Dear friends,
Several of you have shown your interest in giving some tutorial either
in the Latin America Networking Conference or in the CLEI conference.
The first one will be held on September 7-11 in Santa Fe (Argentina) and
the second one on November 25-29 in Montenvideo (Uruguay).
Please confirm me your interest in one or both events and the topic of
your tutorial (a brief outline and its objectives) in order to contact
the organisers and to decide the selected ones.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Best regards
Ramon

Subject: [IFIP] New IFIP-UNESCO Curriculum published
To: IFIP GA and IFIP Member societies
TC 3 management
Dear All,
Yesterday, we received 2 complimentary copies of the recently published
"Elementary Curriculum for Teacher Training" and thought our GA reps and
Member societies would be interested to hear about this new IFIP-UNESCO
[Institute for Information Technologies in Education, Moscow] product.
The curriculum is produced by an IFIP working party. Members of the
Editorial working group are Anton Knierziger (AT), Sindre Rosvik (NO) and
Erling Schmidt (DK) with contributions from Mike Aston (UK), Boyka
Gradinarova (BG), Hajime Ohiwa (JP), Raul Wazlaweich (BR) and Honbo Zhang
(CN). The Drawings are by Nina Beier and were originally made for the
teaching material of the Pedagogical ICT Driving License in Denmark.
This is a state-of-the-art publication which provides important guidelines
for successful treks across the immense variety of options that ICTs
provide to teacher training. The main point the authors underscore is that
Pedagogy, not Technology, should be in the forefront when implementing ICTs
in Education.
IFIP's contribution was coordinated by the management of Technical
Committee 3 on Education. The publication is under UNESCO copyright - ISBN
5-902116-02-3. The contents and further details are available at
http://www.iite.ru/iite/publications/publications?id=38

NETWORKING 2002
The Second IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference
http://www.cnuce.pi.cnr.it/Networking2002

Networking is the biennial Conference on Networking of the IFIP
Technical Committee on Communication Systems (TC6). Networking 2002 is
the second conference of this series --the first event was held in
Paris, May 2000
Networking 2002 is organized into three tracks:
i) Networking Technologies, Services and Protocols
ii) Performance of Computer and Communication Networks
iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications Systems.
This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42
countries from all five continents: Africa (4), Asia (84), America
(63), Europe (158) and Oceania (5). From the 314 submissions, we
finally selected 82 full papers for the presentation in the conference
technical sessions. In addition, we selected 31 short papers for
presentation in the poster sessions.
The technical program also includes a panel session, and three Invited
Talks from worldwide leaders
Imrich Chlamtac "Managing Optical Networks in the Optical Domain"
Randy Katz "The Post-PC Era: It's All About Services"
Gerald Maguire "Personal Computing and Communication".
The panel session, organized by Andrew T. Campbell (Columbia
University), is entitled "Post 9-11 Networking Challenges". The panel
discusses on how to cope with the communications systems'
vulnerabilities revealed by the World Trade Center attack on September
11.
The program of the conference is on five days and includes
- two tutorial days, http://www.cnuce.pi.cnr.it/Networking2002/tutorial.html

Subject: [IFIP] H. Poirot Lottery - The Winner + April award
Dear All,
Ref. message http://www.ifip.or.at/mail/msg00120.html - Who is the Winner
of the Spring-is-in-the-air H. Poirot Lottery?
The scene: Early March 1994, two men in Brussels enter the NATO
Headquarters to meet with the NATO top brass for science and research so as
to investigate whether the "peace dividend" could be extended to support
participants in IFIP events. The previous day, the same two men had met
with representatives of the European Commission. That meeting with the
Commission of the European Communities resulted into a contract which made
it possible for 34 participants from Central and Eastern Europe to be
financially supported so as to attend the 14th IFIP World Computer
Congress' 94 in Germany. [Another significant contract followed in 1995 for
INTERACT].
The questions:
1. Who were the two men?
2. On the photo at http://www.ifip.or.at/image/open5.gif the two men appear
to be involved in a ceremony. What was the special occasion?
3. From which IFIP Member society were the meetings of the two men arranged
in Brussels?
4. Which city was the venue of IFIP Congress 94?
5. Which city will be the venue of IFIP Congress 2004?
Deadline for submissions was 29 March 2002; Condition to enter the draw -
to submit at least 3 of 5 correct answers
The CORRECT answers are:
1. Asbjorn Rolstadas and Plamen Nedkov
2. Opening Ceremony of the IFIP Headquarters and Secretariat in Laxenburg,
6 July 1995
3. Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
4. Hamburg
5. Toulouse
FIRST to respond (some minutes after we sent our mail) was Prof. Klaus
Brunnstein, IFIP Vice-President and German GA representative. He deserves
being singled out as he is a regular contender for "the fastest reply"
award. Unfortunately, he did not get the five correct answers to qualify
for the special prize but we greatly value the support Klaus gives to our
lotteries and we hope he will continue to be active.
THE WINNER of the H. Poirot lottery award is Prof. RITA DE CALUWE, Belgian
representative to IFIP who got 4 out of 5 correct answers. Congratulations,
Rita and we surely hope you will enjoy your special personal copy of the
Presidents' interviews.
A stumbling block for all was question number 4. Some thought it was GI
(Germany) while others believed it to be FAIB (Belgium). The CORRECT
answer is Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The meetings with NATO and the CEC
were held at the time of IFIP Council ' 94 in Brussels.
Greetings,
The Delivery Co.
P.S. And your April award... Need a Haircut?
A man and a little boy entered a barbershop together. After the man
received the full treatment - shave, manicure, haircut, etc. - he placed
the boy in the chair.
"I'm goin' to buy a green tie to wear for the parade," he said. "I'll be
back in a few minutes."
When the boy's haircut was done and the man still hadn't returned, the
barber said,

hand and said, 'Come on, son, we're gonna get a free haircut!'"
