CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAl ISSUE ON WIRELESS MESH NETWORKS
Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier) Journal
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/adhoc/
Guest editors:
Xudong Wang, Kiyon, Inc.
Edward Knightly, Rice University
Marco Conti, National Research Council, Italy
Anthony Ephremides, University of Maryland
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless mesh networks consist of mesh clients and mesh routers. Mesh routers
form a wireless backbone via multi-hop ad-hoc networking but with
minimal-mobility. The mesh backbone provides network access for both wired and
wireless clients including mesh clients, and enables the integration of various
wired and wireless networks. Mesh clients can run as a mobile ad hoc network.
However, in order to achieve much better network performance, it is always
preferable for them to work under the coordination of mesh routers. Due to the
existence of a mesh backbone, wireless mesh networks possess many advantages
over other wireless networks, and are expected to be one of the most promising
wireless networking technologies. Despite recent progresses in wireless mesh
networks, many research issues still remain. This special issue is dedicated to
state-of-the-art research achievements in the area of wireless mesh networking.
The papers must focus on research problems that are specific to wireless mesh
networking, rather than on generic topics of ad-hoc or multi-hop networking.
This special issue will cover all aspects of wireless mesh networking. The
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Mesh network architecture and performance analysis
Mesh network capacity
Scalability issues and solutions
Medium access control and routing protocols
Protocol design for MIMO, adaptive antenna, reconfigurable radios,
software radios, and cognitive radios
Cross-layer design and optimization
QoS and multimedia traffic over wireless mesh networks
Topology, power, and mobility management
Interworking between heterogeneous networks and adaptive protocols
Network self-organization and self-configuration
Trustworthy networks and security algorithms
Incentives, cooperation, and reputation systems
Testbed, deployment, and application practice
Authors must submit their manuscripts through Elsevier Editorial System at
http://ees.elsevier.com/adhoc/, and must choose article type as Special
Issue-Wireless Mesh Networks. For detailed formatting instructions, please
refer to the guidelines available at the AD HOC Networks journal web site,
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/adhoc/.
The review process will be based on a pre-review phase for screening papers out
of the scope of this special issue, and a single round of technical reviews.
Acceptance will be limited to those papers requiring only minor revisions. The
key dates are listed as follows:
Manuscript Submission Due Date: March 15, 2006

University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal,
May 19, 2006
To be held in conjunction with "2006 IFIP Networking Conference"
http://networking2006.dei.uc.pt/workshops.htm
===========================
Workshop Purpose
================
Providing Quality of Service (QoS) into the Internet requires implementation
at the network level a variety of mechanisms and algorithms dealing with the
call and packet handling, network resource managing etc. In addition, they
should operate at different time scales, from the time scale of milliseconds
for handling packets in the routers up till the longer time scale, say
hours, for performing some actions to manage network resources in an optimum
way. Furthermore, a signaling system is extremely required to inform the
network about the user-application needs. As a consequence, enhanced
QoS-oriented architectures mainly based on DiffServ concept are currently
investigated and tested in research networks. Anyway, to provide QoS we need
to make an essential update of current Internet infrastructure. The workshop
is aimed at presenting and discussing current activities in this area,
including the results coming from running research projects.
Detailed Scope
==============
* Architectures for assuring QoS in the Internet
* QoS aware applications
* Enhanced Transport Protocols
* QoS routing
* QoS mechanisms in access and core networks

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
==============================
CALL FOR PAPERS
Distributed sensor systems have become a highly active research area due
to their potential for providing diverse new capabilities. Such systems
allow intelligent dense monitoring of physical environments, which makes
them immensely useful for data collection and analysis. While much
ongoing research has addressed networking, communication and low-level
self-configuration issues in such systems, there are also significant
challenges pertaining to systematic design, algorithm development and
analysis, and abstract modeling in order to achieve efficient and robust
realizations of large-scale distributed sensor systems. The large number
of sensor devices involved, severe power, computational and memory
limitations, resource heterogeneity, dense deployment and frequent
failures pose novel challenges to design, algorithms, analysis and
implementation.
The focus of the conference is on distributed computing issues in
large-scale networked sensor systems (including algorithms, applications,
and systematic design techniques and tools), but networking-related
contributions that support high level abstractions are also welcome.
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that
demonstrate current research on computational aspects of distributed
sensor systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Computation and programming models
- Energy models, minimization, awareness
- Distributed algorithms for collaborative information processing
- Theoretical performance analysis: complexity, correctness,
scalability, fault-tolerance
- Abstractions for modular design
- Languages, operating systems
- Task allocation, reprogramming and reconfiguration
- Dynamic resource management
- Scalable, heterogeneous architectures (node and system-level)
- Middleware interfaces, communication and processing primitives
- Design, simulation and optimization tools for deployment
and operation
- Design automation and application synthesis techniques
- Case studies: lessons from real world deployments
PAPER SUBMISSION
Submitted manuscripts may not exceed 12 single-spaced pages using
12-point size font on 8.5x11 inch pages, including figures and tables.

do something for itself if necessary) to the members of
the task force.
Roger Johnson had a spontaneous reaction (see below).
What are your reactions about that?

