Call for Papers
2004 IEEE CONSUMER COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE
“Consumer Networking: Closing the Digital Divide”
(Precedes the CES 2004 International Consumer Electronics
Show: www.cesweb.org), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA / 5-8 January, 2004
http://www.ccnc2004.org/
Sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society
The first IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference
(CCNC'2004) will be held on 5-8 January, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA,
just prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (www.cesweb.org).
The demand for networked consumer systems and devices is large and
growing rapidly. At home, in a car or truck, at work or at play,
Internet citizens want transparent internetworking for the systems and
devices that provide entertainment, information, and communications.
This internetworking should be on-demand, with whomever or
whatever they want, regardless of time or location. As a result,
consumer networking is gaining increasing attention from industry,
spawning a range of dramatically different solutions including wireless,
wireline, and power line networked communications environments, each
with their own strengths and special challenges to overcome. This in
turn has defined the scope of consumer networking to range from body and
personal area networking, to home networking and wide area networking.
In the not too distant future, we will see ad hoc networking augmented
with sensors sharing networked knowledge that enables devices and
systems to seamlessly interact with the Internet and wide area wireless
systems such as WiFi, 3G and future 4G networks. And this is just the
beginning!
This phenomenon, "Consumer Communications and Networking," has been
attracting many researchers in diverse areas from networking to consumer
electronics. This conference will present the latest approaches and
technical solutions in the area of consumer networking, enabling
technologies such as middleware and multimedia, and novel applications
and services. The conference will include a peer-reviewed program of
technical sessions, technology application panels, tutorials, and poster
sessions. CCNC 2004 provides a compelling forum for formal discussion
and socialization of many of these research challenges with seasoned
practitioners and colleagues from both industry and academia.

I too support Otto's view but Guy's comments and questions ought also to be
relayed to Roger Johnson.
I'm sure the publications committee are looking for alternative publishers
but if anyone has any ideas, they ought to pass them on to Roger.
Two questions:
Has anyone had any experience with "print on demand" book publishers?
Have our contacts with electronic publishing come up with anything useful?

Dear Prof. Brunnstein and IFIP GA Members,
Last week I was travelling and could not respond earlier to the message
Prof. Brunnstein wrote to GA on 20.5., in particular:
>Fourth: PN had NO duties regarding WITFOR. It was his task as UNESCO
>relations officer to acquire related funds but there was NO
>justification that he intervened (yes, he intervened!) into

As IFIP GA representative, Chairman of the WITFOR National Organizing
Commitee and member of the Steering Committee I would like to assure you
that Plamen Nedkov as IFIP Executive Director and WITFOR Commission
Co-Chair has very successfully contributed to the WITFOR program and
organization at all stages. He helped raise significant UNESCO funds for
the conference and to create useful connections. We have all relied on
his tactful advice and efficient contributions at all times.
I am personally very grateful to Plamen for his contributions both on
WITFOR matters and in my work as Lithuanian GA representative to IFIP.

