What’s St. Martin’s Day? Craft the Night Away!
Did you notice groups of children walking through the streets with small lanterns? This is part of the Saint Martin’s Day celebration, rooted in the legend of St. Martin sharing his cloak with a freezing beggar. Another story has him hiding among geese to avoid becoming a bishop, only to be revealed by their honking—possibly inspiring the tradition of the Martinsgans feast.
Saint Martin’s Day is celebrated in Germany with lively customs like lantern processions (Martinszüge) ending at a bonfire. In western Germany, children receive "Weckmänner" (sweet bread figures), and traditional Martinssingen songs fill the air. The Martinsgans meal with red cabbage and dumplings is also popular, a nod to past Advent fasting traditions.
On November 14th, you can join the AStA for a belated celebration at Craft the Night Away! Create your own lantern to honor this tradition. During the guided session, you’ll design and decorate your lantern step by step with autumn-inspired patterns—materials provided! Bring your ideas, and let your creativity shine. Supplies are limited, so arrive early to secure your spot!
