HiWi job: Help us improve our open-source Rust library for FEM simulations in Computer Graphics!

During the past year, our group - the Computer Animation group led by Prof. Jan Bender - has published two papers built on top of an in-house library for the Finite Element Method (FEM). We are now working on refactoring and restructuring this library so that it is suitable for publishing under an open-source license. The library is written in Rust, a safe and modern alternative to C and C++. In brief, Rust allows you to write code as fast as C/C++, yet without the burden of dealing with broken build systems, undefined behavior, segmentation faults and data races for parallel code. This allows us to spend more time developing and substantially less time debugging. Our library will - to the best of our knowledge - be the first publicly available FEM library in Rust, and we want you to help us develop it. Once published, we intend to follow an open-source development model, where contributions are made as pull requests to a publicly available Git repository. Our group is multi-disciplinary: we study the simulation of deformable solids, constrained rigid bodies, fluids and related tasks, such as reconstructing meshes from implicitly defined surfaces. As a HiWi in our group working on this project, you will have the chance to work on a variety of topics, depending on your interests. Some of the topics relevant for the library are: - Finite Element Method (FEM) for non-linear deformable solids. - Parallel programming: FEM assembly, sparse matrix algorithms, solutions of linear systems. - Geometry tasks: Geometry processing, collision detection, distance queries. - Frictional contact mechanics. - Input/output: Importing and exporting time series of textured 3D models and auxiliary data, compatibility with 3D software like Maya and Blender. - Software development practices and documentation. We are looking for highly motivated candidates that: - have knowledge about and a strong interest in physics simulation. - have a strong interest in, and are comfortable with, programming. - are interested in working closely in a team with PhD students and other HiWis. - are able to work and learn independently with regular (or sometimes irregular) supervision. - have a decent grasp of both spoken and written English. - are in their Bachelor or Master studies, ideally with the possibility of working with us over a longer period of time. - preferably have some experience with FEM, but we are also interested in strong candidates who are interested in helping out with the non-FEM parts of the library. Experience with Rust is not a requirement, as we will provide the necessary training and time to get up to speed. Experience with Rust or C++ is, however, an advantage. We offer: - salary regulated by standard HiWi rates. - approx. 10 hours per week, but this is negotiable. - the opportunity to work on an open-source project, which you can demonstrate to future employers. - friendly colleagues. Liebe Studierende, in unserer Arbeitsgruppe Schaumextrusion am Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) ist eine Stelle für eine Abschlussarbeit ausgeschrieben, die sich mit der automatischen Bildanalyse von 3D-Schaumaufnahmen befasst. Die Ausschreibung findet ihr anbei. New Seminar 'Learning-based Control'

*** Deutsche Fassung siehe unten *** Dear Students, we at the Institute for Data Science in Mechanical Engineering offer the English language seminar 'Learning-based Control' for the first time this semester. The seminar is open to students in the master's program, both from computer science and mechanical engineering. The use of machine learning and artificial intelligence has huge potential for building future engineering systems such as autonomous robots, vehicles, or smart infrastructure systems. However, important research challenges have to be overcome to have AI-systems operate in the real world such as the need for safety guarantees, data-efficient methods, and the combination of prior knowledge with data. Learning-based control is a recent and very active area of research that addresses these challenges and broadly denotes the intersection of the areas of automatic control and machine learning. This seminar will introduce you to this active area by studying recent research papers and topics including, for example, Gaussian processes for dynamics and control, (deep) reinforcement learning, hybrid physics- and data-based modeling, and verification for learning-based control. This is an interdisciplinary seminar offered in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. Das Seminar ist offen für Studierenden im Master sowohl aus der Informatik wie auch aus dem Maschinenbau. Der Einsatz von maschinellem Lernen und künstlicher Intelligenz hat ein enormes Potenzial für den Aufbau zukünftiger technischer Systeme wie autonome Roboter, Fahrzeuge oder intelligente Infrastruktursysteme. Allerdings müssen wichtige Forschungsherausforderungen überwunden werden, damit KI-Systeme in der realen Welt funktionieren können, wie z.B. die Notwendigkeit von Sicherheitsgarantien, dateneffiziente Methoden und die Kombination von Vorwissen mit Daten. Lernbasierte Regelung ist ein neuer und sehr aktiver Forschungsbereich, der sich mit diesen Herausforderungen befasst und im die Schnittmenge der Bereiche automatische Steuerung und maschinelles Lernen bezeichnet. Dieses Seminar führt Sie in dieses aktive Gebiet ein, indem es aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten und Themen wie z.B. Hallo zusammen, Wir entwickeln und bauen seit 2015 Rennwagen, die ausschließlich mit Solarenergie betrieben werden. Mit unserem nächsten Sonnenwagen werden wir erneut als einziges deutsches Team der Hauptrennklasse am härtesten Solarrennen der Welt teilnehmen – der World Solar Challenge. Der Lehrstuhl für Computergestützte Analyse Technischer Systeme (CATS) und der Lehrstuhl für Technologie Optischer Systeme (TOS) sind auf der Suche nach engagierten AbschlussarbeiterInnen, die sich mit einem praktischen Anwendungsfall von FEM Simulationen beschäftigen wollen. Im Speziellen geht es um die thermooptische Simulation der inhomogenen Temperaturverteilung in einer Linse, die durch einen Laserstrahl verursacht wird. Die Abschlussarbeit sollte noch dieses Jahr anfangen. Wer Interesse hat oder mehr Informationen möchte kann gerne einen Blick in den Anhang werfen und uns einfach direkt anschreiben. Dear CES Students, At SLA, we are developing a software framework for the Finite Cell Method (FCM), and we need you as a programmer! The FCM has tons of advantages compared to the FEM and has the potential to supersede it for many problems of structural mechanics. At present, it is used for the prediction of part distortion in the project VoKoES<https://www.sla.rwth-aachen.de/cms/Institut-fuer-Strukturmechanik-und-Leich…>, funded by EFRE NRW<https://www.efre.nrw.de/>. We are looking for someone to support us with expert knowledge in various fields of software development. Your tasks will be: • Different aspects of coding and software maintenance • Give advice with your IT knowledge • Set up our code for cross-platform compatiblity • Implementation of workflows for the FCM framework Your required skills are: • Good knowledge of C++ • Experience in software development • Knowledge of best practices in software development • Experience with Git • Experience with working in Linux environments would be a plus • Good English skills • German skills would be a plus I am looking forward to your application.