E-mail: hra(a)cs.uga.edu
PURPOSE / HISTORY:
This set of joint conferences is the largest annual
gathering of researchers in computer science, computer
engineering and applied computing. Many of the 28 joint
conferences in WORLDCOMP are the premier conferences for
presentation of advances in their respective fields.
The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated
research conferences into a coordinated research meeting
held in a common place at a common time. The main goal
is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number
of research areas that interact. The model used to form
these annual conferences facilitates communication among
researchers in different fields of computer science,
computer engineering and applied computing. Both inward
research (core areas of computer science and engineering)
and outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary,
and applications) will be covered during the conferences.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:
Prospective authors are invited to submit their draft
paper (about 5 to 8 pages - single space, font size of 10
to 12) to H. R. Arabnia by Feb. 20, 2006. E-mail submissions
in MS document or PDF formats are preferable (Fax or postal
submissions are also fine.) All reasonable typesetting
formats are acceptable (later, the authors of accepted
papers will be asked to follow a particular typesetting
format to prepare their papers for publication.)
The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will
be limited to 7 (IEEE style) pages. Papers must not have
been previously published or currently submitted for
publication elsewhere. The first page of the draft paper
should include: title of the paper, name, affiliation,
postal address, E-mail address, telephone number, and
Fax number for each author. The first page should also
include the name of the author who will be presenting
the paper (if accepted) and a maximum of 5 keywords.
Also, the name of the conference that the paper is being
submitted to must be mentioned on the first page.
Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance,
clarity, and soundness. Each paper will be refereed by
two researchers in the topical area. The Camera-Ready
papers will be reviewed by one person.
MEMBERS OF PROGRAM and ORGANIZING COMMITTEES:
The Program Committee includes members of chapters
of World Academy of Science (chapters: supercomputing;
scientific computing; artificial intelligence; imaging
science; databases; simulation; software engineering;
embedded systems; internet and web technologies;
communications; computer security; and bioinformatics.)
The Program Committee for individual conferences is
currently being formed. Those interested in joining
the Program Committee should email H. R. Arabnia
(hra(a)cs.uga.edu) the following information:
Name, affiliation and position, complete mailing address,
email address, tel/fax numbers, a short biography
together with research interests and the name of the
conference offering to help with.
LOCATION OF CONFERENCES:
The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo Resort
hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (with any overflows at other
near-by hotels). The Monte Carlo Resort is a mega hotel
with excellent conference facilities and over 3,000 rooms.
The hotel is minutes from the airport with 24-hour
shuttle service to and from the airport. This hotel has
many recreational attractions, including: waterfalls,
spa, pools and kiddie pools, sunning decks, Easy River
water ride, wave pool with cascades, lighted tennis
courts, health spa (with workout equipment, whirlpool,
sauna, ...), arcade virtual reality game rooms, nightly
shows, snack bars, a number of restaurants, shopping area,
bars, ... Many of these attractions are open 24 hours a
day and most are suitable for families and children. The
negotiated room rate for conference attendees is very
reasonable. The hotel is within walking distance from
most other attractions (major shopping areas, recreational
destinations, fine dining and night clubs, free street
shows, ...).

Dear all,
here is some new information (from the IFIP secretariat) concerning the
advertisement of new events. Please ensure that the new facilities (we
have waited so long for them) will be intensively
and extensively used.
Best regards
Otto
------------------------------------------
Dear IFIP members,
The IFIP Secretariat offers you a new service at the IFIP web site. All
"Call for papers" of forthcoming events should be listed centrally.
Please follow this link: http://www.ifip.org/Cfp/Call-for-Papers.htm
The page will be updated as soon as you send a CfP to the Secretariat.
Once a week we will send you the above mentioned link (, if a new CfP
has been added).
As a first kick off I put in the CfPs I received within the last two
weeks. If you want to have your CfPs in this register (and have them
announced within the community), please send the CfPs in electronic
format to the Secretariat.
May I ask you to check this page and send your comments?
Best regards
Eduard Dundler
