Dear TC6 colleagues,
I've collected some information on Citeseer
regarding the impact of our TC6 events.
Please find these results below. It's always
useful to know how our events are ranked with
respect to others. This could be part of an
agenda item on statistics of TC6 events in Athens
and also in relation with publishers.
Note that these data have been computed in May
2003, which means that only events organized
until 2002 had a chance to have an impact. So,
recent events are not well ranked, which is
normal.
Note also that with citeseer only papers
available electronically are considered. So, a
first step in reaction to this would be that all
individuals publishing in our conferences put all
their papers on their web pages and send their
URLs to citeseer for reference. Unfortunately
this is not always allowed by the publishers, but
note that IEEE and ACM allow this. And I remember
that Kluwer had accepted too for events where
some authors would have otherwise refused to sign
the copyright transfer form.
A last comment in that only conferences
referenced in the DBLP database are taken into
account. And some TC6 conferences are not there.
Some reaction is needed. Perhaps each WG
chairperson could do the necessary steps to
register them as IFIP events: check
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/series/ifip/index.html
Best regards,
Guy

Estimated impact of publication venues in Computer Science
(higher is better) - May 2003 (CiteSeer)
Generated from documents in the CiteSeer </cs> database. This analysis
does not include citations where one or more authors of the citing and
cited articles match. This list is automatically generated and may
contain errors. Only venues with at least 25 articles are shown.
Impact is estimated using the average citation rate, where citations are
normalized using the average citation rate for all articles in a given
year, and transformed using ln (n+1) where n is the number of citations.
Publication details obtained from DBLP <http://dblp.uni-trier.de/> by
Michael Ley <http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/>. Only venues
contained in DBLP are included.

Dear all,
different countries have different characteristics (see attachment).
From some countries (e.g.Mexico) we don't yet have TC6 delegates.
Maybe we should be more active to seek for them.

Dear all,
you will remember from our previous meeting in Muscat or from the minutes
of that
meeting that we are seeking for a successor for Harmen van As as chairman
of WG 6.10 (Photonic networking). Harmen's successful chairmanship came
to an end
after six very successful years; thank you very much, Harmen, for that work.
As decided in Muscat, I asked four possible candidates whether they might
be interested.
Three of them refused by different reasons (see below).
Only Harry Perros is interested.
According to IFIP bylaws the chairman of a WG is nominated by the TC
chairman upon the recommendation of the Technical Committee.
We can do the ratification at our next meeting in Athens or - preferably -
earlier by electronic consensus.
I've asked the WG 6.10 members (there are not too many of them and the
email list
is already somewhat outdated) whether they might have comments or
objections but
I don't reallybelieve that I will receive too many of such comments (if any).
My questions:
- Should we approach even more candidates?
- Or alternatively: Would you support Harry Perros as new WG6.10 chairman?
Please give me a response until the end of March 2004.
A missing response means that you agree that Harry Perros should be the
successor
of Harmen von As. Nevertheless, I would prefer a positive statmeent
instead as of
a missing response.
Best regards
Otto

Otto

I copy the answers obtained by the candidates here:
Dear Professor Spaniol,
thank you for offering me the chance to compete for the position of WG 6.10
chairman. Unfortunately, after finishing my chairmanship of COST 266
management committee, my main activities in the field of telecommunications
have become more general that include the regulatory issues. Therefore, I am
unable to take up your kind offer.
Best regards,
Anton Kuchar
---------------------------------------------------------
Dear Dr. Spaniol,
Thank you very much for your email - I am honored by your offer to become
a chair person WG 6.10.
Unfortunately due to a number of appointments I have this year, I am
afraid I will not be able to
do a good service to the research community and IFIP, and dedicate
sufficient time to that role. I
hope however to be able to help in other ways - so, please do not
hesitate to come back to me. For
your convenience, I am attaching you my short resume -
I hope we'll keep in touch. Thanks again.
Kindest regards,
Admela Jukan

