I am using SmartList provided by my hosting service. I want to allow people to subscribe/unsubscribe, but I want to be the only one to be able to send mail to the lits. I am in no way programming oriented though and am having problems. When I first set up the list, it was set (through a web interface) as "newsletter." My first mailing went out the day Nimda hit and several thousand people on the list got a virus via my mail (the virus didn't originate with me), which kept sending and re-sending to everyone. It was a nightmare. I then set the list to "moderated," but now it doesn't appear that all names are recording to the list, and I know that unsubscribes are not working. Plus, I get hundreds of subscribe e-mails in my mailbox each day that I don't want to see. I've read the documentation, but I'm still confused. Finally, I need to keep editing the dist file to add lists that other departments send me -- what does everyone use to do this? Can anyone, please, oh please, help me out? Janice
Janice -- The short answer is that you need to contact your hosting service for help. The web interface you mention is NOT part of SmartList, and we can't help you there. In fact, listers here sometimes tend to resent hosting services that use a package like SmartList, which is already essentially free to them, and then try to foist off their support costs on others... This is not a reflection on you, necessarily. However.... You didn't mention that you had done any reading. Before you go any further, be sure you read and understand the SmartList FAQ *and* the SmartList Manual. Both of these are available at http://www.hartzler.net/smartlist/ After you grok these writings, then you will probably want to find out how to directly edit/manipulate the configuration files for your lists.
