The weather has improved again. There was snow in the morning (!), but now the sun shines, not for long I assume.
The next days will be mixed but unfortunately not warm (below 10 degrees and some rain ...).
Best regards

Dear Participants of the Euromech Colloquium 600,
we are looking forward to seeing you in Aachen!
In this e-mail we would like to provide some further information about the special format of the colloquium.
As you may have noticed, every contribution is planned to have a duration of 30 minutes. However, please be aware that
QUESTIONS ARE ALLOWED AT ANY TIME.
This means that you do not have to prepare so many slides. Certainly you can have backup slides. But important is the following:
THE SLOT ENDS AFTER 30 MINUTES, independently of the fact, whether you have shown all slides.
· It is completely in your hands, how you steer the discussion. For instance you could focus on a theoretical formulation. Then it would be good to present that in such a way that the auditorium can follow and ask THE questions you might want to have. You can also put questions directly on the slides. Or you focus on a specific application. Then you might plan to go through the theory quickly and show more details about the application.
· But certainly ... questions can come about every part of your presentation, maybe just about the parts which are not described in detail ... Also questions about notation are absolutely normal and welcome to clarify the probably upcoming 20 different notations ... ;).
· There will be the possibility to write something on the board.
· The outcome and value of the discussion depends on us altogether. It will be the task of the chairpersons to steer the group a little. For example, It should not happen that a discussion between only two participants eats up 15 minutes or so. In the opposite case that there are not enough questions, the chairperson should trigger some discussion ...
In order to help us all to be better prepared for the discussion, we ask every speaker to
PROVIDE MAX. 5 SLIDES IN ADVANCE (pdf format).
The DEADLINE for that is March 7, because we need some time to construct a pdf file and to send it around. This file will contain the abstract and the slides for every contribution.
We are very much looking forward to the discussion and to learn new things ...
Best regards!
Stefanie and the EUR600 organization team

Dear Euromech600 Participants,
please find now enclosed the program for the colloquium. If anything does not work for you, please tell us. There is still flexibility w.r.t. changes of talks or chairs. Please send us an e-mail, if you have questions.
From our side, we would be glad to hear about any wishes for the excursion. There are mainly two options:
- city tour, this includes cathedral, town hall, other nice places, Aachen is small, therefore easily feasible by walking, recommendable for people who have never been in Aachen
- country triangle tour (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany), “three-country-beer” which means one beer in each country (in this order), easily feasible by bus or car (about 25 min from spot to spot)
Best regards,
Stefanie, Peter and the organization team

=============================
Dear EuroMech 600 participant,
thank you very much for your abstract. We are looking forward to hear about your recent findings at our colloquium. Please read this email thoroughly to receive all important informations.
The list of participants and abstracts is published on the website. It will be constantly updated. The time schedule will come at the end of this week.
http://600.euromech.org/program/scientific-program/
Since the talks will be discussion based, we would like to remind you of the structure of the presentations. Questions can be posed by everybody at any time. Everybody has 30 minutes time for presentation and discussion. The idea is that the discussion takes about 50% of the time. The goal is to learn and understand new things. Therefore we cannot recommend to you to prepare for instance 20 slides. This would be simply too much ...
One important point: To remain in the time schedule, every presentation plus discussion must end on time. This means that you might not have presented all your slides at the end. We hope that you can live with that ... ;). You might find some interested people who further listen to you in the lunch break ;).
Due to the specific format, the chairpersons have much more responsibility than usual. Their task is to initiate and to steer the discussion, also with respect to the thirty minutes time frame. We hope that all professors would be ready to serve as chair ;). We will announce that at the end of the week.
Additionally, in order to give the audience a chance to be well-prepared for the discussions, participants are gently asked to send us (please use euromech600(a)ifam.rwth-aachen.de) 3-5 slides in a PDF format until Wednesday, March 6. The slides will be made available to all participants. If somebody does not want to send the slides, no problem. Then the audience is less prepared ;).
For those who are interested to explore Aachen and surroundings, we will organize an excursion (no additional cost) on Thursday, March 14 afternoon. Please notify us if you are willing to attend, so that we can plan in advance. Please give us also a hint what you want to see. If there is a clear majority, we can certainly plan accordingly.
Finally, if you have not booked a hotel room yet, you might consider the following ones:
Aquis Grana ****, 100 EUR (very close to cathedral, 15 min walk to lecture room)
Baccara **, 84 EUR (very simple but close, 8 min walk to lecture room)
IBIS Aachen Marschiertor **, 79 EUR (simple, 30 min walk to lecture room)
Innside Aachen ****, 135 EUR (very modern, 15 min walk to lecture room)
There are many more hotels, and Aachen is not a huge city (250000 inhabitants). So, most hotels are in walking distance to the venue. If this turns out to be difficult, please ask us.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Aachen soon.
Best regards,
Stefanie Reese, Peter Hansbo and the organization team