Dear Otto,
first I wish to express my gratitude and happyness for having been
mentioned as a possible Chairman of the WG 6.10 of IFIP to you and and
the other colleagues of the committee who put forward my name.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that Ericsson Lab Italy is not involved
anymore in the design of optical networks, I am in the difficulty of
accepting your kind invitation for opportunity reasons. I am really sorry
to decline this invitation, that I would like to accept in other
conditions of my company.
Anyway, I wish to contribute in some way to other IFIP committees that
match with my company current interests.
With kindest regards
Roberto Sabella
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hallo Otto
Guy Pujolle spoke to me about it, and as I told him I would be interested in
becoming the chairman of 6.10.
I am not a member of 6.10, because I was not asked to join in, despite
the fact that I have been working on optical networks full tilt since 1995.
I do not know who the members are of this group.
Also, I cannot attend your meeting in Athens, because I have to be back
home on May 15th for my son's University graduation.
Below please find a short biographical CV, and a vision statement.
Cheers
Harry
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
H. G. Perros is a Professor of Computer Science, an Alumni Distinguished
Graduate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Master of Science
degree in Computer Networks at NC State University. He received the B.Sc.
degree in Mathematics in 1970 from Athens University, Greece, the M.Sc.
degree
in Operational Research with Computing from Leeds University, England, in
1971, and the Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Trinity College
Dublin, Ireland, in 1975. He has held visiting faculty positions at
INRIA, Rocquencourt, France (1979), NORTEL, Research Triangle Park, North
Carolina (1988-89 and 1995-96) and University of Paris 6, France
(1995-96, 2000, and 2002). He has published extensively in the area of
performance modelling of computer and communication systems, and
he has organized several national and international conferences. In
1994, he published a monograph entitled "Queueing networks with blocking:
exact and approximate solutions", Oxford Press, and in 2001 a textbook
entitled "An introduction to ATM networks", Wiley. From 1995 to 2002 he
was the chairman of the IFIP Working Group 6.3 on the Performance of
Communication Systems, and currently he is a member of IFIP Working
Groups 7.3, 6.3 and 6.2. He is also an IEEE Senior Member. His current
research interests are in the areas of optical networks.
VISION
As I mentioned above I do not know who are the members of 6.10, and I
was not able to find out though the TC6 web site. I suspect, though,
that the membership is a small group of mostly European researchers. So, my
first action will be to enlarge it to about 30 to 40 members, and also
create a web site.
The main thrust of the group will be on optical networking and not on
the optical physical layer.
The main issue to resolve is the optical networking conference. There
is an annual conference sponsored by the 6.10, and also there is a new
conference on optical networks sponsored by TC 6 (the first one will
take place in Pisa this Fall). Obviously, these two have to be merged
into one conference. Then, in USA there is Opticomm, which is owned
by SPIE. We will need to come to an arrangement with Opticomm, so
that we do not compete for the same papers and attendees. If we
move fast, we may be able to dominate the conference scene, since
Opticomm is not yet a well-established conference

CALL FOR PAPERS
RAID 2004
"Intrusion Detection and Society"
Seventh International Symposium on
Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection
Institut Eurécom, Sophia-Antipolis, French Riviera, France
September 15-17, 2004
http://raid04.eurecom.fr
This symposium, the seventh in an annual series, brings together leading
researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to
discuss intrusion detection technologies and issues from the research
and commercial perspectives. The RAID International Symposium series is
intended to further advances in intrusion detection by promoting the
exchange of ideas in a broad range of topics.
For RAID 2004 there is a special theme: the interdependence between
intrusion detection and society. Thus, we will also welcome papers that
address issues that arise when studying intrusion detection, including
information gathering and monitoring, as a part of a larger, not
necessarily purely technical, perspective. For example, the implication
of information gathering and detection technologies on enterprises,
organisations and authorities, as well as legislative and governing
bodies is within scope, but also the impact and restrictions from those
bodies on the design and technology. This would include issues such as
privacy, risk and emergency management, crisis management, security
policies, standardisation and legal issues. An increasingly important
dynamic is the strategic importance of protecting national information
infrastructures, which is in some tension with the fact that much of
this infrastructure is in the private sector. Related to this is the
potential strategic impact of attacks at the intersection of information
and physical infrastructure.
The RAID 2004 program committee invites three types of submissions:
- Full papers presenting mature research results. Papers accepted
for presentation at the Symposium will be included in the RAID 2004
proceedings published by Springer Verlag in its Lecture Notes in
Computer Science (LNCS) series.
Full papers are limited to 20 pages when formatted according to the
instructions provided by Springer Verlag. Papers must include an
abstract and a list of keywords.
- Practical experience reports describing a valuable experience
or a case study, such as the design and deployment of a system or
actual experience from intrusion detection or network monitoring.
These reports are reviewed differently from full papers and do not
necessarily include fundamental scientific contributions or new
research ideas.
Practical experience reports are limited to 12 pages when formatted
according to the instructions provided by Springer Verlag.
They must include an abstract and a list of keywords.
- Panel proposals for presenting and discussing hot topics in the
field of intrusion detection systems.
The panel proposals should include both an outline of the format of
the panel and a short rationale for the panel. Panels that include
time for general discussion and questions/answers between the
panelists and the Symposium attendees are preferred.
All topics related to Intrusion Detection Systems and Technologies
are within scope, including their design, use and maintenance,
integration, correlation and self-protection, just to mention a few.
With reference to this year's theme and extended scope we also invite
papers on the following topics, as they bear on intrusion detection and
the general problem of information security:
Risk assessment and risk management
Intrusion tolerance
Deception systems and honeypots
Privacy aspects
Data mining techniques
Visualization techniques
Cognitive approaches
Biological approaches
Self-learning
Case studies
Legal issues
Critical infrastucture protection (CIP)

containing the title and abstract of your paper, the authors' names, email
and postal addresses, phone and fax numbers, and identification of the
contact author. To the same message, attach your submission (as a MIME
attachment) in PDF or portable postscript format. Do NOT send files
formatted for word processing packages (e.g., Microsoft Word or WordPerfect
files). Submissions not meeting these guidelines risk rejection without
consideration of their merits.
