I am trying to set up a moderated list on an ISP server. My ISP uses qmail.
After resolving some earlier problems (with help from this list -
thanks!) I think I am close to success.
I was able to successfully subscribe to my list.
But when I send a test message to my list, I (as the only moderator
and only subscriber) receive no message back.
The log contains the following:
>From abwatson(a)mindspring.com Sun Dec 09 23:08:45 2001
> Subject: test6
> Folder: formail -R"From X-Envelope-From:" -uDate:

Am I doing something wrong, or is qmail sabotaging my efforts (or both...)?
Any advice?

I am trying to set up a list on an ISP server which does provide procmail.
I have installed the smartlist software, and edited the rc.init file.
I was able to execute the createlist command, which created the
appropriate directories.
Then I encountered the instruction:
>Now make the following entries in your /usr/lib/aliases file:
>################################################
>testing: "|exec /usr/home/abwatson/users/slist/.bin/flist testing"
>testing-request: "|exec /usr/home/abwatson/users/slist/.bin/flist
>testing-request"
>##########################################################
>And make sure to run newaliases afterwards.
Fine, except that
> ls /usr/lib/aliases
ls: /usr/lib/aliases: No such file or directory
Do these instructions assume I have root access to the server? Can
smartlist be used with root access?

At the minimal risk of looking more foolish, I have another problem. After
uncommenting the appropriate "foreign_submit line" (dull sound of palm
smacking forehead), SmartList is now doing something else.
Now nothing goes through. Everyone on the accept list (delinked and
different from dist) gets rejected, with an X:Diagnostic header line to the
maintainer of "Not on the accept list." I edit with vi, so there aren't any
errant CR's or blank lines.
What say ye, O fonts of knowledge?

I am trying to set up a list that has the following properties:
1. Persons listed in the dist file (which is linked to the accept file)
will get all postings to the list.
2. Those listed in the accept2 file can post to the list but will nor
receive email from the list.
3. All others (those not in accept/dist or accept2) are not allowed to
post to the list and if they do then the maintainer will get the message
and the person who sent the message will receive the contents of accept.txt
I "THINK" I have exactly followed the instructions in section 3c of the
smartlist manual but it is not working. If anyone not listed in
accept/dist posts a message to the list, the message goes to the maintainer
and no one else. The sender does not get an email with the contents of
accept.txt. The same results occur for senders listed in accpt2 and those
not listed in accept2.
In case it is helpful, I attached a text file with the contents of the
following files:
accept, accept2, accept.txt. rc.custom, rc.submit
I will be happy to answer any other questions.
Many thanks.

Here is an update from today - after having established a new list, I used
it to send out a message (actually one apologizing fofr any confusion and
that I had recompiled the list and it was working normally again). I
received about ten replies to the message which were handled appropriately,
but then one from a compuserve account that once again bypassed the accept
file, and went out to the whole list. Talk about having a red face....
The "foreign_submit = yes" line is uncommented in both the rc.init and the
rc.custom
Does anyone have any ideas?
Bruce
I think this is in the FAQ ... (searching)
Yup!

This is counter intuitive though. I know what it says and all that,
but it easily leads you to assume that the "uncomment this line" part
refers to the line just before it. I feel this section should either
read:
#foreign_submit = no
##foreign_submit # uncomment this line if you
# want to restrict submitting to
# people on the accept list
*or*
#foreign_submit = yes # uncomment this line if you
# want to allow submissions of
# people not on the accept list
My 2 cents worth.
Kind regards,
Remmy

Violet,
In my configuration accept is the dist file for the list and accept2 is a link to the dist file for the digest. I also have an accept4 file which is all those people allowed to turn their receipt of list mail on and off (basicly a form of un/subscribe). Accept5 is the list of addresses from which postings are accepted which are not already in the dist files. If you have been counting, <g>, you'll notice that there is a gap -- yes, there is an accept3 as well, it contains those who are permitted to access the archive functions.
Rich
I'm back. :(
OK, now I'm getting frustrated. I went into rc.init file (you just open it in a text editor, edit it, and ftp it back up, right?) and changed max names to 50 instead of 64. I figured I'd start with a small change and work my way up since I really have NO idea what I'm doing in the first place.
I sent our newsletter out this morning after I did this. It shows up in the archive, but it was NOT delivered. Incidentally, ALL of the bounces are arriving in my moderators box and none of them are being removed after ANY number of bounces... I'm having to do it all by hand. I also have to do the unsubbing by hand because every time someone sends an "unsubscribe" email to newsletter-request(a)glamourgirlsinc.com like they're supposed to, it says they can't be found. When I search the dist file, they're RIGHT THERE every time. Who's dumb here... me or smartlist? <grin>
So I sent the newsletter out again tonight. I also BCCed myself to make sure it went out. Well, I got the BCC, but it has not delivered, because I'm not receiving any of the bounce messages in the mod box. It's there in the archive, but it's like it's not getting through to the list. Any suggestions for any of this stuff? LOL
I also have no idea how to monitor how the message is being sent out/or IF it is?
Thanks a ton,
Autumn

Sure.

I setup a file (called accept5 on my server) which looks like a dist file and contains the addresses of people who can post but who don't want to receive postings.
In rc.submit add accept5 to the accept and accept2 files being checked for allowed submitters (it is in that condition line under the check for foreign_submit)
Rich
I need to have a mailing list to which only members can post and which has
two classes of members:
1. NORMAL: Members who can post to the list and receive all posts to the
list.
2. POST ONLY: Members who can post to the list but who receive no email
from the list.
Is this possible with SmartList? If so how can I do it?
Many thanks.
