions to save as many lives as possible?
This week during our lightning talk, we will give a broad overview of
the different organizations that work in the core cause areas of
Effective Altruism. Hopefully, this will provide insight as to what the
professional part of the EA community is focused on and where one can
look to for interesting research to happen in the future.
If you are interested in the topic or just want to have a chat about
philosophy and rationality, come around and get to know the local group!

vergisst du was du unbedingt kaufen wolltest?

Dear subscribers,
Our next open meetup is next Wednesday, July 31th 2019, at 7:30pm in the
S06 (CARL).
You've read an interesting article and don't want to forget everything
right away? Every time you go shopping, you forget what you actually
wanted to buy? Maybe you also just want to stop forgetting names and
dates all the time?
That's what memory techniques are for! At our next meetup, Marcel from
the local group will give a short talk on techniques to facilitate
memorization. We will then practice these techniques together on several
examples.
Afterwards, there will be plenty of time to chat about effective
altruism and talk about other interesting topics.
If you are interested in the topic of the talk or just want to have a
chat about philosophy and rationality, come around and get to know the
local group!
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
Best,
Tom
