Subject: [IFIP] IT & Sport + Lottery
Dear All,
We hope you had enough beer, boxer shorts and batteries for the weekend as
"King Football" entered the world stage on Friday and the Football World
Cup, as the most watched sports event, will keep football fans "glued" to
the TV screen throughout June. In 1998, 33.4 billion viewers watched the
World Cup in France [with 1 billion viewers for the final alone] and 41
billion viewers are expected to see the matches in South Korea and Japan.
Why this amazing interest in sport?
Carl von Clausewitz once said that War is a continuation of politics by
other means and this phrase continues to dominate political and strategic
parlance. Can Sport then be regarded as a "war with acceptable [peaceful]
means"? There is passion, struggle, and victories .. but there is
camaraderie and respect for opponents. Sport reflects practically all
aspects of human activity and achievement - work, leisure, BIG money...
[The fact that FIFA got the fantastic sum of US $ 828 million for this
year's World Cup TV rights speaks for itself!]
How does IFIP relate to Sport?
In 1991, several IFIP officials met in Barcelona for dinner with members of
the Organizing Committee of the '92 Olympics, we held our General Assembly
'95 at the Olympics stadium in Calgary, Council '98 was hosted to a
sightseeing tour and Dinner at Old Trafford, the Manchester United
home-base.... and the Slovak IFIP GA representative is a world champion in
team correspondence chess. We have some 80 WGs in 12 major areas of IT
research, development and applications but it appears "Sport" is not
identified as a special area of IFIP's interest.
Is it time for IFIP to find a niche in the sport domain? - We hope you
could help us find the answer by responding to the following:
--------------------------------
Questionnaire -- please respond by 14 June 2002
1. Should IFIP systematically engage in IT activities related to Sport?
[YES/NO]
2. If YES, would you recommend that the specific activity is carried out
within one of IFIP's 12 TCs or it is initiated as a Specialist Group
[following the example of TC 1 "Foundations of Computer Science" which
formerly was Specialist Group 14]
3. Please identify one or two items which you feel such a body should
address.
4. Is there any person currently involved in IFIP you think would be
interested, knowledgeable and available to champion such an activity.
5. Would you be personally interested if this activity is endorsed?
5.a - to provide leadership
5.b - to take part as a participant
Name:
IFIP function:
------------------------------:<-------------------:<
IF it turns that many think it is worthwhile IFIP to be involved in "IT &
Sport" we would forward the matter to IFIP's Technical Assembly.
And now, going back to the World Cup in Korea and Japan, here is a question
to all the football fans out there:
1. Which two teams will play the World Cup Final on 30 June and who will
win?
All correct answers submitted by 14 June will enter a draw and there will
be a special prize for the winner.
Good luck,
The Delivery Co.

Dear Eunice TPC members,
Until now, 12:15 CET May 31Friday, we have only received 3 submissions for
Eunice 2002. Could you please once again encourage your colleagues/students
to submit their work?
We may extend the deadline to next Friday June 7, if we don't get 'enough'

Best regards
Eunice 2002 organizing committee
Dear friends,
Many of you certainly remember Liane Tarouco. Recently I have received
the attached mail from her.
Is anybody of you interested in participating at the action she is
proposing? Does anybody of you know any group in your countries
interested in this action?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards
Ramon

Subject: [IFIP] Women & ICT
Dear All,
ITU tells us that women have expressed overwhelming support for the
importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICTs). A survey of
women from all regions of the world shows striking solidarity in the belief
that ICTs are critical to women for meeting their personal and professional
goals, in overcoming the inequality of the 'Digital Divide' and as
entrepreneurs The survey was released on World Telecommunication Day, which
commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union in
1865.
Women make up 42% (on average) of all the Internet users globally, ranging
from less than 30% in Morocco, India and Turkey to more than 50% in Canada
and the United States. 99% of women surveyed in 6 geographic regions have
expressed the view that access to information and communication
technologies are important to women entrepreneurs. When asked if ICTs
helped them meet their professional goals, 97% have agreed that they
did. The information gathered from this survey will provide input for the
World Summit on the Information Society.
Detailed information and the complete survey is available at
http://www.itu.int/newsroom/press_releases/2002/13b.html
Greetings,
The Delivery Co.

Dear friends,
At present I can say, like the French king Louis XIV, the WG6.9 c'est
moi. At present I am the only formal member.
It is necessary to understand that this WG is not specialised in a
precise topic like the others but is oriented to any kind of techniques
oriented to the developing countries.
I would like to have other people in this WG in order to be able to
cover as many developing areas as possible. So I ask all of you to
participate in it or to propose other people interested in proposing
solution for developing countries for participating in this WG.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Best regards
Ramon

Dear friends,
As you know, the Latin America Networking Conference has been cancelled
due to the redced number of paper submitted and to the critical
economical and social situation of this country. However, as we decided
in Saariselka, the tutorials (3 or 4) are maintained. Several of you
have shown your interest on giving some tutorial. As the situation has
changed I ask you to confirm your interest in giving a 6 hours tutorial
some day between September 9 and 13 in Santa Fe (Argentina). Thank you
in any case for your help.
Also, we decided in Saariselka to give some help (as in the previous
years) to the CLEI conference to be held in Montevideo (Uruguay) between
November 25 and 29. Some of you have expressed also your interest but
now it is the moment of confirming the interest. In any case thak you
for your help.
Best regards
Ramon

Dear TC6 members,
As you know from our last meeting we are in the process of nominating a new

chairperson for the next three year period. Before proceeding with her
nomination I would like to know whether you have any comments and in the
affirmative case please let me know them until May 31st. For your
information I attach the cv of Prof. Gaiti to this mail.
