Please scrutinize this and provide me with you comments as soon as possible but not later than Monday 19 January. The idea behind the planned schedule is to attract an audience from the Western Cape constituency of the CSSA (Computer Society of South Africa) Chapter in the Western Cape. The programme therefore provides some overview/introduction to IFIP as an organization and its activities, but includes a number of presentations from persons from the WC CSSA Constituency. The latter to make it interesting for CSSA members to attend, and also to provide IFIP with an insight into activities in this region of South Africa. Registration information ------------------------ To register, visit: http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/ifm2004 Conference Theme ---------------- Applying formal methods may involve the modelling of different aspects of a system that are expressed through different paradigms. This motivates us to research the combination of different viewpoints upon a system, either by the creation of hybrid notations, by extending existing notations, by translating between notations, or by incorporating a wider perspective by innovative use of an existing notation. The integration of formal methods promises great benefits for systems modelling and software development. Whichever approach is taken, significant issues can arise in areas such as semantic integration, the tractability of notations, the integration of tool support, the integration of proof systems, consistency and completeness. Issues arise equally in our modelling of systems at different levels of abstraction and the development of these models through the process of refinement. The scope of IFM2004 includes all aspects of integration of different notations, paradigms, and tools, including integration of state-based and behavioural formalisms, and the formal strengthening of informal notations (e.g., UML). Special sessions are planned on the themes of Unifying Theories of Programming as well as Testing, and submissions for these are welcomed. The necessity of tool support for formal methods is widely accepted. However, much existing tool support fails to exploit the advantages that formality brings. This year's IFM is therefore particularly interested in how integrating formal methods can facilitate tool support for the development process, either by integrating tools or exploiting the particular languages combined. The conference also seeks and welcomes contributions in related areas such as: hybrid systems, the embedding of one formalism within another, and the integration of formal methods with informal or semi-formal diagrammatic notations and structuring techniques. Dear all, at the occasion of meeting 2003/1 in Muscat it was decided to have meeting 2004/1 in Athens (Greece) on Sat, May 15 + Sun, May 16 (see meeting minutes distgributed by Augusto). However, this would not be very convenient for those who want to participate to Networking 2004 (May 9-14 where the first days are devoted to tutorials). Thus let me suggest to have the meeting on Friday, May 14 (starting early afternoon) + Saturday, May 15 (full day). In that case delegates could either leave on Sunday or have some sightseeing and they could profit from cheaper plane tickets. By the way: There are now many low cost airlines all over Europe which offer no frills flights to Athens for phantastically cheap rates - if you book early! One way rates are less than USD 20, if you are lucky. Please tell me whether you agree with the new date proposal (May 14+15 for the meeting). A default message means that you agree. Based on your own experience as past TC chair, you are aware that this is a sometimes difficult but hopefully often rewarding office. I wish you all success in assuring that TC-6 continues to operate in the spirit which was so successfully developped and maintained by Augusto. Dear TC6 members, I attach the report concerning my chairmanship period from 1998 to 2003. The status of the Committee on the most relevant items is described there.