Call for paper
Fourth International IFIP Working Conference
on
Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems
DAIS 2003
19-21 November 2003, Paris, France
to be held in conjunction with FMOODS'03
International Conference on Formal Methods for Open Object-based
Distributed Applications Systems
http://fedconf.enst.fr/
A call for tutorials common to FMOODS and DAIS and
a call for workshops will be issued separately.
The ubiquitous explosion of the Internet and the fast proliferation of
distributed computing involving all kinds of computing devices create a
unique challenge. Innovative solutions are required for the development,
implementation and operation of distributed applications in complex IT
environments full of diversity and heterogeneity. Following the
evolution of the field, DAIS'03 will focus on models, technologies and
platforms for reconfigurable, scalable and adaptable distributed
applications.
DAIS'03 will provide a forum for researchers, application and platform
service vendors and users, to review, discuss and learn about new
approaches, concepts and experiences in the fields of distributed
computing.
DAIS'03 will include talks by invited speakers, full technical paper
sessions, and work-in-progress presentations. Tutorial proposals are
also encouraged.
Conference themes:
In keeping with the focus on models, technologies and platforms for
reconfigurable, scalable and adaptable distributed applications, and in
addition to its traditional themes, DAIS especially encourages original
unpublished papers addressing the following topics:
- new/extended software architectures and frameworks for reconfiguration
and adaptation including component-based approaches (e.g. CORBA
Components, EJB, .NET),
- modelling, specifying, monitoring and management of context-aware and
adaptive applications,
- support for reconfiguration, self-organisation and autonomic behaviour
in new/existing distributed platforms (e.g. CORBA, J2EE, .NET,
WebServices),
- integration of multi-agent distributed decision-making,
- application environments that exploit characteristics of specific
technologies (e.g. grid computing, mobile and wireless),
- issues in enterprise-wide and large-scale application reconfiguration,
- semantic interoperability and semantic web services.
Submissions:
DAIS'2003 seeks submissions for:
- Full technical papers in no more than 12 pages (approximately 6000
words);
- Work-in-progress papers, describing on-going work and interim results,
in no more than 5 pages.
All papers must be original, unpublished, and not submitted
simultaneously for publication elsewhere. They will be refereed by the

Call for Papers
---------------
The Third Latin American Network Operations and Management Symposium -
LANOMS, to be held in Iguassu Falls (Foz do Iguaçu), Brazil, is the
result of the great success of both LANOMS'1999 which was held in Rio
de Janeiro and LANOMS'2001 which was held in Belo Horizonte, as well
as the other events in the area of network management known as NOMS
and APNOMS. NOMS (Network Operations and Management Symposium) was
originally created 13 years ago, and nowadays constitutes a worldwide
event for the researches in the area of network management. The
Asia/Pacific community promoted the APNOMS (Asia-Pacific Network
Operations and Management Symposium), which is an event more oriented
to the research and development community in that region. Continuing
the success of the second LANOMS, we will promote the third edition of
LANOMS (http://www.inf.ufpr.br/lanoms) on September 4-6 2003,
in Iguassu Falls, Paraná, Brazil.
The symposium is a promotion of the Federal University of Paraná
(UFPR), Brazil, technically co-sponsored by IEEE Communications
Society, and supported by IEEE Technical Committee on Network
Operations and Management (CNOM).
The main goal of the LANOMS is to create a forum more specific to the
necessities of Latin America in the area of network management
involving networking and telecommunication companies, academic
institutions and equipment vendors. LANOMS is an event open to
participants from all over the world who are interest in having, or
already have, research or commercial liaisons in Latin America - one
of the fastest growing regions in the world in networking. This year,
we intend to increase the submissions from North America, Europe,
Africa and Asia.

- Integrating Intrusion Detection and Network Management
- Intrusion Policy Management
- Web Services Security
- Business and Service Management
- Management Platforms, Interoperability, Standards and Protocols

July 1, 2003, the deadline for paper submission to IEEE INFOCOM 2004,
to be held in Hong Kong, March 7 - 11, 2004, is rapidly approaching.
The Call For Papers can be found at http://www.ieee-infocom.org/2004/.
We are well aware that there is concern about SARS among some potential
authors; however, all signs indicate that SARS is now under control. As you
may already know, the World Health Organization lifted its travel advisory
to Hong Kong and Guangdong, China last week. The number of new cases
in the rest of China is also decreasing rapidly.
While we continue to closely monitor the situation, be assured that we do
have contingency plans. We will see what happens the rest of this year and
will be prepared to reevaluate the situation in late November before the
Advance Program is published. For now, we would like to reassure you all
that IEEE INFOCOM 2004 will be held as planned. We encourage you to
submit your work before July 1, 2003, and be considered to present your
paper in a beautiful setting overlooking Hong Kong Harbor.

General Chair, IEEE INFOCOM 2004
