Thanks for the thoughts on my original post (copy below), but I probably wasn't clear. Although my host (who is extremely helpful) pre-loaded SL, I do have access to the files to make any changes. Admittedly, host-guy does not know everything about the program which is why I am seeking help here. Also, I did read the FAQ's but understanding is not coming as easy as I had hoped. My main questions are: 1. Should my list be newsletter, subscriber-only, or moderated? 2. If it's moderated, do the names still automatically subscribe/unsubscribe or does it require some action on my part? 3. How do I turn off the subscribe requests to my e-mail box? I thought I had figured it out in the rc.custom file, but only screwed it up. Has anyone else experienced the proliferation of a virus through a newsletter list that did not originate on the computer that sent the initial message? I'm terrified of sending another mailing until I figure this out. Thanks again for the help. ----------------------- I am using SmartList provided by my hosting service. I want to allow people to subscribe/unsubscribe, but I want to be the only one to be able to send mail to the lits. I am in no way programming oriented though and am having problems. When I first set up the list, it was set (through a web interface) as "newsletter." My first mailing went out the day Nimda hit and several thousand people on the list got a virus via my mail (the virus didn't originate with me), which kept sending and re-sending to everyone. It was a nightmare. I then set the list to "moderated," but now it doesn't appear that all names are recording to the list, and I know that unsubscribes are not working. Plus, I get hundreds of subscribe e-mails in my mailbox each day that I don't want to see. I've read the documentation, but I'm still confused. Finally, I need to keep editing the dist file to add lists that other departments send me -- what does everyone use to do this? Can anyone, please, oh please, help me out? Janice

Bearing in mind that the accept file may well be linked to the dist file, so before you edit it make sure you de-link it (.bin/delink if you have shell access). Roger
