I need to know how to set my list so that no one but those I choose can send messages to my list. I want people to be able to subscribe or unsubscribe themselves, but not be able to post to all list members themselves. I use this particular list as a mailing list for information to my subscribers. Pleas make it simple instructions as I am just starting to use Smartlist. I don't know what files to change or where to make the changes. The way it is now is that anyone on the accept list can send to the list members. When they subscribe it adds to the accept file and the dist file. I need for it to add only to the dist file if that's the one that holds the mailing list in it. Not a "dummy," but seriously tool-challenged, anyway. For the information of others on the SmartList list, I have been attempting to help him off-list, and discovered Jim is another person without shell access to his account, using instead a web-based "control panel" to handle SmartList and his files. Which, of course, means he can't use delink, and will probably need to set his list moderated and jump through another couple of hoops to get anywhere near to where he wants to be. But since we don't use this "control panel," and (at least I) haven't even seen it, we won't be able to help much at all. I would urge him to contact his provider for support, if he can't use the tools that come with SmartList. Like I said before, we can't target the users, but these providers should be providing their own support for things like this if they are not allowing their users access to the standard tools. Oh, and to Jim directly: repeting your question over and over again on the mailing list isn't going to win you friends, nor will it get you your answer any faster. Please be patient...some of us are trying to help. It is your provider who has limited you, not us. Charlie
Some things that should be noted by those with a control panel: Usually, there is some kind of SSH availability - check with the provided. The panels I've seen require you to use something like Secure CRT, generate the key, cut and paste the key into their web SSH interface AND provide the IP you are connected from (send yourself an email and check the header for your IP if you don't have a static IP) Your IP will most likely change each time you connect. Anyhow, this will allow you to get to the directory on the host server where your domain resides and usually they install Smart List there. You can send command line strings from there. Charlie helped me a lot with that. Additionally, although it's slower, if you aren't familiar with pico or the other Linux editors, rc.custom, rc.local..... can be edited from your file manager selection in the web control panel. Keep clicking on the domain, domain_mail, listname, etc until the files are shown. You can usually edit them from there and save them. Hope this helps Liz

Hello, I am new to this list and new to Smartlist. I use a web-based control panel. It has a file manager where I can see my directory structure and can create, edit, save, etc. any files that are in there. I had no trouble editing the rc custom file, once I figured out what changes I needed to make. I have other changes I want to make and would appreciate whatever help I can get here. My first question is about getting the manual. My web hosting company has basic instructions for setting up smartlist and then a link to an ftp site to download the manual. But I get an error when I try to download it. Is there another place where I can find the manual? Can I read it on-line somewhere? I've found some FAQs that helped a lot, but I'd like to take a look at the manual before I start asking for help. Thanks, Cindy Eliason

Yes. In the Smartlist source at www.procmail.org. The easiest approach should be to contact your provider and tell them to place a link to the SmartList manual into your list directory, because the manual is included in each source package. Could you please tell us what company is providing this list service and what ftp link they have for the manual? I really want to know the people for whom I am providing support free of charge. Jim, If you cannot acces delink, you can just use ftp or filemanager from your controlpanel. In the case of hardlinked "accept" and "dist files" and you want to edit accept and keep dist as it is: 1) Delete accept 2) Create a new file accept in filemanager (or upload it using ASCII mode!) 3) make sure the access mode is like dist (_rw-r--r--). You can change this in filemanager or using some ftp tool. The files are now delinked and you have to edit them separately. You beter don't do this when a list is busy (there is some locking trick, see the faq if you have it).
