ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
In recent years, distributed applications have indeed gained a practical
and widely-known footing in everyday computing. Use of new communication
technologies have brought up divergent application areas, including mobile
computing, inter-enterprise collaborations, and ubiquitous services, just
to name a few. New challenges include the need for service-oriented archi-
tectures, autonomous and self-managing systems, peer-to-peer systems, grid
computing, sensor networks, semantic enhancements, and adaptivity and dyna-
micity of distribution constellations.
The DAIS conference series addresses all aspects of distributed applications,
including their design, implementation and operation, the supporting
middleware,
appropriate software engineering methodologies and tools, as well as experi-
mental studies and practice reports. This time we welcome in particular contri-
butions on architectures, models, technologies and platforms for interoperable,
scalable and adaptable systems that are related to the latest trends towards
service orientation and self-* properties.
DAIS'06 is the sixth event in a series of successful international conferences
which started in 1997. It will provide a forum for researchers, application
and platform service vendors and users, to review, discuss and learn about
new approaches, trends, concepts and experiences in the fields of distributed
computing. Due to the success of the predecessor conferences and the
emergence of many interesting and relevant new topics, DAIS has
recently switched to a one-year-rhythm.

Bologna, a historical capital of culture, was founded by the Etruscans
in the VI century B.C. Bologna sits in the southern part of the
historically and gastronomically famous Po River plain, a natural
crossroads in northern Italy. Bologna's location was important not only
for the trading of goods but also for the exchanging of ideas and the
disseminating of culture. The Università di Bologna, founded in 1088 is
the oldest university in the western world.
Bologna is famous for its porticoes. Dating back to the 12th century the
porticoes were used to enlarge houses to support the growing University
community. Today 350,000 people call Bologna their home, of which 100,000
are students. Bologna, Italy's culinary capital, is also famous for its
food. Furthermore, Bologna is surrounded by the famous food/wine regions
of Parma, Modena, and Tuscany.
Bologna is very accessible, being served by an international airport and
one of the main hubs of the Italian railway system. Within easy access
is Florence (1 hour), Milan (1.5 hours), Venice (1.5 hours), Rome (2.4
hours) and the ubiquitous Italian countryside of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany.

Dear Colleague,
We would like to encourage you to submit research papers to SIGCOMM
2006--the premier conference on networking and computer
communications--which will be held in Pisa, Italy on September
11th-15th. The CFP is attached below.
Our intent is for SIGCOMM 2006 to be very broad, inclusive of work
across the entire spectrum of networking research, including wireless,
network security, sensor networks, overlay, and peer-to-peer systems,
in addition to more traditional SIGCOMM topics. To help encourage that
breadth, we intend to accept approximately 50% more papers than in
previous years. With your help, we believe this will lead to three
very full, but also very interesting, days at the conference.
Further, we note that throughout the network research community, there
is renewed interest in network architecture, and what the future
Internet might be in 15-20 years. Fundamental "clean slate" approaches
and radical new ideas are definitely encouraged.
We look forward to reading your submissions and to seeing you in Pisa
in September.
Regards,
Tom Anderson & Nick McKeown

The 3rd International Conference on
Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06)
- Building Smart Worlds on Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://grid.hust.edu.cn/uic06/
Organized by Huazhong Univ. of Sci. and Tech. (HUST)
Co-Sponsored by HUST, NSFC, 863, ChinaGrid, IFIP
In Cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society (Applying)
Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, September 3-6, 2006
******************************************************
Following ubiquitous computers, networks, information,
services, etc., is a road towards a smart world (SW)
created on both real and cyber spaces. A SW is mainly
characterized by ubiquitous intelligence (UI) or
computational intelligence pervasive in the physical world,
filled with ubiquitous intelligent or smart things,
that are capable of computing, communicating, and behaving
smartly with some intelligence. One of the profound implications
of such ubiquitous smart things is that various kinds and
levels of intelligence will exist ubiquitously in
everyday objects, environments, systems and even ourselves,
and possibly be extended from man-made to natural things.
"Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of
all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are
essential elements and components of the SW.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of
intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive,
reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient,
perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking.
Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist
to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of
any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the
right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l
Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005,
Japan, Dec. 2005) which succeeds the 1st Int'l Workshop on
Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW2005,Taipei, Mar. 2005). It offers
a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in
developing intelligent/smart objects, environments, and systems
as well as discuss various personal/social/physical issues
faced by UI and SWs.
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Objects
* Electronic Label, Card, E-Tag and RFID
* Embedded Chips, Sensor & Actuator
* MEMS, NEMS, Mote & Biometric Device
* Everyday Good, Artifact, Robot, etc.
* Smart Appliance and Wearable Device
* Material, Textile, Cloth, Furniture, etc.
* Emerging Intelligent/Smart Objects
* Embedded Software and Agents
2. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Environments
* Room, Home, Office, Laboratory, etc.
* Building, Library, School, Campus, etc.
* Shop, Clinic, Hospital and Health Care
* Street, Yard, Park, Ground, City, etc.
