But you're right, it's been _years_ since he's been around. However, the list belongs to the maintainer (or at least the machine's admin), not the members. You'll get no argument from me that the list should be moved (I believe I said exactly that a couple of times), but to suggest the admins need to take a poll to ask what they may or may not do with the existing list is silly, to say the least. They are certainly able to move this list to mailman without the list subscriber's permission - indeed, they _have_ done so, which makes my point for me. Whether we should move this list to a SmartList server is a completely seperate issue...one which Philip should probably weigh in on, since he is now maintaining the procmail/SmartList source and as such the de facto head of our band of merry wanderers... control of RE:[listname]RE:[listname]RE:[listname]RE:[listname]

Hi everyone, I manage several lists and have a recurring problem When there are many replies in a thread the actual title of the message eventually is hard to see for all the RE:[listname]'s in front of it. Is it possible to stop the repeated addition of RE:[listname] to the front of the subject title everytime it is answered? just leaving one? (even with all my reminders people still forget to get rid of them!!) best regards David Kelly AET

rc.custom and digests

Greetings from a listowner who is trained in networks, not mail lists; I have a smartlist set up (sort of) and it's already production with members. The individual e-mails are flying nicely. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the digest to work. I'm confused about a couple of things and find nothing in the FAQ or manual (yes, I really do read them) In the digest directory rc.custom, the appropriate lines read: #digest_flag digest_flag = yes # uncomment this if you want digests digest_age = 86400 # maximum age of a digest in seconds #digest_size = 32768 # maximum size of a digest in bytes #undigested_list = $list@$domain # Reply-To: address for digests and in the digest-d directory rc.custom is: #digest_flag digest_flag = yes # uncomment this if you want digests digest_age = 86400 # maximum age of a digest in seconds #digest_size = 32768 # maximum size of a digest in bytes undigested_list=911@$domain but I get no digests. See anything wrong there? (I did set it up to release the digest every 86400 - 24 Hrs.) Which rc.custom file gets edited for what? Mailing List Query

Hello: Not sure whether anybody can help, but I am having trouble using the smartlist software to work with Cgi-Scripts. I have 8 newsletters and would like to know if it is possible to use a cgi form with a smartlist subscription email address. I realise that in a normal subscription you simply send the email....but how can it be made to work with a form, without it needing to open up the Inbox. Thanks in advance. Approval via forward possible?

I use mostly web based e-mail services which doesn't allow editing headers or allowing for e-mail resends written by others (I have looked at a few e-mail clients and have yet to find one that does this). I was wondering if there is a receipe that would allow approvals for a moderated list by forwarding the e-mail to the list by the moderator. Is this possible? I have read the smartlist manual and the faq and didn't find this question addressed. I checked out the majordomo faq and the approvals are done via forward with the first line of the forward being "Approved: "password. Thanks for the help. Subscribe Question

Hi, I am using SmartList as provided my web hosting service (WebSiteSource). I have a question about subscribing people to the list. I have set up a form on my web site to take subscriptions to my mailing list. The form sends an email to the "-request" address from the requesting address with a subject of subscribe. This appears to work well, and I get an e-mail back to the list administrator only in the case of someone subscribing who is already on the list. When I subscribe someone using X-Command, I get an e-mail back to the list administrator in every case with the top eight multigram matches, and it seems to add the e-mail address and send a welcome message to the subscribing e-mail whether they are on the list or not. I guess what I would prefer that the X-Command method work more like the user subscribe method, and that if someone is subscribed that is already on the list, that they *not* be sent a welcome message. Subscribers E-mails

When testing the form I set up for subscriptions I noticed that if an e-mail address is close to one the is already subscribe smartlist doesn't subscribe it. I was just using short common names like bob@mydomain, tom@mydomain, etc. Then I used rob@mydomain and noticed that it wouldn't subscribe so then I tried rom@mydomain and som@mydomain and neither one of them would either. It seems that if only the first letter is different it won't subscribe. I'm just wondering if there is a fix for this or does everyone think that this won't happen too often anyways. Any thought would be appreciated. Thank-you, Ron
